At first she hated Italy, where it always seemed to rain, but when she arrived at her relative's villa outside of Florence and met the energetic Cordelia, the situation began to change at once. If it had not been for Cordelia, Maria would never have ventured beyond the garden of the villa and then she would never have visited the little town at the foot of the hill, nor would she have ever seen the wonderful painting that was to mean so much..." 3 Beaty, David. STRANGE ENCOUNTERS: MYSTERIES OF THE AIR.
London Methuen 1982 0413397602 / 9780413397607 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very minor rubbing, very minor edge wrinkling, tiny scuff on rear flap-fold.

618 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w decorations by Enrico Arno, b&w photographs, musical notations. "(A) notable milestone in the collection and presentation of oral literature and traditions from black communities in the Western Hemisphere. It demonstrates the powerful cultural influence of Africa on this side of the Atlantic. (I)ncludes a wide array of orally transmitted traditions of the numerous, sometimes disparate, African-American cultures of the New World. Among these traditions are tales of scoundrels, heroes, rollicking adventures, friendship, and much more: songs, myths, myth-legends, epic-like narrations, and recollections of historical happenings. There are descriptions of cult life, around which many traditions and beliefs flow; of music and dance, which have an integral connection with traditional ways; and of the social scene in places where Africans and Europeans, or white and black ideas intermingled and became Afro-American. (This book) perceives the interconnections of cultural inheritances throughout the Afro-American region and the local divergences as well. Early sections of the book survey the traditions and oral literature of Spanish, French, and English-speaking islands of the Caribbean, and of areas of Central and South America inhabited by people of African descent. There follows an extensive section devoted to the tales, beliefs, recollections, songs, religious epics, and a wide variety of oral creations of blacks in the United States. The Appendixes include a number of African stories and descriptions that point up the impact of African traditions on the cultures of Afro-America. Very light browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

150 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0905778456 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "For both the Axis and Allied Powers, Malta was a vital key to victory - not only in the Mediterranean, but in North Africa and the Middle East as well. In this new edition of his highly-praised book....(the author) provides one of the most intriguing and realistic accounts of the struggle for possession of the island, a fight to the death which lasted two-and-a-ha l f y e a r s , during which time 14,000 tons of bombs were dropped on a defiant population. The book is largely based on the diaries of Lord David Douglas-Hamiton, the author's uncle, who was sent out to Malta as a Spitfire Squadron Leader at a ti me wh en t he i sl and was sustaining heavier bombing than London at the height of the Blitz, and the Axis forces were preparing for invasion. The author's scrupulous research, combined with his uncle's uniquely authoritative viewpoint, vivid ly rec r eat es the pe rio d, the comradeship and the grimness of life on the beleaguered island. The air battle, which was the second largest of the entire war, involved some of the most famous fighter aces of World War II, including 'Screwball' Beu rlin g and Lad die Luca s. The y all played a vital part in what proved to be one of the greatest defensive and strategic operations of all time, and their exploits, along with those of many others, are recorded here, a reminder of their indomit able spir it in the face of a ppa llin g odds." Minor bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine, 1" line of very tiny indentations on front panel. Near Fine/Very Good+

WILLIAM HEATH ROBINSON., Hamilton, James.

London Pavilion 1992 1851457194 / 9781851457199 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine William Heath Robinson.
151 pp, 12 1/8" H. B&w and colour reproductions, photographs. "In this first fully illustrated monograph of William Heath Robinson's life and work, James Hamilton makes a refreshingly new exploration of the personality of this convivial family man and deeply serious artist. Through fascinating new insights, he traces the influences on his art, the development of his uniquely individual humorous style, and the unexpected path that his career followed: the switch from landscapes to book illustration, and early success as illustrator of Poe, Cervantes and Hans Andersen; the creation of his engaging character Uncle Lubin, his cartoons for magazines, and the First World War anti-German satires which earned him an enthusiastic following. Only after he had submitted his illustrations for a 'Complete Works of Shakespeare' in 1922, promptly cancelled, did Heath Robinson turn away from literary illustration. Then came the immensely popular books on golf and railways and motoring, murals and decorations for a liner, gadgets for the Ideal Home Exhibition of 1934, and a wealth of inspired magazine and commercial work. Hamilton rounds off his account of Heath Robinson's life and career with detailed appendices, including a chronology of his life, an important discussion of his sources, comprehensive bibliographies, and lists of his exhibitions, advertising work and ephemera. Published here for the first time are examples of the recently discovered Shakespeare illustrations." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.
