Deserted by her wastrel husband, with five small children to support, she embarked on a purple career with gusto and practicalit y. 'Always the best' might have been her motto, for she became the beloved of Europe's wealthiest and most illustrious men. Paris, London, Venice, Rome - all the glittering meccas of Eighteenth Century society served as backgrounds for h e r a m o r o u s exploits. She lived well, loved luxuriously, and bore countless children until she was well past middle age. And though her end disproved the title 'fortunate', still Roxana accepted calamity with her customary fortitude, and o ne f e el s su re t ha t in time she rose to sin again with triumph and magnificence...." 5 Durrell, Lawrence. COLLECTED POEMS.
London Faber and Faber 1960 First Edition Very Good Very Good
288 pp, 8vo (8 1/16" H). "It is primarily as a lyrical poet and a poet of places that (Durrell) is acknowledged to excel, but now that he has assembled in (this book) 'all that the author wishes to preseve' it will be found that the range of feeling and ideas, of wit and experience, and also of style, is remarkable. The poems have been arranged by the author himself, not in chronological order but according to their various kinds. Mr. Durrell is a romantic poet in an age of didactic and sectarian poetry; and by temperament and choice Mediterranean rather than Nordic. All those who have acquired an ear for his verse by reading the volumes in which it has been published, and all those seriously interested in the poetry of the 'thirties, the 'forties and the 'fifties, will wish to have his 'Collected Poems'; other readers will come to it from his novels or his island books." Previous owner's small name stamp at top of front/rear pastedowns - underneath the dust jacket flaps, light toning to top edge of textblock, very light edge wear, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Small puncture to dust jacket at the last 'e' in Lawrence (see scan), minor wear at top/bottom of flap-folds a few small browning marks at top edge. OUT OF SEASON: A TRAVELLER'S TALE OF A WINTER JOURNEY., Hughes, Spike.
9 Hughes, Spike. OUT OF SEASON: A TRAVELLER'S TALE OF A WINTER JOURNEY.
London Robert Hale 1956 First Edition Very Good - Very Good -
156 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "The term 'out of season' is purely relative, of course. The winter's journey which took Spike Hughes and his wife to Sicily and back, by way of Germany and Austria, was made at a time of year which, so far from being out of season, was at the very height of the seaons for their purpose: the study of famous Italian opera houses in full operatic cry, as it were. In the course of a journey of some 4,000 miles (they) found many things to delight them, not the least important being an atmosphere of leisure and an opportunity to stand and stare which can be achieved only out of season. So it was that by visiting in winter places which normally thrive as summer resorts he found time to learn many things which would 'come in useful' to anybody willing to profit from his experiences and likely to spend holidays in those places at a more conventional time of year. In the end, the difference between visiting Italy in winter was the difference between being fussed over and spoiled as a guest and being allowed to live one's own life without having to distinguish one day from another. And that, Spike Hughes believes, is the greatest luxury any form of travel can take." Scattered foxing marks on edges of textblock, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light browning on endpapers. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling and a few tiny tears, light rubbing, light soiling on rear panel, foxing on inside surface.

10 Innes, Michael. THE APPLEBY FILE.
London Gollancz 1975 0575019565 / 9780575019560 First British Edition Very Good Very Good
207 pp, 8vo (8" H). "(A) brilliant collection of Michael Innes short stories about the varied adventures of his great detective, Sir John Appleby, Commissioner of Metropolitan Police (and, later, retired). Appleby has to cope with many diabolically ingenious modes of crime: a faked poltergeist; an exploding antique; a balloon to remove a weapon; an arrow to obliterate a trail. Many of the clues that lead to solutions are equally remarkable: a shubunkin in a pocket; the overpainting of a portrait; photocopies that have stuck together; a broken wine-glass; a coat worn inside-out; a London taxi-cab on the Simplon Pass. And the plots involve elaborate double bluffs: suicides designed to look like murders; X disguised as Y disguised as X; and in 'The Memorial Service' the tangle of impersonation develops into a triple - or is it a quadruple? - bluff." Contents: The Appleby File: The Ascham; Poltergeist; The Fishermen; The Conversation Piece; Death By Water; A Question of Confidence; The Memorial Service. Appleby's Holidays: Two on a Tower; Beggar With Skull; The Exploding Battleship; The Body in the Glen; Death in the Sun; Cold Blood; The Coy Mistress; The Thirteenth Priest Hole. Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, tiny bump at top corner of boards, a few tiny foxing marks on edges of text block very small faint mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has two faint line indentations and tiny dint on front panel, light wrinkling at top of flap-folds.

MORRICE: A GREAT CANADIAN ARTIST REDISCOVERED., Laing, G. Blair. Introduction by Jean Sutherland Boggs.
11 Laing, G. Blair. Introduction by Jean Sutherland Boggs. MORRICE: A GREAT CANADIAN ARTIST REDISCOVERED.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1984 0771045689 / 9780771045684 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good James Wilson Morrice.
224 pp, 11 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated with colour reproductions. "James Wilson Morrice is one of the twentieth century's most talented and lyrical painters. Whether depicting a Quebec village in winter, a Paris cafe, or a North African market place, Morrice's vibrant colours and perfectly balanced compositions capture his subjects in a suspended timelessness. The story of (his) life is no less colourful than his paintings. The young James's passion for art took him in 1890, at the age of twenty-five, from his wealthy Montreal background to Paris. It was here, among other artists such as Matisse, and writers such as Somerset Maugham and Arnold Bennett, that he felt a true kinship. And it was not long before Morrice's paintings were seen in the great Salons of Paris, and sent to the Montreal Art Association and the Canadian Art Club in Toronto for exhibition. Laing's fascinating account reveals the complexity of Morrice's genius and gives a definitive picture of James Wilson Morrice - the man, the artist, and his work." Slight waviness at top/bottom edges of text block. Dust jacket has light toning on spine, flap-folds and some edges; one small edge tear archivally taped; minor edge wrinkling.

