STORMS OF CONTROVERSY: THE SECRET AVRO ARROW FILES REVEALED. FOURTH EDITION, REVISED., Campagna, Palmiro. Foreword by Major-General (Retired) Richard Rohmer.
3 Campagna, Palmiro. Foreword by Major-General (Retired) Richard Rohmer. STORMS OF CONTROVERSY: THE SECRET AVRO ARROW FILES REVEALED. FOURTH EDITION, REVISED.
Toronto Dundurn 2010 1554886988 / 9781554886982 4th Edition, Revised. Near Fine
284 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs. "The development of the Avro Arrow supersonic fighter was a remarkable Canadian achievement. Its mysterious cancellation in February 1959 prompted questions that have long gone unanswered. What role did the Central Intelligence Agency play in the scrapping of the project? Who in Canada's government was involved in that decision? What, if anything, did Canada get in return? Who ordered the blowtorching of all the prototypes? And did Arrow technology find its way into the American Stealth fighter/bomber program? When (this book) was first published in 1992, its answers to these questions sent shock waves across the country. Using never-before-released documents, (it) exploded the myth that design flaws, cost overruns, or obsolescence had triggered the demise of the Arrow. Now, in this fully revised fourth edition, complete with two new appendices, the bestselling book bring readers up-to-date on the CF- 105 Arrow, the most innovative, sophisticated aircraft the world had seen by the end of the 1950s." McGraw-Hill Ryerson, Toronto, (1988), 1st edition.
320 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), soft cover. B&w photos. ISBN 0075496755 "In fourteen short, precocious years, from 1946 to 1959, A.V. Roe Canada and its two subsidiaries, Avro Aircraft and Orenda Engines, almost single-handedly set the aviation wor ld on its ear. Their designers and engineers were described by NATO's General Norstad as 'just about the best team anywhere'. By 1958 Avro had designed, and was about to produce, the most sophisticated piece of aviation design and technolog y t h e w orld had ever seen: the Arrow, decades in advance of world competition. Truly, they had redefined the national dream. On Februrary 20, 1959, Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, more at home with the cost of prairie grain than the cost of h i -t ec h a ir craft, cancelled the Arrow and, to ensure the annihilation, ordered the immediate scrapping of the six existing planes. (Mysteriously, one of the aircraft may have escaped the cutters' torches, giving rise to the notion of a 'Pha nto m Arr ow' .) .. . ( tells) the story behind the story of A.V. Roe and the fabled Arrow. A story of the right stuff at the wrong time. A tragedy of government errors. A love story of a nation, a plane, and a dream." SOVIET TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT SINCE 1945., Stroud, John.
7 Stroud, John. SOVIET TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT SINCE 1945.
New York Funk & Wagnalls 1968 First American Edition Very Good Good
318 pp, 8 3/4" H. "(D)escribes in great detail the 40 types of Soviet transport aeroplanes and helicopters which have been produced since the end of the Second World War. As far as possible the design history, layout, structural characteristics and service life of each type has been fully covered. Each type is illustrated by rare photographs and there are three-view drawings of the most important craft. (C)ontains much hitherto unpublished information and gives for the first time a realistic impression of the vast Soviet air transport system. Particularly detailed are the descriptions of the jet and propeller-turbine aircraft with which Aeroflot began re-equipping in the late 1950s and of the new types still to enter service. The development of the entire Tupolev jet series is fully described, as are the Ilyushins, the Antonov propeller-turbine transports and the Mil family of helicopters. The appendices show the organization of Aeroflot and the equipment used in different regions, the Soviet routes operated by each type of aircraft, the world records held by Soviet transport aeroplanes and helicopters, and the fleets of Soviet aircraft - some 1,200 individual aircraft being listed." Tiny bump to top corner of approx. pages 250 to end of book, slight lean to spine, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small bump to top corner of rear cover - minor tiny bump at other corners, tiny bump to top edge of front board. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, very light browning on spine, blue color rubbing/offset on rear panel, four tiny tears archivally taped.
