1 Bercuson, David J. MAPLE LEAF AGAINST THE AXIS: CANADA'S SECOND WORLD WAR.
Toronto Stoddart 1995 0773728619 / 9780773728615 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
316 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Here, in all its passion and drama, is the story of how the Canadian Army, Navy, and Air Force fought during the Second World War, from the Battle of Hong Kong to the Rhine River crossing and the significant part Canadians played in the Allied victory. David Bercuson, one of Canada's top military historians, covers the war on the ground, the naval war in the North Atlantic and elsewhere, and the air war - both the bomber offensive and the story of those Canadians who flew everything from Canso Reconnaissance aircraft in the Indian Ocean to Typhoon fighter bombers with the Second Tactical Air Force in Europe. And he does it through recounting the stories of men and women who were there." Very light soiling to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very light edgewear/rubbing.

FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS., Boileau, John.
2 Boileau, John. FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS.
Formac, Halifax, 2004.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 088780621X B&w and colour photographs. "In the search for the perfect flying machine, hydrofoils were born. In 1919, Alexander Graham Bell and his young collaborator, Casey Baldwin, broke a world spe ed record when their hydrofoil prototype, HD4, skimmed across Lake Bras d'Or at 61.5 knots. This book is a complete re-examination of the Canadian research into hydrofoil vessels in the twentieth century. It describes how Baldwin and his c o l l e a g u e s, generously supported by Mabel Bell and under the guidance of the great inventor, built and tested numerous prototypes until they finally succeeded in building a high-speed hydrofoil for the navy. By the end of the Second World Wa r, C an ad a ha d th e third largest navy in the world and was set to be at the forefront of anti-submarine warfare. The Bell-Baldwin research was the foundation of the development of a small, fast vessel that could patrol the oceans, protectin g t he Wes t f rom t he Co ld War menace. Author John Boileau introduces the team of naval architects and engineers who tested prototypes in Halifax Harbour during the 1950s and 1960s. Their efforts led to HMCS Bras d'Or, the ultra-modern hydrofoi l ve sse l th at e stab lis hed an oth er world record before it was mothballed. Like the Avro Arrow story, 'Fastest in the World' exposes how brilliant innovation is not a guarantee of success for Canadian designers." Fine

ROBERT PARKER AND COMTE DE MERODE-WESTERLOO: THE MARLBOROUGH WARS. MILITARY MEMOIRS SERIES., Chandler, David, ed. (Robert Parker / Comte de Merode-Westerloo). Note on series by Peter Young.
3 Chandler, David, ed. (Robert Parker / Comte de Merode-Westerloo). Note on series by Peter Young. ROBERT PARKER AND COMTE DE MERODE-WESTERLOO: THE MARLBOROUGH WARS. MILITARY MEMOIRS SERIES.
Longmans, Green, London, 1968, first edition.
276 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Maps/battle plans, 2 portraits. "The War of the Spanish Succession (1701-13) holds a special place in the annals of several European armies. The protracted struggle produced a number of great cap tains - John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough, Prince Eugene of Savoy and the French Marshal Villars - and their respective martial achievements still exert a strong fascination. Two of their contemporaries who throw a considerable amoun t o f l i ght on the day-to-day conduct of Marlborough's most important campaigns, with their roll-call of famous successes - Blenheim, Raimillies, Oudenarde, Malplaquet, the lines of Ne Plus Ultra - are Capt. Robert Parker of the Royal Regiment o f F oo t o f Ir eland (whose 'Memoirs', though often briefly quoted, have not been republished since they first appeared some time after his death); and the Comte de Merode-Westerloo whose 'Memoires' are hardly known outside Belgium. In almost ever y re spe ct t he y p resent striking contrasts, in birth, rank and character, and their differences are reflected in their writing. Parker, an Irishman of obscure origins, reached the relatively humble rank of Captain of Grenadiers. His whole mil it ary lif e w as int imat ely bound up with his regimental family. His feelings for Marlborough at times amount to uncritical hero-worship. From first to last he reveals himself as a highly competent professional soldier of modest and unpretenti ous cha racte r. The Com te de Merode-Westerloo, a great magnate in Flanders with a redoubtable ancestry behind him, eventually became a Field-Marshal of the Holy Roman Empire - not that he had begun the war in the Emperor's service, but in that of h is en emies. B rave to t he poi nt of folly, irascible, touchy, overbearingly arrogant, he was continually in trouble. He bore lasting grudges against the men who, he thought, had conspired to ruin his career - Marlborough and Prince Eugene . As a com mander it i s dou btful whether he possessed sufficient cool judgment to merit his appointment to posts of the highest responsiblity. Expertly edited and annotated, the relevant passages from these two memoirs provide a narrative of t his gr eat war of ext raord inary immedi acy and fascination. It will also be invaluable to students of the period." Small soiling mark on bottom of text block, light wrinkling and tiny tear at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has moderate wear and archiva lly tape d tear a t bott om of spine, light ed ge wear/wrinkling at top of spine and top/bottom of flap-folds, slight browning, minor soiling. 4 Clayton, Aileen. Foreword by Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rosier. THE ENEMY IS LISTENING. THE STORY OF THE Y SERVICE.
Crecy 1993 0947554289 / 9780947554286 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
381 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "The story is told by Aileen Clayton who was selected to work with the Y-Service, the branch of the RAF responsible for the interception of enemy communications, at the beginning of the war. Known at the time as 'Mike' Morris, she was the first WAAF to be commissioned as an intelligence officer and was the first to be awarded the MBE for her service in this field. Her account of the development of the Y-Service and its activities in the Battle of Britain, in the Western Desert, the Middle East and the Mediterranean is a major contribution to our knowledge of the intelligence aspects of the Second World War. It is also the dramatic and frequently moving story of a very young woman doing often dangerous and increasingly complex work in what was then very much a man's world, and of a body of talented, devoted and courageous men and women whose work frequently took them into front line conditions, whether they were suffering aerial bombardment on the South Coast of England, or advancing with the tanks in the Western Desert, or taking part in the landings at Salerno and Anzio. Because of the secrecy in which their work was shrouded during the war and for years afterwards their contribution to the Allied war effort has gone largely unrecognised. (This) is finally and above all a tribute by a remarkable woman to a tenacious and gifted band of men and women." A line of very small creases on front free endpaper, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two corner creases on rear flap, rubbing on panels, three timy edge tears.

