3 THE DIARY OF A STAFF OFFICER (AIR INTELLIGENCE LIAISON OFFICER) AT ADVANCED HEADQUARTERS, NORTH B.A.F.F. 1940.
London Methuen 1941 Sixth Editiion Good- Fair
79 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H). B&w maps. "This diary is reproduced exactly as written at the time of the events it records in France, with the exception of some omissions and a few minor alterations necessary in the interests of security. Its sole interest rests in the simple sequence of entries that accumulate and combine finally to illustrate the immeasurable complications and infinite reactions of the short campaign in France as jotted down by an independent witness. The diary may, perhaps, help readers grasp even more clearly than they do already from following events in the Press, the accumulation of weight, both political and military, that piled up during the first phase of this universal warfare to handicap the commanders of the British Expeditionary Force and the British Air Forces in France." Previous owner's name in ink on front free endpaper; very light browning to pages; browning to endpapers, edges of text block and boards; one page with a dog-ear crease; a few pages with either pen underlining and/or marginalia; one small corner bump; book cocked; light edge wear; slight wrinkling at top/bottom of spine; small area of colour fading due to dampness at bottom of front hinge - a few tiny faded areas elswhere; small bump at bottom of rear hinge. THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Bidwell, Shelford. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
8 Bidwell, Shelford. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1973, first edition.
115 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850521386 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. Music for Regimental Slow March, Trot Past, Gallop Past. "Many people's visual image of the Royal Horse Artillery is probably confined to the dazzling equestrian performances of the King's Troop which annually entrance schoolboys of all ages at the Royal Tournament. How many people pause to wonder why, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, there should be a King's Troop? How many stop to consider why indeed there should have been a separate formation of mounted artillery in the British Army at all? Brigadier Bidwell answers these and most other questions about the Royal Horse Artillery, and as an experienced author, as e d i t o r o f the Royal United Services Institute Journal and an ex-Horse Gunner himself he could hardly be better suited to his task. From their formation in 1793 to the present day the Royal Horse Artillery have had but one objective - to exc e l. Th ey a re in deed a corps d'elite but a corps d'elite whose claim to distinction is based entirely on merit and, as Brigadier Bidwell shows, for nearly two hundred years they have rigidly adhered to their self imposed standard of excellence . He has pa id wor t hy tribute to a body of men whose name will shine forever in the annals of British military history." Very light cigarette odor, very light browning to pages and edges of text block, faint water marks at top/bottom edge of b oa rds - mai nly on rear b oar d. 348 pp, large 8vo (9" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1873544464 B&w photos, maps. "Desert Storm was a war like no other. Fought with weapons of a sophistication beyond anything previously displayed in battle, against a ruthless dictator who se invastion of Kuwait had been universally condemned, it was a conflict waged with an unparalleled sense of international common purpose. Under the fierce glare of world media attention, commanders had to be appointed to manage a highly v o l a t i l e s ituation - with hostages shielding Saddam Hussein's military installations, Iraq's breached trade sanctions needing enforcement, the constant threat of chemical warfare and the Coalition's objectives gradually shifting from defence to o ff en ce .. .( T hi s book) is the fascinating, revelatory chronicle of war from the Allied nerve centre, analysing the American's brilliant execution of the air and the land campaigns. It shows in riveting details how the British commander i nsi ste d o n t ran sfe rri ng hi s ground forces to a more crucial sector of the battlefield and how he persuaded Schwarzkopf to deploy the SAS in the western desert of Iraq. It is also the portrait of an exceptional commander in action..." Smal l fa int stic ker mark on fron t p aste down, wrinkling at top of spine. Music for Regimental Quick March (The Garb of Old Gaul), Bugle Charge, and Regimental Quick March for Pipes & Drums (Highland Laddie). "At Waterlo o they charged the French shouting 'Scotland for ever!' and Sergeant Ewart captured the Eagle of the 45th French Regiment. As Napoleon exclaimed, 'Qu'ils sont terribles, ces chevaux gris', and he spoke from the heart: he was referring to t h e R o y a l Scots Greys. As it was at Waterloo, so it was at Balaclava where the Greys, as part of the Heavy Brigade, went through the Russians like a knife through butter; in South Africa, where they scattered the Boers like grass in the path of a sc yt he . T h e grey horses gave way to tanks in 1941 but the spirit of Sergeant Ewart lived on in the Second World War, and in no 'Grey' more so than Lt.-Col. Geoffrey Keyes, posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his daring raid on R omm el' s He adq uar te rs in North Africa. The story of the Royal Scots Greys - whether they are charging French, Russians or Germans as cavalry, or fighting in North Africa, Italy or North-West Europe in tanks - will stir the blood of every man who has e ver sold iere d a nd man y civilians besides." THE 10th ROYAL HUSSARS (PRINCE OF WALES'S OWN). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Brander, Michael. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
11 Brander, Michael. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE 10th ROYAL HUSSARS (PRINCE OF WALES'S OWN). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1969, first edition.
