HENRY YEVELE, c 1320 to 1400: THE LIFE OF AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT., Harvey, John H.
5 Harvey, John H. HENRY YEVELE, c 1320 to 1400: THE LIFE OF AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT.
London B.T. Batsford 1946 Second Edition Hard Cover Good Fair
86 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, drawings, floor plans, colour frontispiece. "Henry Yevele's life ranged roughly from 1320 to 1400, a period during which the architectural experiments of the previous century gradually became crystallised in the enduring national style which, for want of a better term, the textbooks call 'Perpendicular'. At the time of his apprenticeship, the new fashion had been devised, but not mastered, and many patrons of art must have been reluctant to find money for costly experiements, so long as the final effect was in doubt. Only the appearance of Perpendicular masterpieces would be convincing; and for the making of masterpieces the first requisite is a master. The master, a truly great one, was at hand, and his name was Henry Yevele. This book, which brilliantly surveys one of the greatest periods of architectural achievement in the history of our race, is the first full-length biography of an English architect of the Middle Ages. With a wealth of detail and a balanced critical insight, John Harvey convinces us that, throughout the period, Yevele was giving to English architecture a unity and strength comparable to the qualities with which his friend, Chaucer, was endowing our language. It includes a great deal of recent research never before brought together, and is richly illustrated with plans and details, and by views of the work of Yevele and his contemporaries." A few very small foxing marks on pastedowns, two sharp creases down the front free endpaper - very soft impression of creases up to page x, tiny dent at bottom edge of boards, slight fading to spine and hinge color and also at top edge of boards, ver light edge wear/soiling. Dust jacket has pieces missing at topand bottom of spine, edge creases, several small edge tears and very small chips, some light browning, some soiling on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

10 MacKenzie, Lewis. PEACEKEEPER: THE ROAD TO SARAJEVO.
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1993 155054098X / 9781550540987 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
345 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "Brave, tough, resourceful, and, rarest of all, blessed with an irreverent sense of humour, (Major-General Lewis) MacKenzie needed all those qualities for the biggest assignment of his military career: striving for peace among the warring factions in the former Yugoslavia. In this riveting memoir, MacKenzie describes how he created Sector Sarajevo, and with a 30-nation UN force set out to liberate the airport to receive desperately needed food and medical supplies. MacKenzie's outstanding and unorthodox leadership catapulted him to the status of an international celebrity, as he used the media - 'the only weapon I had' - to maximum advantage. Against the daily drama of shelling, sabotage, murder and shameless propaganda, motivated by ethnic hatreds, MacKenzie's adventures in Sarajevo read like a war novel - except that it is all tragically true. With the verve of a natural storyteller, (he) also recounts the often bizarre highlights of eight previous peacekeeping tours in the Middle East, Cyprus and Vietnam. From bluffing his way through the Turkish-Cypriot lines to boisterous forays into Saigon's netherworld; from basketball in the Gaza Strip to dodging sniper fire in Sarajevo; from daring diplomatic improvisations to bluntly outspoken criticisms of the UN bureaucracy: here is a veteran peackeeper's frank, funny and unforgettable story." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine/front hinge. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, tiny tear and wrinkling at bottom of front hinge/front panel.

Toronto Macmillan Company of Canada 1957 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Allan Fleming, jacket design.
138 pp, 8 1/2" H. "(S)hows Canada in an unfamiliar light - the light of an energetic and sometimes savage self-criticism. The stately pine (one of those symbolic vegetables that grow like weeds in the Canadian climate) is here blasted and eaten away by the native fires of satire and invective. But though the light is unfamiliar it has burnt steadily since the mid-nineteenth century. Almost as soon as Canadian poets appeared they were sounding a disrespectful note - a loud raspberry which echoes rudely down the corridors of history to our own day." Preface by David L. Thomson. Arranged under the headings: Prologue; True Patriot Love; Solid Citizens; Snow, Dust, Hail and Rust; The Purse-Proud Prelate; Indigenous Throstles; We Stand on Guard; Private Hells. Concludes with Notes; Acknowledgements and Index of Authors. The superintendent follows a tortuous pa th, leading not only through the underworld of London, but deeper, much deeper into that twilight world of international intrigue and sudden death. CORONATION: A HISTORY OF KINGSHIP AND THE BRITISH MONARCHY., Strong, Roy.
17 Strong, Roy. CORONATION: A HISTORY OF KINGSHIP AND THE BRITISH MONARCHY.
HarperCollins, London, 2005, first edition.
556 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0007160542 Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "As a boy of sixteen, Roy Strong watched the grand procession carrying Queen Elizabeth II to her coronatio n. The spectacle was considered the greatest public event of the century. But now, several years later, many people have little notion of what a coronation is and are unaware of the rich resonances of the ritual, or its deep significance i n t e r m s of the committal of monarch to people. This book is the first of its kind - a comprehensive history to set each coronation into its political, social, religious and cultural context. The story is one of constant re-invention as the s er v ic e ha s ha d to respond to the changes in fortune of the monarchy and the country, everything from legitimising usurpers to reconciling a Catholic rite to the tenets of Protestantism. It had to be recreated from scratch after the restoratio n o f Cha rl es II in 1 660. By telling the story of each coronation in turn, Roy Strong recounts the history of British monarchy since the 10th century, and looks forward to the coronation of Prince Charles. The ceremony's musical history alone is on e of ex tra ord inar y r ichness - involving Henry Purcell, Handel, Edward Elgar and William Walton. The celebratory poetry, art and spectacular engravings published at coronations are all explored, as is the more recent role of photographe rs. Me ticul ousl y re sear ched, wit h rich visual material, including illuminated manuscripts, engravings, portraits, photographs and television stills, this will be the definitive book for many years to come." Very light wrinkling at top/botto m of spi ne, sm all a rea o f soi ling a t top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light rubbing and soiling, several very small tears - some with creases at top edge of rear panel - archivally taped, minor edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Very G ood-

Toronto Natural Heritage 2008 1550027603 / 9781550027600 First Edition. Soft Cover Fine
190 pp, small 4to (10" H). B&w photographs, map. "The Almaguin Highlands region, located approximately eighty kilometres north of the halfway point to the North Pole and rising high above sea level, was once coveted for its majestic white pine, game and silver birch. More than a century later; much of its unspoiled wilderness areas remain intact, ready for new exploration. Today, its enviable position of being just north of Muskoka and within easy driving distance of southern Ontario has made the Highlands the logical choice for the eco-tourist seeking new adventures. (This book) paints a lively picture of what the area must have been like in the early days. Here are the lumberjacks who ventured into the last of the great timber stands to cut down what was left of the white pine, and the intrepid settlers who trekked across the terrain not that far behind them - sometimes with little more than blazed trails as their guide. And here are the boat builders whose steamers and tugs traversed the multiple waterways, so important to the district, and the men and women of all walks of life who contributed to the spirit of the times."
