6 Webster, Donald Blake. Foreword by Charles F. Hummel. ENGLISH-CANADIAN FURNITURE OF THE GEORGIAN PERIOD.
McGraw-Hill Ryerson, Toronto, 1979, first edition.
232 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070829802 Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, b&w drawings. "This handsome, extensively researched book shows that the heritage of fine craftsmanship in English-Canadian furniture extends back almost to the earliest periods of settlement. Donald Webster focuses on the styles and craftsmanship of English-Canadian furniture up to about 1830. The stylistic influences, as might be expected, were British and A m e r i c a n , but the materials used and the degree of ornamentation reflected local conditions. Canada at that time was a thinly populated series of colonies where people were still coping with the problems of taming the land and surviving th e wi nt er s. Th er e were few centres of affluence where people aspired to the finer things in life. Nonetheless there have come down to us examples of fine furniture clearly Canadian in origin and displaying the craftsmanship of skilled cabinet- ma ker s r ath er t han th e rough simplicity of pioneer furniture. Many pieces are outstanding for their handsome proportions and simple but elegant ornamentation. This is a book for all those who love fine furniture. Not only does (the author) sh ow a nd d escr ibe m ore than 3 00 excellent examples of Canadian Georgian furniture, but he also explores in detail the stylistic influences and the materials used, and explains some of the procedures used in identifying and dating early Cana dian furn iture ." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, light rubbing with some color los s, on e smal l clos ed tea r and one tiny close d te ar, minor soiling. Very Good/Good+
