1 Axelrod, Alan, commentary. Arrangements by Dan Fox. SONGS OF THE WILD WEST.
New York Metropolitan Musem of Art / Simon & Schuster 1991 0671747754 / 9780671747756 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
128 pp, oblong large 8vo (9 1/2" H x 10 3/4" D). Decorated endpapers, profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photographs, reproductions. "Nothing captures the spirit of the Old West better than the jaunty tunes and classic ballads the cowboys and settlers sang, songs richly represented in this visually stunning volume. Panoramic in scope, the 45 songs, coupled with works of art from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming, chronicle the stirring saga of westward expansion and reflect every facet of life during one of the most exciting periods in our nation's history. The lore of the West intrigued many artists, and the works featured include paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, and N.C. Wyeth, as well as a myriad of fascinating artifacts: saddles, spurs, guns, guitars, a stagecoach ticket, a Navajo blanket, and other objects that provide a vivid picture of life in the West. A lively and intriguing text further illuminates this bygone world, exploring the history of the songs, their lyrics, the accompanying art, and the development of the West. The music, arranged for beginning to intermediate musicians and accompanied by chords for the guitar or banjo, is suitable for piano, organ, violin, or recorder." Paul Hamlyn, (London, 1967).
439 pp. + 16 pp of measured drawings at rear, 4to (12" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs of instruments, details, bows and labels, measured drawings, color frontispiece. "The main body of the text is devoted to a complete and authoritative alphabetical list of all the craftsmen known to have made violins or other stringed instruments as works of art in the German-speaking lands of Central Europe. It incorporates all the researches of earlier authorities, corrects some previous misconceptions, and sheds new light not only on established figures but also on the rising generation of 20th century makers. Each of over 4,000 makers is described in a brief biography, and there are comments on the style, tone and value of their instruments. There are over 800 photographs showing clearly the important points to look for in the work of the chief masters, and illustrating labels known to be authentic as an aid to identification, and there is an introduction outlining the growth of the major German schools...a complete historical survey of the subject, and traces the development of the craft in such famous centres as Markneukirchen, Mittenwald, the Tyrol, Vienna and Stuttgart. It draws a vivid picture of the nature of life and the changing structure of society in Central Europe during the centuries from the time when the violin developed from more primitive instruments right up to the present day." Alfred A. Knopf Canada, (Toronto, 1993), Ist edition.
232 pp, 8vo, soft cover. "The appearance of a young storyteller with a unique fictional voice is cause for celebration. Yann Martel's title story won the 1991 Journey Prize, and was included in the 1991-92 Pushcart Prize Anthology. The intensely human tragedy that lies at its heart is told with a spare, careful elegance that resonates long after it has ended - and is matched through all the stories by an original and dazzling freshness." Contains: The Facts behind the Helsinki Roccamatios ; The Time I Heard The Private Donald J. Rankin String Concerto with One Discordant Violin, by the American Composer John Morton; Manners of Dying; The Mirror Machine. By the author of "Life of Pi". Toronto Dundurn Press 2010 1554887682 / 9781554887682 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
430 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w and colour photographs. "(A)n account of the life and cultural contribution of one of Canada's most talented conductors. Born in 1924, he made his Toronto Symphony conducting debut at the age of eighteen. He went on to become the artistic director of the Winnipeg Symphony, a conductor with the Toronto Symphony, and a guest conductor of virtually every major symphony orchestra in Canada. Feldbrill was also the first conductor-in-residence at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music, from 1968 to 1982. However, what really set Feldbrill apart was his limitless enthusiasm and support of Canadian music and young musicians, as well as his insistence on playing the music of Canadian composers despite the reluctance of some orchestral managers and the initial opposition of audiences at the time. In doing so he reached out to young people and trained many to take their places as members of Canadian orchestras from coast to coast." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.
