LAKONIA., Bond, Geoffrey.
8 Bond, Geoffrey. LAKONIA.
London Oldbourne 1966 First Edition Very Good Very Good
200 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, frontispiece. "During the evening of 19 December 1963 the twin-screw Motor Ship 'Lakonia' slid through the grey waters of the Solent, bound for sunshine and warmer seas. Her hull and superstructure gleamed like 'a newly iced Christmas cake, for she had been recently overhauled and completely redecorated'. (651) passengers were aboard the liner for her Christmas cruise --- The 'Lakonia' began to burn on Sunday, 22 December. Four days later she was a pitiful, smoke-grimed wreck, wallowing at the mercy of the waves. On Sunday, 29 December - just a week after the initial diaster - she slid beneath the waters of the North Atlantic to her last resting-place. (This) is the story of unfortunate, originally minor circumstances, slowly building up until they finally overwhelmed the ship, her crew and passengers. But the pattern of crew and passenger heroism is at least as great as that of any perhaps more dramatic disaster. Reluctant to leave the ship, the crew - and many passengers - tried desperately to overcome events and save her. There was no panic - from first to last. Air-sea-rescue, radio, telephone, and computers went into action to save those in peril on the sea - and it was the first time that the system of A.M.V.E.R. (Atlantic Merchant Vessel Emergency Report), had been used in any major shipping disaster. Ships of all nationalities sped towards the stricken liner. The British freighter 'Montcalm', the Argentine 'Salta', the Pakistani 'Mehi' - and then there was the ship that passed 'Lakonia' by in her hour of need ---. (This) is a graphic account of the strength and bravery of ordinary persons under threat of death. It is an open, objective and factual reconstruction of what happened." Wrinkling at bottom of spine, light browning on top of text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling and a few tiny edge tears, very light rubbing.

DOCTOR IN LOVE., Gordon, Richard.
9 Gordon, Richard. DOCTOR IN LOVE.
Michael Joseph, London, 1957, first edition.
188 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. In this latest installment in the 'Doctor' series, "Gordon soon discovers that a busy practitioner needs a wife as much as a stethoscope. As his other friend, Tony Benskin, observes, 'The patients don 't like you messing about with their wives unless they know you've got one of your own at home'. And of course there has to be someone to answer the telephone, open the door, keep the N.H.S. records, cook the dinner, do the laundry - and pro t e c t h i m from some of his female patients. Dr Gordon's only worry is that the right girl will turn up. She does, but only after an unfortunate love affair which should illustrate to patients the dangers of failling for the same nurse as thei r do ct or . He proposes, is accepted, and soon comes to the conclusion that a couple who can survive the preparations for their wedding can overcome pretty well everything in their married life to come. Despite relatives and real estate, solicit or s a nd sal es m en, bridesmaids and builders, and the doubtful though undoubted assistance of his friends, Dr Gordon finally marries the girl - but only just." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one page with small corner crease, light fin ger pri nt on v ers o of d edication page, previous owner's aname on front pastedown, tiny ink mark on free front end paper, minor bump at board corners light soiling on top of text block. RAF FIGHTER SQUADRONS IN THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN., Robinson, Anthony.
18 Robinson, Anthony. RAF FIGHTER SQUADRONS IN THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
London Brockhampton Press 1999 1860199070 / 9781860199073 Reprint Near Fine Near Fine
287 pp, 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "Squadrons were the basic combat units in RAF Fighter Command; their combat effectiveness was a factor of crucial importance - transcending even the abilities of the brilliant individual pilots within the squadrons and the tactical and strategic skills of the senior commanders who deployed them. That the Battle of Britain was not won by courage alone emerges from the pages of this book, which examines the problems of tactics and leadership encountered by the RAF's fighter force when thrown into a battle for which it was less than adequately prepared. In an opening, wide-ranging chapter, the author considers the general course of the battle and the organization, tactics and equipment with which the RAF went to war. Thereafter he concen-trates on the operations and experiences of eight squadrons heavily engaged in the battle, describing and analysing the events, decisions and circumstances of the daily encounters with German intruders. Meticulously researched from official documents and by consultation with many of the survivors of 'the few', (this book) provides an illuminating new perspective on the greatest air battle of the Second World War." Tiny bump at top of spine.

MAGNUS VOLK OF BRIGHTON., Volk, Conrad.
19 Volk, Conrad. MAGNUS VOLK OF BRIGHTON.
Phillimore, London, (1971), first edition.
240 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "Born in Brighton in 1851, Magnus Volk was a true pioneer of electrical engineering. While still in his early twenties he was employing a dozen or more workpeople, making a simple telegraph set which sold all over the world. In 1879, when he married, his house was the first in Brighton to have electric lighting...It was in 1883 that he built his original little railway in Great Britain. This was the start of a long struggle against both man and nature; but Magnus reacted typically to opposition, and extended the line - twice. Not content with this, he built another railway further east - a truly fantastic conception, nick-named 'Daddy-Long-Legs'. The book tells the extraordinary story of the electric motor-car he made; of the order he received for another like it from the Sultan of Turkey - surely the earliest export order for a car ever to reach this country; and of his visit to Constantinople to deliver it in person. Then there were the telephone exchanges, the electric launches, the submarine mines, the X-Ray equipment...and still the list could be lengthened. Local and family history, topography, Victoriana, engineering archives, the history of motoring and aviation - there is plenty here, in both text and illustration, for all whose interests lie expecially in these fields; while for the general reader there is the story of a whole - written simply and not without humour; a record of endeavour, of dogged tenacity in the face of relentless opposition and ill-fortune. A study, in short, of a very remarkable man." Slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, has very light rubbing, and is price clipped. VG +/VG
