"The Battle of the Hook was probably the last full-scale infantry battle, fought on traditional lines, that the world will ever see. It was also a classic set-piece example of a battalion in defence and was, in terms of steel, the biggest battle of the Korean War, and the most concentrated confrontation of artillery support and engineering effort since the First World War. In it the Black Watch and t he Duke of Wellington's Regiment defeated and completely routed a fanatical Chinese army who attacked them over a period of some fifteen days with incredible ferocity. The Chinese losses were so great that they never attempted such assaul t s a g a i n . It was a turning point of the Korean War and a triumph of British arms...." 4 Borawski, John. SECURITY FOR A NEW EUROPE: THE VIENNA NEGOTIATIONS ON CONFIDENCE- AND SECURITY-BUILDING MEASURES 1989-90, AND BEYOND.
London Brassey's (UK) 1992 1857530403 / 9781857530407 First English Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
235 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "While the 'traditional' threat of East-West military confrontation appears much reduced, events in Yugoslavia have removed any complacency about the stability of the new Europe unfolding around us. New threats - territorial quarrels, nationalism, and the demise of the Soviet Union as a unitary state - require a radically new approach to European security. The creation of an effective security system will be highly dependent on the trust and co-operation between the former Warsaw Treaty Organisation countries and their new-found NATO allies. As their title suggests, the Vienna Negotiations on Confidence- and Security-Building Measures aimed to do exactly this, by fostering greater openness about military organisation and activity. John Borawski's history of the negotiations provides a detailed analysis of the issues involved, indicating the likely direction of future talks following the watershed March-July 1992 CSCE follow-up meeting in Helsinki, and highlighting their extreme relevance to the problems confronting European policy-makers today. As they continue to seek an alternative to the limited, hardware-based negotiations of the past, 'Security for a New Europe' grows in importance as a source of ideas for problems old and new." Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

10 Grey, Ian. PETER THE GREAT: EMPEROR OF ALL RUSSIA.
Philadelphia J.B. Lippincott 1960 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good Good-
505 pp, 8 1/2" H. "The first modern Russian was Peter the Great. In this enthralling biography of that remarkable, revolutionary ruler, Ian Grey paints a superbly illuminating portrait - clean, clear, objective, without malice or sentimentality. Here we have, life-size, not only the great Tsar, but the man who fell in love with a peasant girl and made her his empress; the father who was betrayed by his son; the roisterer who was a creative genius; the physical giant who carried all his life the scars of a childhood terror; the soldier, sailor, laborer, daring innovator, architect of a nation. Tossing aside all the pomp and holiness that traditionally surrounded a tsar, Peter ripped apart the fabric of Russian life and, almost singlehandedly, made his country into a modern Western power." Each two-page spread describes and maps a particular phase in the conflict, linking its position in the order of events to previous and subsequent topics. Graphic keys supply at-a-glance locations in time and place, while a cursor bar shows the phase of the overall conflict. HISTORY OF THE GERMAN AIR FORCE., Philpott, Bryan.
15 Philpott, Bryan. HISTORY OF THE GERMAN AIR FORCE.
London Bison 1986 0861242750 / 9780861242757 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
192 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, colour cutaways. "German military aviation got off to a somewhat slow start in the years before World War I but innovative aircraft designs and brilliant pilots soon established a deadly reputation in the skies over the Western Front. The Germans were pioneers too in long-distance bombing by the naval air service's Zeppelins and the later Gotha aircraft. Despite the restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I innovation continued, to be accelerated when Hitler came to power and the new Luftwaffe had its baptism of fire in Spain. The Luftwaffe went on to play a vital part in the Blitzkrieg campaigns of the early war years and came close to defeating Britain in 1940. The later war years were dominated in turn by the efforts to hold back the American bombers by day and the British by night. In the process the best German pilots became the most effective in the world, the leading German ace, Hartmann, scoring some 352 victories, while in the technical field Germany pioneered the use of jet aircraft. The present day East German air force is by far the best equipped in the Warsaw Pact outside the Soviet Union, fielding such types as the MiG-23 and MiG-27. The new West German Luftwaffe has undergone some problems with its aircraft but with the introduction of the Tornado it now has the equipment to match its undoubted operational efficiency. (This book) features Bryan Philpott's carefully researched text as well as photographs and artworks depicting the great and famous aircraft, the men who fought in them and their role in the great conflicts of (the 20th) century. This unique contribution to the history of military aviation is sure to appeal to any aricraft enthusiast." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small tear with wear (archivally taped) at top of rear hinge, tiny scuff on front flap fold, soft wrinkling at top of front panel, light rubbing.

Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1965, first edition.
513 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers, colour and b&w photographs, maps, decorations. "....not just a travel book, nor is it just Russia, or Russia Now. It is a revelation of the Communist Way, the Other Way in this divided world. It is a journey in understanding via not only Leningrad and Moscow, Kiev and such cities of Soviet Asia as Sukhara, Alma-Ata, and - Samarkand, but via the extraordinary essential history, via the Men from Hell - the Tartars, via the Czars of All the Russias (terrible Ivan, giant Peter, Catherine, the idiots), via Karl Marx, Rasputin, the Revolutions, Lenin (the real Lenin), Stalin (his evil documented). It answers Why/How/What is Communism? and What is Russia Really Li ke? The answers are clear, perceptive, disturbing, and without commitment except to the truth about this astonishing society where atheists keep Communist Commandments that point the problem of the Two Moralities, Purtians frown at stretch - p a n t s , h otels are barless, and rich writers carless. The Party Plan for rentless flats and fareless trains gives food for thought. And you are richly entertained when the author takes you to the Kremlin, to people at home, to the ballet a t th e Bo ls ho i, in to Red Square for the feting of the spacemen. And down to the republics of Tajik, Uzbek, Kazakh, in a journey so different and so illuminating."
