Among them were a tailor, a teacher and a cabinet-maker. How surprised these ordinary citizens would be to see that their little group has grown into an organization of over 3000 members in all parts of the country, in the United States and overseas. Twenty-two cities from St John's to Victoria have local chapters or 'Centres' of the RASC. Novices and naturalists, amateurs and professional scientists all play important roles in this remarkable success story. General readers will be surprised to find out what amateurs can learn from the sky, at meetings and through the Society's publications. Leaders of other volunteer organizations, educators looking for ways to promote greater appreciation of science, and local historians interested in the role of the Society in the life of their communities will find helpful ideas in this book. And members themselves will be better equipped to make decisions for the future through an appreciation of the development of the Society, its individual Centres and the men and women who have led them." Norman University of Oklahoma Press 1990 0806127317 / 9780806127316 Soft Cover Fine
176 pp, 8 3/6" H. B&w reproductions, maps. "In the summer of 1792, two Spanish schooners, the 'Sutil' and the 'Mexicana', were ordered to inspect the Pacific Coast from Vancouver Island to Monterey. The schooners were commanded by two youthful naval officers, Dionisio Alcala Galiano and Cayetano Valdes. Assisted by their scribe and artist, Jose Cadero, they recorded their efforts to find the so-called Strait of Anian, a Spanish Northwest Passage. The full account, here translated into English, reveals much new information on the indigenous peoples of California, Spanish-Indian relations, and the successes and failures of the Franciscan missionaries. Also included is a vocabulary and catechism of the Carmel Mission Indians missing in earlier editions. In introductory chapters and notes, Donald C. Cutter supplements the authors' observations with a brief history of California and biographical information on the authors, other naval officers, and the soldiers and friars." THE MEANING OF PUCK: HOW HOCKEY EXPLAINS MODERN CANADA., Dowbiggin, Bruce.
18 Dowbiggin, Bruce. THE MEANING OF PUCK: HOW HOCKEY EXPLAINS MODERN CANADA.
Toronto Key Porter 2008 1554700418 / 9781554700417 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
232 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "In a series of essays that is a road trip across the nation's cultural landscape, (Dowbiggin) shows how the national passion for hockey reflects - or deflects - the issues of globalization, regionalism, anti-Americanism, militarism, violence, racism and greed. Why are Canadians, for instance, such strenuous advocates of pacifism and non-militarism around the world while simultaneously embracing - and promoting - the world's most vicious and violent brand of hockey? As the legion of apologists for Todd Bertuzzi's thuggish play dramatize, it's not the Americans who popularize violence in hockey. It's us. Dowbiggen tries to come to terms with the absurd hero worship of The Great One. Or why Canadians so smugly spoof American ignorance while making a 'cultural' icon of Don Cherry. Is it because in a nation without rules or standards he still stands for something, however distasteful? (The author) conducts an autopsy on the essentially permanent futility of the Toronto Maple Leafs and shows how the team's declining fortunes mirror the shift in power and influence from Ontario to the West, particularly Alberta. As fans outside Ontario chafe at the Toronto-centrism of 'Hockey Night in Canada', they seek a new locus of hockey influence. Dowbiggin explores questions such as: Why the Vancouver Canucks are the new frontier? What do you mean the Montreal Canadiens are owned by an American? Why is hockey such a safe place for characters such as Alan Eagleson, Graham James and David Frost to hide? And why is it so hard to get them out once they've attached themselves to power? Most of all: Why does the sniff of the Canadian jock have such a hypnotic effect on our culture? 'The Meaning of Puck' is a funny, acidic, irreverent, argumentative and often infuriating but always thought-provoking look into the fabric of a nation straining to keep old traditions alive and incorporate new national myths." Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
