79 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H). B&w maps. "This diary is reproduced exactly as written at the time of the events it records in France, with the exception of some omissions and a few minor alterations necessary in the interests of security. Its sole interest rests in the simple sequence of entries that accumulate and combine finally to illustrate the immeasurable complications and infinite reactions of the short campaign in France as jotted down by an independent witness. The diary may, perhaps, help readers grasp even more clearly than they do already from following events in the Press, the accumulation of weight, both political and military, that piled up during the first phase of this universal warfare to handicap the commanders of the British Expeditionary Force and the British Air Forces in France." 8 "A Wanderer". Introduction by Admiral E.M. Eller. (Noah Johnson.) JOURNALS OF TWO CRUISES ABOARD THE AMERICAN PRIVATEER YANKEE.
New York Macmillan 1967 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good-
156 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w reproductions, map. "Written by a young, ardently romantic ship's clerk who signs himself 'A Wanderer' (almost certainly Noah Johnson, these journals) record the heady adventures of the American privateer 'Yankee' on her first two voyages during the War of 1812. Only recently discovered among the possessions of a New England family, they are printed here for the first time. These historic journals bring vividly to life sea voyages that epitomized Yankee daring and skill, dedication to freedom, and Christian charity in dealing with conquered enemies. What life was like aboard a privateer and how these warships were manned, sailed, and deployed against the enemy is nowhere better illustrated than in these superb firsthand accounts." Very light browning on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, scattered small/tiny scuffs, very light soiling, light browning - mainly on spine and flap-folds.

A FACSIMILE EDITION OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT, TOGETHER WITH ITS CODICILS, APPENDED INVENTORIES, LETTERS AND INSTRUCTIONS, PRESERVED IN THE FRENCH NATIONAL ARCHIVES.
New York Paddington 1977 0448221861 / 9780448221861 Very Good -
106 pp, + 6 pages of b&w illustrations, 11" H. " 'France, armee, tete d'armee, Josephine - .' These were the strangely moving, strangely revealing last words spoken by Napoleon Bonaparte as he lay dying on the isle of St. Helena in 1821. Ever since, they have contributed to the popular heroic image of the man who commanded the loyalty of millions, conquered almost the whole of Europe and lost the woman he loved. But his will, reprinted here in facsimile and translated into English for the first time, throws fascinating new light on one of the most enigmatic and extraordinary figures in history. From the detailed lists of his shirts and snuff boxes to the distribution of millions of francs, from his bitter denunciation of the 'English oligarchy and their hired assassin' to his fervent attempts to keep the Napoleonic legend alive through his son, 'The Last Will and Testament' illustrates the contradictions of the Corsican turned Frenchman, the 'petit caporal' turned 'Empereur', the man turned superman and, finally, the man." Interior - light cigarette odour, slight browning in margins of pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light browning to edges of text block, browning to edges of covers.

157 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations, march. "A Regiment forms a corporate body which takes on a life of its own, often rising above the weaknesses and inadequacies of its human fabric to perform seemingly superhuman deeds such as the 'Immortal Stand' of the 24th Foot at Rorke's Drift during the Zulu War...Since their birth as Dering's Regiment in March 1689, the 24th (which in 1881 became the South Wales Borderers) have participated in nearly all the large and small wars of the past 279 years from Cartagena in South America to Narvik in Arctic Norway. From Saratoga, in America's war of Independence, to Tsingtao in the Far East, where they gained a battle honour unique in the British Army. The Ist Battalion, over which the shadow of amalgamation now lies, has recently returned from an operational tour of Aden. There they proved that the courage and steadfastness of the Regiment and of its individual sons is as strong as ever. This book is a fitting tribute to them and to one of the greatest Regiments of all time." The Krozairs were the highest order of chivalry on that turbulent planet, dedicated men, warriors of stern conviction and unflinching hearts. Thus when the Krozairs in their hour of need called on all their far-flung members for aid, he should have come. But he did not. His return had been blocked by the anger of the mysterious Star Lords. 15 Alexander, Bevin. HOW GREAT GENERALS WIN.
New York Avon 1995 0380724367 / 9780380724369 Very Good
320 pp, 7 7/8" H. B&w photographs, maps. "Undaunted by Hannibal's elephants, Scipio Africanus ordered his outnumbered cavlary to charge directly toward the massive beasts - and, by doing so, saved Rome. Stonewall Jackson struck like lightning throughout the Shenandoah Valley, with occasional feints toward Washington - and so frustrated a numerically superior Union Army. Despite few resouces and even less support from the German High Command, The 'Desert Fox', Erwin Rommel, conducted one of the most spectacular and successful campaigns in military history. In wars throughout the centuries, the fortunes of great armies have turned on surprise tactics and audacious maneuvers brilliantly conceived by unconventional officers. In this remarkable work, acclaimed historian Bevin Alexander examines some of the most astonishing campaigns and engagements of all time - providing a uniquely insightful look at the battlefield genius of Napoleon, Sherman, Lawrence of Arabia, MacArthur, and other military strategists who transformed rout into victory time and time again." Interior - minor browning to pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edgewear.

Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

Random House, New York, 2007, first edition.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9781400066414 "Here, in his first collection since his three hilarious classics 'Getting Even', 'Without Feathers', and 'Side Effects', Woody Allen has managed to write a book that not only a nswers the most profound questions of human existence but is also the perfect size to place under any short table leg to prevent wobbling. 'I awoke Friday, and because the universe is expanding it took me longer than usual to find my robe,' h e e x p l ains in a piece on physics called 'Strung Out'. In other flights of inspirational sanity we are introduced to a cast of characters only Allen could imagine: Jasper Nutmeat, Flanders Mealworm, and the independent film mogul E. Coli Big g s, j u st t o na me a few. Whether he is writing about art, sex, food, or crime ('Pugh has been a policeman as far back as he can remember. His father was a notorious bank robber, and the only way Pugh could get to spend time with him was to a pp reh end h im' ), he is explosively funny. In 'This Nib for Hire,' a Hollywood bigwig comes across an author's book in a little country store and describes it in a way that aptly captures this magnificent volume: 'Actually,' the producer says, 'I 'd n ever se en a bo ok rema indered in the kindling section before'." (His life story) is here told in full for the first time, and makes sensational revelations of the career and character of this remarkable, but unknown man. (It) is superimposed on the background of the romance of radio itself, and which clearly shows how, for this man of destiny, the man and his destiny were being developed on parallel lines. Interesting glimpses are given of those who were creating the new science in readiness for the Reith era, and fascinating disclosures are made from inside the B.B.C. itself." Light browning to endpapers, light toning to margins of pages, slight separation between some page gatherings (mostly at photograph pages) but still holding firmly, small label from bookstore on front pastedown, some edge wear to boards, wrinkling and light wear at top/bottom of spine, browning to edges of text block, some very faint liquid marks on boards, spine is a slightly darker green than boards

First established in 1897 in Stoney Creek, Ontario, the WI set out to improve the conditions of life for rural women through the promotion of domestic science education. That mandate soon expanded to include self-improvement, government lobbying, and community betterment. At the same time the organization spread geographically, with branches forming in virtually every rural community in Ontario, then across the country and around the world. Tracing that growth, this history concentrates on the activities of members in their own communities, and explains the enduring popularlity of the Women's Institutes...based on extensive research in provincial records, local Institute sources from across the province, and oral history interviews with dozens of members..."
