MADAME TUSSAUD: A LIFE IN WAX., Berridge, Kate.
2 Berridge, Kate. MADAME TUSSAUD: A LIFE IN WAX.
Toronto HarperCollins 2006 0002008122 / 9780002008129 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
352 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "When she died in London at the age of ninety, a survivor of one of the most tumultuous epochs in history, Madame Tussaud had travelled far from her inauspicious beginnings in Strasbourg as the daughter of a common soldier and a housekeeper. Moving to Paris as a child, Marie climbed through the ranks of French society as the protegee of charmismatic showman artist Philippe Curtius, and witnessed the French Revolution in all its grisly detail. She survived the Terror and moved to London, where she struggled to find a foothold amidst the desperate competition of showmen from all over Europe. Her touring years were studded with drama and danger, and twice she nearly lost her life and livelihood - first in a shipwreck and then at the hands of a rampaging mob in the Reform riots of 1831. The core of her exhibition was Revolutionary relics given extra potency by her victim survivor status and the famous claims that she was forced to cast the death masks of Marie Antoinette and other members of the royal family, whom she had known personally when employed to teach modelling at Versailles. But did her desire to make a compelling and commercial spectacle of the events unfolding around her extend to moulding her own dramatic story? The story of a business empire sculpted out of the ashes of one of history's most turbulent periods reveal a woman who - in exploiting the human fascination with the rich, the famous and the infamous - was far ahead of her time." Very small bump at bottom corner of both boards, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing.

4 Brockhouse, Robert. THE ROYAL ALEXANDRA THEATRE: A CELEBRATION OF 100 YEARS.
Toronto McArthur 2007 155278648X / 9781552786482 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Edward Burtynsky, photographer.
346 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in colour, b&w and sepiatone with photographs/reproductions. "It was one of those grand civic gestures so loved by the aristocracy of the Gilded Age: a gift to Toronto meant to call the world's attention to its blossoming as a great city. The giver was Cawthra Mulock, 'the boy millionaire', one of the wealthiest men in Canada. The gift was the Royal Alexandra, a magnificent new theatre built - with no regard to cost - to equal the most splendid houses of London, Paris and New York. It was to be the lodestar of North American theatres, attracting the finest performers and the very best in dramatic art to a city that still smarted under the nickname 'Hogtown'. If Cawthra Mulock had known what obstacles lay in the way, he might never have broken ground. He could not have foreseen the cut-throat rivals who would seek to bankrupt him; nor the two World Wars; nor the coming of the movies, radio and television; nor the Great Depression that would close every other theatre in the country. This book tells the story of a Canadian national landmark and beloved Toronto institution, and of the remarkable, dogged and devoted champions - from Mulock to Mirvish - who have kept it alive, thriving and triumphant over 100 years." Small crease at top edge of pages 193 to 204., light waviness to edges og text block, very light wrinking at bottom of spine. Dust jacket very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing, very soft wrinkle on rear panel.

5 Byng, John, Viscount Torrington. Edited by Donald Adamson. RIDES ROUND BRITAIN.
London Folio Society 1996 Hard Cover Very Good Anne Hayward.
505 pp, 8vo (8" H). Bound in quarter orange-brown buckram, Ann Muir marbled paper boards; dark brown endpapers. Plain dark brown slipcase. Frontispiece and 25 half-page and smaller b&w engravings by Anne Hayward, 9 maps by Denys Baker. A countryman at heart, Byng travelled throughout Britain on horseback whenever his position at the Stamp Office would allow him to escape from London. As a chronicler of the eighteenth-century, "Byng travels with an observant though never a roving eye. At times it is the eye of the modern photo-journalist, as when he records a meeting with Humphrey Repton, visits Sarah Siddons in her dressing-room at Birmingham, or glimpses Warren Hastings changing horses on his way to Daylesford. At other times his eye is more like that of the self-taught but well-trained artist, as when he admires the flickering tapers of Yordas Cave or the Kentish hop-pickers working in all haste among the twinkling lights of the hopfields. At Cromford in Derbyshire the bustle and brilliance of Arkwright's great cotton 'manufactory' even blind him to what he basically regards as the horrors of creeping industrialism: 'The cotton mills,' he observes, 'seven storeys high and fill'd with inhabitants, remind me of a first-rate man of war and, when they are lighted up on a dark night, look most luminously beautiful.' As is now widely acknowledged, (Byng) is one of the greatest British travellers of the eighteenth or indeed of any century. Not only has he produced an excellent travel guide (as, in a way, he intended to do); his work is also a major contribution to the social history of England and Wales - and especially Welsh social history. (This book) is, finally, a masterpiece of social observation, written with as fine an eye for detail as Jane Austen's and (like Pepys diary) superb in its delineation of its author's own character." Some light rubbing to paper on boards. Slipcase has minor rubbing and one very small edge bump.

DANCE FOR GODS., Mazumdar, Maxim. Preface by John Gilpin.
16 Mazumdar, Maxim. Preface by John Gilpin. DANCE FOR GODS.
Personal Library, Toronto, 1979.
60 pp, 8 1/2" H, soft cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "(T)he fourth monodrama written by Maxim Mazumdar, tells the story of a Greek actor/dancer, Herakleon, living at the time of the great tragic playwright, Euripides. The play concerns it self with the relationship between the creator and the interpreter of a work of art. In a series of scenes Herakleon's life unfolds: his early failures as an actor, his development as a dancer, and his deep love for his wife and son, Euri. 'The c h aracter of Herakleon is pure invention,' Mazumdar writes in his introduction. 'For the first time I stepped aside from the rules and demands of the biographical monodrama which I had done for the life and times of Oscar Wilde, Rimbaud, and Dia g hi le v. I wanted to write about an ordinary touring actor-dancer living in Greece at the time of Euripides. And I did not want to be tied to classical exactitude. I wanted to be free to interpret the historical facts. So, Herakleon. A man wh o lov es the simple securities of life: his family, his work. And in the background, Euripides, the giant social conscience of his age....A pair of opposites. But the play's conclusion is optimistic. The creator and the interpreter share the same e nd; the y share the dance for gods'." Small bump to top corner of textblock, faint water marks at top/bottom edges of covers, soft crease at top corner of rear cover, minor soiling and browning. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light to moderat e s oili ng, a few small soft creases. Very Good-/Good+

Born in 1924, he made his Toronto Symphony conducting debut at the age of eighteen. Feldbrill was also the first conductor-in-residence at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music, from 1968 to 1982. However, what really set Feldbrill apart was his limitless enthusiasm and support of Canadian music and young musicians, as well as his insistence on playing the music of Canadian composers despite the reluctance of some orchestral managers and the initial opposition of audiences at the time. In doing so he reached out to young people and trained many to take their places as members of Canadian orchestras from coast to coast." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.
