192 pp, 8" H. Red boards with gilt lettering on spine. "When Cedric Tremain is charged with murder-ing his father, by booby-trapping his fishing boat, all the locals agree that this wouldn't be his sort of crime. But the case against him is strong: he has the motive, the opportunity, the know-how; and there's some hard circumstantial evidence against him. So he is arrested. But there are things about the case which Chief Superintendent Wycliffe doesn't like. So he keeps nosing around. And his investigations lead him into the details of another murder case, one that is now twenty years old. Is it possible that there is some relationship between the two cases, and if so what? As Wycliffe, that most unorthodox of detectives, probes into the present and the past, our own suspicions and assumptions are being constantly challenged." Faint tanning to pastedowns and half of each free endpaper, four page leaves are slightly roughly opened at top edge - page leaf 85/86 has a few very small and tiny edge tears and tiny chips in top margin only. ECOLOGY FOR GARDENERS., Carroll, Steven B. & Salt, Steven D.
4 Carroll, Steven B. & Salt, Steven D. ECOLOGY FOR GARDENERS.
Portland Timber Press 2005 0881926116 / 9780881926118 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Errol D. Hooper Jr.
328 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Colour photographs, b&w drawings. "(T)he authors look at the structure, development, genetics, and reproduction of plants, the most prominent actors in garden ecosystems. They describe other garden organisms, focusing on those with the most influential roles - insects, nematodes, and microorganisms - as well as garden denizens ranging from microscopic prions to elephants. (They) explore nutrient cycles, sunlight, air, water, and the soil - the physical environment within which garden organisms live and function - and they consider the ways plants function in their environment and form communities. They then examine the intricate interactions among garden-dwelling organisms, ranging from the harmful to the beneficial. Once this groundwork is laid, they introduce humans into the garden ecosystem and consider how gardeners can use ecological principles to wisely manage their garden ecosystems. Throughout the book, the authors cite hundreds of examples drawn from personal experience and from the gardening and ecological literature. It becomes clear that gardens - whether a group of potted plants on a patio, a few beds carved out of a lawn, or extensive plantings over several acres - are indeed connected to the natural world in endless and important ways." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny dents on spine and hinges.

10 Linderer, Gary A. BLACK BERETS AND PAINTED FACES: THE STORY OF A LRP IN VIETNAM. (THE EYES OF THE EAGLE / EYES BEHIND THE LINES.)
Garden City, New York Guild America 1991 Book Club Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
486 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "They were the men of F Co., 58th Infantry, LRPs Company (the Howlers) of the 101st Airborne. Now, in this exclusive 2-in-1 volume, comprising 'Eyes of the Eagle' and 'Eyes Behind the Lines', Gary Linderer takes you into the bush with the LRPs. There, you'll see everything he saw and experience everything he did. It began for Linderer when he volunteered to 'serve with the best of the best' in Nam. Within two weeks of landing at Bien Hoa Air Base, he raised his hand again to join the LRPs. He'd put himself in line for some of the hairiest assignments in Nam - performed with some unusual individuals. Linderer at times alternated walking point with a soldier who loved danger so much that he would roam out of touch with his team, or sneak beneath the perimeter wire at night with only a Ka-Bar knife. It didn't end until Linderer had been wounded several times, found himself a team leader surrounded by 'new meat', and won a battlefield commission! Along the way his missions ranged from booby-trapping a VC ams cache followed by a quick extraction back to base, to an operation that was supposed to last a few hours - and turned into a seven-day nightmare in a fog-shrouded valley 'Mr. Charles' called home. Join the men of F Company and see what it was like to be the 'eyes of the Eagle'!" Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light rubbing.

192 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "When the hated factor caught Mata the tinker at the salmon poaching he planned a terrible punishment for him. And it was on the night of Mata's ordeal in the midst of a fearful thunderstorm that Calum Og discovered how the mysterious Cave of Gold had been given its name. But the thunderstorm was the start of a blight upon the little crofting township - week after week of rain and mist, the crops failing for want of sun. And then the Stranger arrived, bringing with him sunshine and fresh hope. On the same day the factor fell from his horse, and lay unconscious, unable to prevent the Stranger from leading the boys in the building of a great fish-trap. But when the herring shoals came up the loch, and the trap was filled with fish, the men turned against the Stranger and drove him from the township; and the seemingly endless sunshine turned to torrential rain. And still the Cave remained a mystery to Calum Og until the night of the flood - the night of the 13th of October 1877, when he learned the secret of that Cave of Gold....What really happened to Mata the tinker? Was it mere chance that the factor fell from his horse the day the Stranger came ashore? Who is the Stranger? Set in the Isle of Skye in the harsh 1870s, (this book) will be enjoyed by everyone with a sense of history and a taste for the unusual." Tiny foxing mark at top edge of rear endpapers, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny scuff on fore-edge of front board. THE GREAT FUR LAND OR SKETCHES FROM LIFE IN THE HUDSON'S BAY TERRITORY., Robinson, H.M.
15 Robinson, H.M. THE GREAT FUR LAND OR SKETCHES FROM LIFE IN THE HUDSON'S BAY TERRITORY.
Toronto Coles 1975 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Fine Very Good- Charles Gasche.
348 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w illustrations. A facsimile of the edition published by G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1879. "In approximately 1870, one H.M. Robinson, writer and traveller, journeyed by dog sled to the Hudson's Bay Territory. The account of his months there is fascinating not only for its first-hand look at life in northern Canada, but also for this cultured man's view of it. The book includes excursions by dog sled and canoe, as well as hunting expeditions. It documents life in a Hudson's Bay Company fort, in a fur-hunters' camp, and in an Indian settlement. There are absorbing accounts of voyageurs, the Blackfeet Indians, 'nomadic' hunters, and medicine men, as well as breath-taking descriptions of the landscape. Since little knowledge of the North was generally available, Mr. Robinson's commentary helped to shape the attitudes of early Canadians, thus eventually influencing government policy. Through this book, modern readers can achieve a more complete idea of what it was like to be alive in the North in the 1870's. But more than that, we are able to trace the roots of the nation's successes and failures in dealing with people and the natural resources of the vast expanse once known as the Hudson's Bay Territory." Dust jacket has light wdge wear/wrinkling, two taped (inside) edge tears - one with creases, minor rubbing and soiling.
