1 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

6 Bruce, Jean. THE LAST BEST WEST.
Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside 1976 0889024014 / 9780889024014 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Author
177 pp, 9 1/4" H. Signed by author on title page, under printed name. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "Between 1896 and 1914, the Canadian government carried out a vigorous programme in central Europe, Britain, and the United States to persuade people to immigrate to the Canadian west, 'The Last Best West'. Hundreds of thousands of prospective settlers from diverse and distinctive ethnic backgrounds responded, leading to an extraordinary mass migration which changed the face of Canada. This great campaign to populate the west is presented here by Jean Bruce, in a compelling and moving selection of more than 190 photographs of the period, together with short related texts. Her superb pictorial history gives a fine sense of scope and perspective to this vital period in the growth of Canada. We see all the paraphernalia of the government advertising campaign, the journey from the setllers' homelands, the first prairie homesteads, the development of western cities and industries and, above all, the people whose lives transformed - and were transformed by - the Canadian west." 7 Byng, John, Viscount Torrington. Edited by Donald Adamson. RIDES ROUND BRITAIN.
London Folio Society 1996 Hard Cover Very Good Anne Hayward.
505 pp, 8vo (8" H). Bound in quarter orange-brown buckram, Ann Muir marbled paper boards; dark brown endpapers. Plain dark brown slipcase. Frontispiece and 25 half-page and smaller b&w engravings by Anne Hayward, 9 maps by Denys Baker. A countryman at heart, Byng travelled throughout Britain on horseback whenever his position at the Stamp Office would allow him to escape from London. As a chronicler of the eighteenth-century, "Byng travels with an observant though never a roving eye. At times it is the eye of the modern photo-journalist, as when he records a meeting with Humphrey Repton, visits Sarah Siddons in her dressing-room at Birmingham, or glimpses Warren Hastings changing horses on his way to Daylesford. At other times his eye is more like that of the self-taught but well-trained artist, as when he admires the flickering tapers of Yordas Cave or the Kentish hop-pickers working in all haste among the twinkling lights of the hopfields. At Cromford in Derbyshire the bustle and brilliance of Arkwright's great cotton 'manufactory' even blind him to what he basically regards as the horrors of creeping industrialism: 'The cotton mills,' he observes, 'seven storeys high and fill'd with inhabitants, remind me of a first-rate man of war and, when they are lighted up on a dark night, look most luminously beautiful.' As is now widely acknowledged, (Byng) is one of the greatest British travellers of the eighteenth or indeed of any century. Not only has he produced an excellent travel guide (as, in a way, he intended to do); his work is also a major contribution to the social history of England and Wales - and especially Welsh social history. (This book) is, finally, a masterpiece of social observation, written with as fine an eye for detail as Jane Austen's and (like Pepys diary) superb in its delineation of its author's own character." Some light rubbing to paper on boards. Slipcase has minor rubbing and one very small edge bump.

Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1975, first edition.
257 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0710079133 B&w illustrations. "....(a) fascinating full-length history of one of the world's most interesting and ancient musical instruments. The story begins in 3000 B.C. with the mouth-blown reed pipes, predecessor to the bagpipe. Mr Collinson looks at the history of this instrument as known in ancient Babylonia and Egypt, through the ancient Grecian Empire and Greece itself, to Rome and thence to Britain. He investigates the application of the bag principle to the mouth-blown pipes in Hellenic Egypt and Rome, and the first appearance of the bagpipe in Great Britain and Ireland in the eleventh or twelfth century. He describes the development of the bagpipe in the Br itish Isles, its rise and gradual waning, leaving the Scottish Highland bagpipe and the Northumbrian pipes as the sole survivors. Having traced its evolution, the book goes on to narrate the fortunes of the 'Great Highland Bagpipe' itself. T h i s i s an account which encompasses the Jacobite risings and Culloden, and the Disarming Act 1747, by which the use of the bagpipe was more or less proscribed. It covers the great music of Pibroch, in the hands of the MacCrimmons and other p ip er s, a n d co ntinues up to modern times. Appendices list the bagpipes of other countries and the materials used in the instrument's manufacture, and there is a comprehensive bibliography." Windrow & Greene, (London, 1996).
64 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "Unlike the household troops of many heads of state, The Guards have combined their role as the personal bodyguard of the Sovereign with an unsurpassed fighting tradition. This tradition is the cement that binds them together within The Household Division, whose motto is Septem Juncta in Uno - Seven Joined in One. Although The Household Division is an adminstrative rather than a fighting formation and although The Guards are most visible today for their central part in London's spectacular occasions of military and State pageantry, the Regiments are first and foremost professional soldiers, ready to exchange their ceremonial uniforms for comb at fatigues at short notice - as they proved most recently in the Falklands and Gulf Wars. Both aspects of their unique character are fully covered in the more than 120 superb colour photos specially taken for this book by a respected military photographer and author." 20 Hannigan, Des. ECCENTRIC BRITAIN: A GUIDE TO BRITAIN'S BIZARRE BUILDINGS, PECULIAR PLACES AND OFFBEAT EVENTS.
London New Holland 2004 1843307316 / 9781843307310 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Chris Coe, photography.
160 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with colour photographs, maps. "The British have always held the franchise on eccentricity. Throughout this fascinating offshore and off-centre island - from Cornwall's spectacular Land's End to Scotland's lonely northern outpost of John o' Groats - the dramatic and magnificent story of Britain has always been punctuated by the quirky, the irreverent and the downright dotty. (This book) explores every quirky corner of the nation from the outrageous expose of Dorset's Cerne Abbas giant, outlined in chalk on a green hillside in all its rude glory, to chasing cheeses down helter-skelter hillsides in Cambridgeshire. Farther north things may get colder, but they're still crazy with it. There's the highest pub in England at Yorkshire's Tan Hill and a Lake District lighthouse that is miles from the sea. Wales and Scotland are not far behind either when it comes to mad-hattery. Where else would you find people eager to submerge themselves for fun in a freezing Welsh bog? And how about Scotland, with a pineapple-shaped house and the world's best worst poet? Organized by area with maps that show the location of every bizarre building, peculiar place and offbeat event and illustrated throughout with superb specially commissioned photography, this book will entertain, enlighten and more than often raise the odd eyebrow." Light edge wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners, small bump on fore-edge of both boards. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, and on flap-folds.