HARLEQUIN ON THE MOON: COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE AND THE VISUAL ARTS., Lawner, Lynne.
12 Lawner, Lynne. HARLEQUIN ON THE MOON: COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE AND THE VISUAL ARTS.
New York Harry N. Abrams 1998 0810911949 / 9780810911949 Very Good+ Very Good+
208 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. "Commedia dell'arte is the first modern theater - inspiration to Shakespeare, Moliere, Goldoni, Mozart, and Balanchine and forerunner of the modern stage comedy. Since its invention as a popular entertainment in Renaissance Italy, commedia, with its stock characters, its absurd and witty plots, and its utterly charming personalities, has captivated audiences high and low, from the street fairs where Punch and Judy reigned to the exquisitely refined court of the Sun King. This book traces the history of commedia from its beginnings through many transformations to its rediscovery in the experimental theater of today. The depictions of commedia in the visual arts has a rich history. From Tiepolo and Watteau to Beardsley, Picasso, Hockney, and other modern masters, painters have found great resonance and meaning in the clowns and lovers of commedia. Here the visual and dramatic arts meet, giving birth to styles of art and performance at once clever, hilarious, poignant, tragic, and eternal. Lynne Lawner traces all these threads, unearthing rare texts of commedia plays, discovering myriad version of the ever-fascinating Harlequin, Pierrot, Columbine, and Pulcinella, relating the gossip of courts and theaters, and revealing the ways in which these figures and their classic stories - the sly servant, the foolish soldier, the clever maid, the quack doctor - have arisen again and again in art." Light waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

BYRON'S TRAVELS., Massie, Allan. Introduction by Elizabeth Longford.
13 Massie, Allan. Introduction by Elizabeth Longford. BYRON'S TRAVELS.
Sidgwick & Jackson, London, 1988, first edition.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0283994088 B&w photographs, reproductions. "As a young man in search of varied experience and adventure, (Byron) began his first 'grand tour' in July 1809, six months after his twenty -first birthday. It took him by way of Portugal, Southern Spain, Sardinia, and Malta to Athens, Smyrna and Constantinople. Inspired to write as he travelled, his return to England saw the publication of the first two cantos of the largely a u t o b i o g raphical poem about a moral outlaw, 'Childe Harold', and the Oriental tales, both of which became bestsellers in Regency London. His reputation as a poet was established. His second departure from England was precipitated by the b r ea ku p of h is m ar riage to Anne Isabelle Milbanke. Pursued by scandal and rumours, and finding England both intolerable and intolerant, he set off for Italy. His route took him via Switzerland, where he spent time with Shelley, and Milan, w he re he me t t he gre at Fre nch writer Stendhal. He was to live for the next seven years in Venice, Ravenna, Pisa and Genoa. The Venetian years, from 1816 to 1819, were vivid, dissipated, productive. 'Childe Harold' was finished, 'Beppo' writte n, 'Do n J uan ', h is mast erp iece , begun. He engaged in revolutionary politics, embarked on torrid love affairs and became, after Napoleon had been exiled to Elba, the most remarkable celebrity of his day. Then, in July 1823, he left for Greec e t o br ing what aid he could to the G reek struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire. Although he was talking of visiting America and living in retirement in England, it was in Greece that he died, at the age of thirty-six. 'Byron's Tr avel s' is ric h and reve ali ng. A cop ious l etter-writer and sometimes diarist, Byron wrote so vividly of his travels that much of the story can be told in his own words. Allan Massie quotes these where appropriate and takes us on the journe ys wi th Byr on, f ollowi ng him thr ough th e yea rs and placing him in the political and cultural setting of his time. The result is a compelling new portrait of Byron, silhouetted against a backcloth of the Mediterranean." Toronto Dundurn Press 1996 1550022644 / 9781550022643 Near Fine
144 pp, 8vo (9" H). B&w maps. "(S)eeks to provide illustrations of Arctic mysteries and fictions which often occur as a result of misconceptions of Arctic geography. The chapters are extremely varied in subject matter, and conclusions are in the domain of speculation. The book begins with very early examples of northern travels starting with the probable adventures of Pytheas the Greek, Brendan the Irish monk and the four medieval odysseys of Adam of Bremen, Nicolas of Lynn, Prince Henry Sinclair and Zeno of Venice. The next chapter addresses misconceptions of polar environments, especially illusory land and visualization of mermaids and mermen. In addition, the book deals with polar myths such as the open polar sea which existed only in people's minds, but nevertheless had great influence on navigation and exploration. No account of polar enigmas would be complete without reference to the Franklin expedition, the possible fate of his lost ships and the debate over whether his men committed cannibalism. The book concludes with a deliberation on whether Cook or Perry acutally did reach the North Pole, hinting that perhaps neither of them reached their objective." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear.
