1 Bacque, James. (Raoul Laporterie.) JUST RAOUL: THE PRIVATE WAR AGAINST THE NAZIS OF RAOUL LAPORTERIE, WHO SAVED OVER 1,600 LIVES IN FRANCE.
Prima, Rocklin, CA, 1992, first edition.
192 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1559581425 Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "In German-occupied France in 1940, only a few people refused to give up the great ideals of their country - liberty, equality, and fraternity. O ne of these was Raoul Laporterie. Starting right after the fall of France, he supplied false documents, money, transport, and shelter to more than 1,600 people. Those rescued were chiefly Sephardic Jews of Bordeaux, but also included a co v e y o f n uns, some French soldiers evading prison camps, and Allied flyers fleeing captivity. He was assisted by his wife, Laure, and his daughter, Irene, his employees in his clothing stores, and all the residents of the village of Bascons, ne ar t h e bo r de r between Occupied and Vichy France, where he was mayor. Risking death daily, Laporterie managed to outmaneuver and fool the Germans repeatedly. A true Christian, he loved others regardless of the consequences. Today, at ag e 9 4, he ha s rec ei ved m a ny honours from the governments of France and Israel. This is his dramatic story." Minor edge wear, minor browning on bottom front edge. Originally published in 1869, 'Rough Notes' is an account of the military career of a man who saw action with the 7th (Royal Fusiliers) at many of the greatest battles and sieges of the Peninsular War, including Talavera, Busaco, Albuera, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Vittoria and the Pyrenee s . . . . a w o n derful book which combines much detail of the day-to-day life of a soldier in Wellington's army, with honest and vivid accounts of the battles in which he took part. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.
3 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

5 Haythornthwaite, Philip J. WELLINGTON'S MILITARY MACHINE.
London Guild Publishing 1989 094677188X / 9780946771882 Book Club Associates. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with maps/battle plans, uniform studies, reproductions. "(D)escribes in detail the composition and evolution of the British Army and its Allied foreign contingents, from the earliest campaigns of the French Revolutionary Wars until the final triumph at Waterloo. All aspects are covered, from the life of the ordinary redcoat to weaponry, tactics, administration, the supporting services at home and the numerous 'foreign corps'; and to the military genius of Wellington himself, all of which are supported by lavish illustrations. An account of all the campaigns undertaken from the first landing in the Netherlands in 1793 to Waterloo show how this army was employed, including not only the famous episodes of the Peninsular War but such little-regarded expeditions as those to South America in 1806, to Denmark, Egypt, the Cape and North America, and in India where Wellington gained his first victories. Full coverage is also accorded the Royal Navy and its invaluable services, not only in combat but in the less-glamorous but no less important duties of blockade and support for the military campaigns: in effect, a complete study of 'the most complete machine'." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one very small corner bump, place and date of purchase written on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing.

BRASSEY'S BOOK OF THE CRUSADES., Miller, David.
6 Miller, David. BRASSEY'S BOOK OF THE CRUSADES.
Washington, D.C. Brassey's 2001 1574882929 / 9781574882926 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
128 pp, 11 1/4" H. "The crusades, of which there were several, conducted by many forcees from different nations, were ultimately unsuccessful, the last crusaders being forced out of the Holy Land in 1291. However, as this fascinating history shows, they did serve to advance many military concepts. Notable among these were the logistics involved in moving thousands of combined forces across frequently hostile regions; fortifications and siege warfare; and armour and weapons. There were heroes and villians, too - again on both sides - and examples of great generalship, military ineptitude, magnamity, and atrocity. The most notable leaders during these conflicts were Richard I, Lionheart, King of England, and the saracen commander, Saladin. While they never met, each had a justifiable respect for the other. This handsome volume encapsulates all the intriguing contrasts between the combatant forces, outlining the formation of the Christian Military Orders - such as the Knights Hospitallers - and the ferocious saracen armies. It describes the major weapons, such as siege machines, as well as personal arms and armour, and the important battles. Liberally illustrated with maps and diagrams, plus contemporary and other illustrations of the people, places and warfare, (this book) is a highly readable military history of a period and events that have an enduring fascination for military enthusiast and general reader alike." Bloomsbury, London, 1991, first edition.
156 pp, small 4to (10 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 074751030X Colour and b&w illustrations. "....provides a historical context for prostitution in the modern Western world, and explores the sexual politics of the oldest profession. ( Philip) calls on testimony from prostitutes, clients and reformers from the last three centuries, in Britain, America and continental Europe, to build a revealing account of this complex and many-sided phenomenon. The emphasis is on the hu m a n s t o r y behind the bare commercial transaction. The author's non-judgemental stance allows us to see prostitutes as they see themselves: as working girls. The text is amplified and illuminated by over sixty illustrations, many in colour, i nc lu d in g wo rk s by artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Picasso, Grosz and Kitaj, and master photographers such as Brassai and E.J. Bellocq. Anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to be a prostitute, or has pondered the qu est ion s o f pow er , c ont ro l , independence and slavery that prostitution raises, should read this book." 144 pp, oblong large 8vo (9 7/8" H x 11 1/4" D). B&w and colour maps. "The maps in this book are reprinted from the collection held at the Public Records office in Kew, London. These superbly crafted charts, which have been accumulated from sources all over Europe over many years, are remarkable documents that until now have been accessible only to researchers. Dating from the earliest days of professional mapmaking they chart over three centuries of European history through cartography. From the earliest representations of the mapmakers art in the 16th century, when the skills required to produce detailed scale maps first developed, to the elegant charts of the 19th century, they show the rise and fall of empires and the development of powerful nations. With an introduction that chronicles European history and detailed captions that explain the historical context of each of the maps, this is a fascinating work that is as insightful as it is attractive."