430 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H), soft cover. ISBN 1405840625 "After their success in Normandy in the summer of 1944 the Allies thought that the war would be 'over by Christmas'. 9 Hoare, Oliver, introduced and selected by. ENIGMA: CODEBREAKING AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Public Record Office, Richmond, 2002.
Collection of 16 facsimile documents in card case - in original publisher's shrinkwrap. ISBN 1903365406 "The story of Allied codebreaking during the Second World War is one of extraordinary complexity, significance and success. The centre of Brit ain's codebreaking operation was at Bletchley Park (the home of 'Station X' during the war), and it was here the codebreakers raced to decipher German military signals, in particular the 'unbreakable' naval Enigma codes. The special intelli g e n c e ( r eferred to as 'Ultra') that they provided had a major influence on the outcome of hostilities, most notably contributing to crucial successes in the Battle for the Atlantic. Despite Churchill's orders at the end of the war that all e vi de nc e re l at in g to codebreaking be destroyed, many papers, including internal histories, summaries, and copies of decrypts, did survive. Key documents from this unique archive - many of which have never been published before - are faithfull y r epr odu ce d i n thi s p ack, providing a fascinating introduction to Britain's cryptographic secrets of the Second World War." They range from initial experience with pre-Great War precursors and the world-famous Avro 504 trainer through a sequence of prototypes including ultra-light aeroplanes, powerful fighters and bombers. In particular the Avro 504 with its 20 variants, the twin-engined Anson and the mighty Lancaster were built in huge numbers. 470 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and maps/battle plans. "Antwerp, Leopold Canal, Woensdrecht, Breskens Pocket, Walcheren Island - these place names live on in the memories of World War Two veterans of Canadian infantry and armoured divisions who fought in the mud and wet against an unbending enemy. It was 1944 and the Canadian army, with divisions from the U.K., U.S., and Poland, had been given the difficult task of liberating the port of Antwerp and clearing both banks of the Scheldt River. The bitter Battle of the Scheldt lasted 86 days, and took the lives of more than 12,000 Allied soldiers. Brigadier General Denis Whitaker was a lieutenant-colonel in that battle, commanding the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. For this book, he interviewed more than 150 men who fought alongside him on the Dutch polders. Meticulously researched in Europe and Canada, (this book) does not tread lightly on accepted notions of military historians. Revised with a new afterword, this important true story of nineteen- and twenty-year-old soldiers, many of whom died miserably on the sodden polders of Zeeland, deserves to be read again and again."
