1 Schofield, Victoria. KASHMIR IN THE CROSSFIRE.

354 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w maps. "Given the location of the state of Jammu and Kashmir on the borders of China and Central Asia, the isurgency in the valley threatens the stability of a region of great strategic importance, challenging the integrity of the Indian union and creating potentially disastrous tensions between India and Pakistan which may yet escalate into a greater regional conflict. (This book offers a) very readable, carefully documented but highly accessible account of the origins, development and implications of this contentious issue. Beginning with the early history of the independent kingdom of Kashmir, Schofield traces the origins of the modern state in the 19th century, including the controversial 'sale' by the British of a predominantly Muslim Kashmir to a Hindu ruler in 1846. She examines the implications for the people when in 1947 the Maharaja came to choose between joining Muslim Pakistan and secular, yet majority Hindu, India and shows why both neighbouring countries continue to argue over the status of Jammu and Kashmir which, according to recommendations passed by the UN, was to be determined by the will of the people. Drawing upon research in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India, Pakistan, and a range of historical sources, Schofield analyses critically the actions of the key players who, throughout its history, have contributed to the current militarization of the valley. And with the help of numerous interviews she takes into account the hopes and fears of all the interested parties - who are themselves divided, not only by their linguistic and cultural traditions, but also in their objectives." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, remainder mark on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, very light edge wear, several small indentationd on front and rear panels, three small edge tears archivally taped, very light rubbing.

It is a revelation of the Communist Way, the Other Way in this divided world. It is a journey in understanding via not only Leningrad and Moscow, Kiev and such cities of Soviet Asia as Sukhara, Alma-Ata, and - Samarkand, but via the extraordinary essential history, via the Men from Hell - the Tartars, via the Czars of All the Russias (terrible Ivan, giant Peter, Catherine, the idiots), via Karl Marx, Rasputin, the Revolutions, Lenin (the real Lenin), Stalin (his evil documented). It answers Why/How/What is Communism? and What is Russia Really Li ke? The answers are clear, perceptive, disturbing, and without commitment except to the truth about this astonishing society where atheists keep Communist Commandments that point the problem of the Two Moralities, Purtians frown at stretch - p a n t s , h otels are barless, and rich writers carless. The Party Plan for rentless flats and fareless trains gives food for thought. And you are richly entertained when the author takes you to the Kremlin, to people at home, to the ballet a t th e Bo ls ho i, in to Red Square for the feting of the spacemen. And down to the republics of Tajik, Uzbek, Kazakh, in a journey so different and so illuminating." Very light browning to fore-edge of textblock, very faint foxing marks on board s, mi no r w rin kli ng a t t op/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, very light rubbing, a few tiny foxing marks on inside surface. Very Good/Very Good-