137 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Brigadier Humphrey Gore, who raised the 10th Dragoons in 1715, and General Sir David Dawney, Colonel in 1969, each had a son in the regiment, as also did many of t he Colonels between them, including King Edward VII, for such close family relationships at all levels were a feature in the Tenth, with the same names appearing generation after generation. Hence in a very intimate way the regiment has al w a y s b e e n 'Proud of Their Man'. The Tenth has also always been notable for the Cavalry Spirit, that elusive quality, which has nothing to do with horses, implying light-hearted dash and daring, pride in discipline combined with independence o f mi nd an d ju dg ement, the ability to assess odds quickly and take instant and correct decisions, enduring courage and leadership. It was noticeable before Warburg in 1760 in Major Davenport's letters. It was there before they became the Pr inc e of Wal e s's O wn Hus sars and the smartest regiment in the British Army. It was there at Waterloo, when they led the decisive charge of the day, and right down through the years and the campaigns it has always been evident. Whether in intr oduc in g p olo to Eng lan d, or d eveloping new tactics in battle, the Tenth was always in the lead. In the Boer War, when they exchanged gay uniforms for khaki, in the 14-18 War, when they fought amost entirely dismounted, in the 39-45 War, when they ha d co nver ted to t anks , a nd th rough every change of role since, these qualities remained unaltered, epitomised in the regimental saying 'Once a Tenth Hussar, always a Tenth Hussar', and in their pride as 'The Shiners', outshining all others ." THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM BOOK OF 1918, YEAR OF VICTORY. PAN GRAND STRATEGY SERIES., Brown, Malcolm.
14 Brown, Malcolm. THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM BOOK OF 1918, YEAR OF VICTORY. PAN GRAND STRATEGY SERIES.
London Pan 1999 0330376721 / 9780330376723 Second Printing Very Good+
392 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w plates. "1918 was probably the most dramatic and decisive year in British military history. In the spring there was a fear that Britain might have to evacuate her troops from the continent and lose the war. In the summer came the great turnaround, and by autumn the German armies began to retreat. In November 1918 the First World War was over. This book tells the story of an amazing year through the authentic voice of the British soldier, a year in which, remarkably, the casualty rates were even higher than those of 1916 and 1917, the years of the Somme and Passchendaele." 15 Brown, Malcolm. THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM BOOK OF THE SOMME.
London Pan 1997 0330352202 / 9780330352208 Good-
380 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w plates, maps. "This book offers a remarkably fresh perspective on the bitterly fought 1916 campaign; it also describes the later battles of the Somme in the Great War's final year, 1918. Using hitherto unpublished evidence from the archives of the Imperial War Museum, it tells its powerful and dramatic story through the letters and diaries of those who were there. (The author) has woven the many and varied accounts of well over a hundred participants - mainly British, but with not few Germans - into a rich tapestry of experience, so that the book reads less like a conventional history and more like a war novel. The characters come from almost every rank, from general to ordinary soldier, from a captain who could write, 'It's a marvellous war', or 'Hardship be damned! It's all one long blaze of glory', to a private whose attitude was, 'There is not much glory these days in dying for your country'." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - book lightly cocked, two small corner creases, multiple creases on spine, very light edge wear, small area of surface paper loss on rear cover due to label removal, a few tiny scuffs on rear cover.
