A WARTIME LOG., Beltrone, Art and Beltrone, Lee.
2 Beltrone, Art and Beltrone, Lee. A WARTIME LOG.
Charlottesville, Virginia Howell 1994 0943231906 / 9780943231907 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Authors.
208 pp, 9 3/4" H. Signed on front free endpaper: "Art Beltrone / Lee Beltrone". Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "With watercolors extracted from food can labels and paint brushes made from their own hair, downed World War II American airmen recreated their recollections of combat and experiences as prisoners of war in blank books provided by the Y.M.C.A. With remarkable ingenuity and creativity, prisoners used their Wartime Logs as a mental escape from the physical confinement of German prison camps. Sketches, illustrations, poetry, diary entries - all were recorded in each prisoner's log book. (This book), printed and bound in roughly the size and format of the originals, features artwork and anecdotes from more than a dozen log books kept by U.S. Army Air Force pilots and crewmen held prisoner in German camps during WWII. Adventure, boredom, laughter, horror, and courage fill these pages. (It) provides a unique look into a chapter of history that should never be forgotten and will inspire us all." Minor lean to spine, slight waviness to top/bottom edges of text block. Dust jacket has some light edge wrinkling, light rubbing on panels, three very small dents on rear hinge.

F-15 EAGLE., Braybrook, Roy.
7 Braybrook, Roy. F-15 EAGLE.
London Osprey 1991 1855321491 / 9781855321496 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Very Good
128 pp, 11 7/8" H. Profuesly illustrated with colour photographs. "Built to counter the seemingly invincible Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat, the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle has proven to be more than a match for any 'red' fighter interceptor for over 15 years. Carrying the all-seeing Hughes AN/APG-63 radar inside its massive radome, the interception capabilities of the Eagle have been matched only by its US Navy rival, the F-14 Tomcat. Although a large aeroplane, the Eagle is incredibly agile, with plenty of power from its twin afterburning Pratt & Whitney F-100 turbofans. These allow a pilot to exploit the F-15 Eagle's suberb in-flight characteristics to the fullest extent. Entering frontline squadron service with the USAF's Tactical Air Command in late 1974, the F-15 has gone on to equip no less than six tactical fighter wings based in the USA, and one apiece in Germany and Japan. Five Air National Guard units also bolster the front line ranks with earlier version of the mighty Eagle. All USAF operators of the potent F-15 are graphically featured in this stunning volume. A chapter on the rarely illustrated Japanese Air Self-Defence Force complements the star-spangled F-15s." Minor edge wear, small faint erasure mark at top of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, some areas of light wrinkling at top edge.

F/A-18 HORNET., Braybrook, Roy.
8 Braybrook, Roy. F/A-18 HORNET.
London Osprey 1991 1855321513 / 9781855321519 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 11 7/8" H. Profuesly illustrated with colour photographs. "The 'son' of the Northrop YF-17 Cobra, the Hornet grew both in weight and capability after being ordered by the Navy to replace the venerable Vought A-7 Corsair II. Now an integral part of the modern carrier air wing, the F/A-18 has dramatically increased the capabilities of fighter and attack squadrons already embarked aboard the Navy's 15-strong carrier fleet. Not all Hornets spotted in American skies are Navy property though, the 'flying leathernecks' of the US Marine Corps having received their first F/A-18s at virtually the same time as the 'blue water' force. Over a dozen USMC squadrons are now equipped with the versatile Hornet. Travelling further afield, Canada, Australia, Spain and South Korea have all chosen the F/A-18 to fulfill the fighter/attack requirements of their respective air forces past the year 2000. (This book) takes you aboard ship with a frontline Navy squadron as they patrol the barren expanses of the Atlantic, or takes you on a scrub skimming attack sortie over the parched wastelands of the 'outback' with the Royal Australian Air Force." Book slightly cocked, very light edge wear, small faint erasure mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor edge wrinkling.

FIGHTER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN., Deighton, Len. Introduction by A.J.P. Taylor.
11 Deighton, Len. Introduction by A.J.P. Taylor. FIGHTER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
Edison, NJ Castle 2000 0785812083 / 9780785812081 Reprint. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
261 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps/battle plans, cartoons, drawings. "Drawing on the mastery of technical detail he displayed so brilliantly in 'Bomber' (the story of an RAF bombing raid), (Deighton) gives us an altogether factual and comprehensive picture of the men, the machines, the strategies (and the blunders), and the events on both sides. He shows us the British squandering precious fighter planes in a futile effort to halt the German blitzkrieg in France, and the Germans refusing to believe in the effectiveness of British radar. He compares the fire power, combat tactics, and ground control, analyzing the performance of both the planes (the Messerschmitt broke up in mid-air more often than the Spitfire) and the pilots (men such as the fabled Douglas Bader, who flew better with two artificial legs than other men with two real ones; or 'Onkel Theo' Osterkamp, a WWI German ace who became an ace in WWII as well, until he was finally ordered off combat flying at the age of forty-eight). We see the British General Staff divided against itself (after the Battle, the man most responsible for the British victory - Sir Hugh Dowding, Commander in Chief, Fighter Command - was dismissed); the German High Command, unsure of its objectives; exaggerated British claims (and an almost fatal shortage of pilots); and German technical superiority that was continually undercut by Nazi incompetence." Small Christmas gift inscription on half-title page, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

66 pp, 12" H. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "During the darkest days of World War II, as bombs fell on the home population of Great Britain and the firestorm that had raged across Europe was poised to engulf the world, there were precious few ways for the Allies to strike back at their enemy. One of their most powerful weapons was the magnificent Avro Lancaster bomber, with its legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, its enormous bomb bay, and its steadily improving electronic countermeasures that enabled it to strike deep into the heart of Nazi Germany. With wonderfully detailed photographs of various crew positions, instrumentation, engines, and armament, along with archival WWII photographs, you'll fly with the pilots and crew of this aviation classic." AFTER THE WAR WAS OVER., Foreman, Michael.
20 Foreman, Michael. AFTER THE WAR WAS OVER.
New York Arcade 1996 1559703296 / 9781559703291 First American Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine Michael Foreman.
95 pp, oblong (7 13/16" H x 10 3/8" D). Profusely illustrated in color and b&w with the author/artist's drawings and photographs. "(S)hows, throught the eyes of the boy Foreman was, Britain rebuilding (after WWII). In the summer of 1945, victory bonfires burn and the British Empire spans the globe anew. As the lads come home, the beaches are cleared of barbed wire and mines. Bomb sites become playgrounds, and blitzed gardens the occasion for a filched apple or potato. Foreman recalls the ongoing rationing, prefab houses, and baths in tin tubs; movies with Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, and Robin Hood with an American accent; newspaper routes and soccer madness; school days and his discovery of the opposite sex. He also describes his development as an artist; the magical revelation of 'Treasure Island', first read aloud by a teacher; postwar comic books; his early drawing lessons; and the art school where his hobby started to become a vocation. Foreman's evocative color illustrations depict the detail of daily life and include period documents. (This book) recreates an enchanting world - a time of innocence, wonder, and the simple pleasures, illuminated by the artist's vivid memory. Here is a marvelous achievement and an enduring memoir for all ages."
