New York Barnes & Noble 1993 0880295198 / 9780880295192 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
628 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Here in one volume, is a classic of Western literature - the complete fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. These magnificent tales, which date back to the dawn of storytelling among the people of Northern Europe, was first compiled by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and were published in Germany in 1812 and 1815. Since then, selections from these stories have appeared and reappeared in countless translations throughout the world. It is a rare event, however, to offer 'Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales' in a large, one volume edition, complete, unabridged and unexpurgated. (Over 200 tales, with all the) old favorites - The Sleeping Beauty, Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White and others - and many little-known treasures such as The Juniper Tree, Clever Gretel, King Thrushbeard, and The Singing, Soaring Lark." Small soft wrinkle at bottom edge of page leaf 123/124 with some minor offset on adjacent pages. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling and minor rubbing.

London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2006 0297846892 / 9780297846895 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
383 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, drawings. ""The Battle of the Somme has an enduring legacy, the image of 'lions led by donkeys' established by Alan Clark; of brave British soldiers sent to their deaths by incompetent generals. but, as Duffy reveals in this groundbreaking study, this was never the German view; indeed, the Germans had great respect for the British forces. The evidence for this is both copious and unfamiliar, discovered in archived official papers, histories, memoirs and letters, and most revealingly of all in the results of the interrogation of British prisoners of war. The picture that emerges is a far cry from 'Blackadder'. The questioning by German intelligence officers was more systematic and detailed than that employed by their British counterparts. It was also more open-ended, encouraging those captured to speak freely and at length whilst still in shock from combat and capture. Their recollections are of unique interest because of their immediacy, separated from the event by a matter of hours or a few days at most, rather than being contaminated by the passing of time and outside opinion. This is not another of the number of comprehensive histories of the Battle of the Somme. Instead it looks at aspects of the battle from the German point of view, showing in particular the Germans' perception of the British performance and mentality in the course of that long struggle. From the German point of view, the battle was a disaster. And the fact that every British soldier taken prisoner still believed Britian would win the war gave German intelligence teams a fair indication that their empire would go down to defeat." Minor cigarette odor, very light browning to edges of textblock, faint thumb print at fore-edge of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

STRIKER'S MEN., Rush, Charles W.
7 Rush, Charles W. STRIKER'S MEN.
Coronado, CA O'Meara 1994 0963566113 / 9780963566119 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Signed by Author
294 pp, 9 1/4" H. Red simulated leather binding with gilt lettering on spine. Boldly signed by author on front free endpaper. Double-page map. "Late April, 1942. Without introduction to the task, Lt. (j.g.) Tom Rhett volunteers for submarine duty aboard USS STRIKER as she steers for the Japanese infested waters of the Java Sea. The endless tedium aboard a submarine is quickly shattered by deafening depth-charges that pound the boat and rattle the frazzled nerves of her crew. Helpless, the men sweat silently in the sweltering depths. The seconds tick into agonizing minutes. Without warning, a thunder-ous explosion shudders the boat. Tongues of flame dart through hull fissures quickly resealed by the outer pressure. Submerged, STRIKER silently stalks the enemy. Surfaced, she is a breathing, diesel-belching serpent; often wounded, always deadly. 'Striker's Men' dramatically and compassionately portrays the heroism and fear of men in a submarine war - from STRIKER's daring victories under the steady command of Mike Hanahan to her cowardice in the face of the enemy under the thumb of an incompetent braggart with no heart to endure the terrors of undersea warfare. Through it all, young Tom Rhett ponders his life - the past and present - as he struggles to mold his future." Bump to top of spine/hinges, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is 1/4" shorter in height than the book (manufactured this way - no sign of it being trimmed). It also has a tiny dent on the front panel and minor rubbing on the rear panel.

8 Simpson, William R; Simpson, Florence K.; Samuels, Charles. HOCKSHOP. (THE FABULOUS STORY OF THE "EMPERORS OF PAWNBROKING".)
Random House, New York, 1954, first edition.
311 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "This anecdotal profile tells the story of the fabulous 'Emperors of Pawnbroking' - the William (Hockshop) Simpsons who for five generations maintained the oldest, best-known and most respected pawnshop in the United States. This bizarre family business began in 1822 when the first William Simpson came from England and set up New York's first hockshop. From the era of O. Henry to that of Damon Runyon, the Simpsons did business with gypsies, morticians, gamblers, actors, sportsmen and thousands of others who came to their store to solve unique personal problems. Among the items handled by the Simpsons were the fabulous Hope Diamond, a Stradivarius, a ten-volume History of the Jews, fifteenth-century manuscripts, paintings, a set of Chinese screens, rugs, linens, coins, antiques, watches and a Crusader's giant thumb ring. The people who hocked these varied treasures were famous and infamous, rich and poor, e t h i c a l a nd not so ethical. There are stories here about 'sleepers' - those unexpected bargains that turn up so rarely, and there is an expose of clever frauds and shady tricks used in the past. In addition, the appendix covers techniques an d cu st om s of pa wnbroking and gives five basic rules for hockers, plus a brief history of borrowing and lending through the ages. Here you will learn how to protect yourself, how to tell genuine from fake merchandise, some dependable trade n ame s, an d h ow to de t erm ine value." Very light browning to pages, light browning to fore-edge and bottom of textblock, light soiling on bottom of textblock, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, book slight cocked, a few small faint waterm arks on top of tex tbl ock. Dust jacket has light browning, moderate edge wear/wrinkling/creasing, very small chips at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, one small tear archivally taped, light rubbing. Good/Fair
