264 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333216148 Includes "a glossary of Naval lower-deck terminology and technical terms" and "a brief account of the fortunes of convoy PQ17". "The year is 1942. A small group of merchant ships escorted by two old destroyers, a corvette and two trawlers are ploughing through Arctic seas to northern Russia in the wake of the ill-fated convoy PQ17. For Ordinary Signalman Ludd - inevitably dubbed 'Lobby' - it is his first trip and li k e l y t o be a tough one. The convoy must run the gauntlet of U-boats, aircraft - there is even the threat that enemy battleships will put to sea; finally there is the other enemy - the bitterest weather, the cruelest seas in the world...Seen f ro m th e p er sp ectives of both wardroom and lower deck, (although a work of fiction, this book) gives an entirely authentic account of the experience of sailors on Arctic convoys during World War II. From the final shore leave in Liverpool to th e a rr iva l at an in hospitable Russian port, through tragedy and much suffering, the men in the cramped messdecks maintain their unflagging humour to the end. Old sailors will relive every minute of these days, and in the characters recognise t hems elv es 3 5 yea rs a go; others will be gripped by a compelling story." BIRTH OF THE BATTLESHIP: BRITISH CAPITAL SHIP DESIGN 1870-1881., Beeler, John.
12 Beeler, John. BIRTH OF THE BATTLESHIP: BRITISH CAPITAL SHIP DESIGN 1870-1881.
Caxton, London, 2003, reprint.
224 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840675349 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings, diagrams, plans. "The 1870s and 1880s have traditionally been seen as the 'Dark Ages' of British warship design, where techn ological conservatism and a lack of any definite design policy produced a confusing mix of ship types, with armament and machinery which were outmoded before the ships were even completed. This new book, however, is a powerful refutation of t h a t v i ew, expanding the scope of its study of the ships of this period beyond the narrowly technological to reveal the full range of strategic, logistical and administrative factors which influenced warship development, arguing that it is her e th at t h e or igins of the modern battleship can be found. The author gives an insight into the difficulties faced by warship designers in an age of rapid technological change, and sets out the valid strategic and technical reasons that lay beh in d s uch se em in gly 'reactionary' policies as the fitting of sails in cruising ironclads, and the Navy's retention of muzzle-loading guns well into the 1880s. Far from having no plan, it is shown that the warship designers of this period had a v ery clea r id ea of the types of ship required to meet the range of roles the Royal Navy was called upon to fulfill in defence of a global empire, and that the problems that the ships of this period had owed more to political, financial and admi nist rati ve pr essur es tha n an y lack of competance on the part of their designers." Dust jacket has some areas of minor edge wrinkling, one tiny tear archivally taped. Fine/Near Fine

THE FIRST GREAT AIR WAR., Bickers, Richard Townshend.
13 Bickers, Richard Townshend. THE FIRST GREAT AIR WAR.
London Hodder & Stoughton 1988 0340263792 / 9780340263792 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
277 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs. "(T)he story of air operations during the First World War, 1914-1918, mainly on the Western Front. It was only eleven years after the Wright Brothers' first flight that the Royal Flying Corps set off for France and every aspect of air-fighting had to be discovered for the first time. Richard Townshend Bickers gives a fresh and challenging view of the men involved, their aircraft and the conditions of war. The pilots and observers of all the combatant nations tended to be young courageous individuals, filled with a love of flying and of adventure. Their aircraft were fragile and unreliable and casualties were appallingly heavy. It was a period of great technical advances when aerial warfare and tactical teamwork were transformed. (The author gives an account of) Lieutenant General Sir David Henderson's leading role in the formation and development of the Royal Flying Corps (and while not neglecting the 'aces', he) also gives due recognition to the less famous pilots, to the usually overlooked air observers and gunners who flew in two-seater fighters, and to the crews who carried out the less glamorous but equally important reconnaissance and bombing sorties." Very light browning to edges of textblock, tiny speck on top of textblock, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top of spine, very minor rubbing.
