4 Baybutt, Ron. CAMERA IN COLDITZ.
Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1982, first edition.
128 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0340248238 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Colditz Castle is the Eiger North Wall of World War Two POW camps. It was the ultimate fortress for the bravest and the best, f or the most ingenious, most determined and daredevil spirits who had already effected an exit from lesser establishments of the Third Reich. From Colditz, it was boasted, there could be no escape. The stories of those Allied officers who t o o k u p t he challenge are now well known. But here for the first time a book gathers together a collection of the authentic official German photographs, actually taken on the spot within hours of various foiled escape attempts being discove r ed . S om e ti me s t hey are pictures of the stable door after the horse has fled successfully over the distant border. They were taken between the years 1941 and 1944 by Johannes Lange, a local Colditz town photographer of weddings and christ en ing s, de put ed by th e Thi rd Reich to record what the war's most persistent escapologists were up to....Lange's persistent camera also recorded escape equipment ingeniously devised by the backroom boys, from a compass in a walnut shell to a gl ider wh ich was mer cifu lly sa ved from the ultimate test of the launch pad by the end of the war. The stories are desperate and amazing, funny and tragic by turns, but always exciting. (This book) is also a tribute to the ingenuity and invi ncib ility of the huma n sp irit. " S oft cre ase at top corner of first three leaves, small area of discoloration at top edge of title page and the preceding page, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, very light wrin kling at t op o f spi ne an d flap -fold s, v ery l ight rubbing. Very Good/Very Good

London John Murray 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
208 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Decorations, furniture, pictures, china, linen, the kitchen, food, drink, entertaining, washing, sanitation, heating, lighting, servants, illness, remedies, handicrafts, money, taxation and household superstitions and customs - all, so to speak, bring grist to the author's mill and the result is a graphic and convincing presentment of life in the period. The 'good old days' may have been enjoyable for those with plenty of money and good health, for the sick and poor much of life must have been horrible, the squalor behind the grandeur, the dirt underneath the cloth of gold - but how gracious and artistic the great houses were." Light stain on page leaf 111/112, five faint line marks on fore-edge of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light browning on spine and flap-folds, light edge wear, several small and tiny edge chips, several cup ring stains/impressions on front panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

8 Bruce, Jean. THE LAST BEST WEST.
Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside 1976 0889024014 / 9780889024014 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Author
177 pp, 9 1/4" H. Signed by author on title page, under printed name. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "Between 1896 and 1914, the Canadian government carried out a vigorous programme in central Europe, Britain, and the United States to persuade people to immigrate to the Canadian west, 'The Last Best West'. Hundreds of thousands of prospective settlers from diverse and distinctive ethnic backgrounds responded, leading to an extraordinary mass migration which changed the face of Canada. This great campaign to populate the west is presented here by Jean Bruce, in a compelling and moving selection of more than 190 photographs of the period, together with short related texts. Her superb pictorial history gives a fine sense of scope and perspective to this vital period in the growth of Canada. We see all the paraphernalia of the government advertising campaign, the journey from the setllers' homelands, the first prairie homesteads, the development of western cities and industries and, above all, the people whose lives transformed - and were transformed by - the Canadian west." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine.

The first six volumes in the "Castle" series, plus volume eight - 7 books in total, 6 7/8" H. **Please note: volume 7 - Castle Spellbound - is not included in this grouping.** 1. Castle Perilous - 249 pp, 1988, ISBN 044109418X. "Yesterday he was an unemployed philosophy major. Today he lives in a castle - that's worlds away from home. His best buddy looks like seven feet of walking shag carpet, and the girl in his life's from California. In Castle Perilous, everyone has some magical talent, and behind each of the 144,000 doors there's a new world to explore. There's only one hitch. There's a reason why it's called Castle Perilous." 2. Castle for Rent - 195 pp, 1989, ISBN 0441094066. "The king of Castle Perilous is time-trapped in that weird realm known as New York City. The other castle dwellers are lost and scattered throughout thousands of equally bizarre, equally barbaric, universes. And what's worse, their vacancy is being filled by nasty blue demons. Will anyone make it back in time to thwart the invasion? Or will Castle Perilous become a Castle for Rent?" 3. Castle Kidnapped - 216 pp, 1989, ISBN 0441094082. "The magic of Castle Perilous has gone awry, dumping its guests into wildly unlikely worlds. Computer whiz Jeremy, who never comes closer to exercise than absolutely necessary, is trapped on the planet of golf-crazed dinosaurs. Our hapless hero Gene finds himself on the planet of Amazon women, claimed as the love slave of their buxom queen. Unless Lord Incarnadine can pull the plug on his malfunctioning Castle, he's going to be facing the empty walls of Castle Kidnapped." 4. Castle War! - 233 pp, 1990, ISBN 0441092705. "Last year's little conflict with the Hosts of Hell has left the Castle Perilous a bit out of whack. Before Jeremy can write a program to stabilize the cosmos, an evil mirror version of the Castle appears - complete with a hostile army of alter egos drawn from its own 144,000 inverted worlds. A love-starved computer and animated chain saw don't help matters much. It's war." 5. Castle Murders - 243 pp, 1991, ISBN 044109273X. "How do you catch a killer in a castle with 144,000 back doors? The scene of the crime: a party at Castle Perilous. The victim: a nobleman who is certainly not the life of the party. The body is soon identified as the magic-dabbling viscount named Oren - but a corpse by any other name still smells of foul play! At any rate, mystery loves company, and everyone at Castle P. is scrambling for clues, alibis, and the murder weapon itself. Which is bound to show up - in the next victim!". 6. Castle Dreams - 228 pp, 1992, ISBN 0441094147. "Lord Incarnadine, King of the Realms Perilous, is dead as any one of the doornails in his wacky Castle P.'s thresholds to adventure. A would-be-royal rapscallion has all the Castle inmates spell-befuddled and battling for control of the throne. Meanwhile, Gene finds himself riding shotgun for a suntanned Amazon on the faster-than-light frontier - and Lord Inky discovers that there's risky business to be had everywhere - even in the shadowy world beyond the tomb!" 8. Bride of the Castle - 181 pp, 1994, ISBN 0441001203. "When Gene and Linda decide to get married, Castle Perilous lives up to its name! Seems the happy groom would rather face a horde of barbarians than his wedding guests - and that's a wish he's granted when he crosses a certain sinister portal. Now Gene is fighting the battle of his life - but he'll soon learn that that's nothing compared to the fury of a bride scorned. It's going to be one insane wedding day!" Michael Joseph, London, 1957, first edition.
188 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. In this latest installment in the 'Doctor' series, "Gordon soon discovers that a busy practitioner needs a wife as much as a stethoscope. As his other friend, Tony Benskin, observes, 'The patients don 't like you messing about with their wives unless they know you've got one of your own at home'. And of course there has to be someone to answer the telephone, open the door, keep the N.H.S. records, cook the dinner, do the laundry - and pro t e c t h i m from some of his female patients. Dr Gordon's only worry is that the right girl will turn up. She does, but only after an unfortunate love affair which should illustrate to patients the dangers of failling for the same nurse as thei r do ct or . He proposes, is accepted, and soon comes to the conclusion that a couple who can survive the preparations for their wedding can overcome pretty well everything in their married life to come. Despite relatives and real estate, solicit or s a nd sal es m en, bridesmaids and builders, and the doubtful though undoubted assistance of his friends, Dr Gordon finally marries the girl - but only just."
