75 pp, 81/8" H. B&w illustrations. "Here are exciting tales of Norway's giants and dwarfs, of the kind little nisse, the ugly troll, the horrible draug, the invisible huldre folke. From the beautiful Norseland's dim past and from recent adventures there, (the author) has collected an enchanting group of 'tall tales' to delight America's boys and girls. (She) has visited the old haunts of Norway's legendary 'little people'. She has seen the mysterious stone carvings and other actual physical evidence of strange, unexplained events of long ago in the land of the Norsemen. Some of these stories Mrs. Christianson heard as a child as she sat by her grandmother, who related the old tales to the accompaniement of her spinning wheel. Some she heard directly from the lips of present-day Norwegian farmers and fishermen." Minor edge wear, slight bump at bottom of rear hinge. Some have collected examples of the state's unique speech patterns and word usages. Others have recorded local place names and the legends that surround them, or the yarns and tall tales transmitted from one generation to the next. Musicians have sought the authentic mountain folksongs, both old and new, and gifted writers have woven details of their Kentucky upbringing into poems, novels, and stories. Here is described the work of these enthusiastic students." Part One, on the other hand, is an attempt to look at the aircraft from a different angle, not so much the fighter pilot's glamorous view but the day-to-day operations, trials and tribulations and the joys and delights of a ground crew struggling to come to terms with an aircraft that was, in many ways, a quantum leap in technology. 225 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H). "Eric Davidson's second chapter in the age of Schweik - the era when the ordinary squaddie could, through a bit of earthy judgement and a lot of divine luck, bungle his way through World War II - safe in the knowledge that the enemy would have it own ration of Schweiks, similar common men like himself caught up in forces beyond their making or control. Men for whom war 'like life, was all make-do and mend, try all and error'. 'V for Schweik' celebrates the role of these Schweik-successors in a splendid new selection of tales. Covering the period from D-Day to VE Day, involving the valorous activities of men like Magna Carter, Heavy Wates and Huckleberry Flynn, these ten stories salute the spirit of the legendary Good Soldier with great energy and humour; tales often taller than tall, but always honouring the essential Schweikness of their heroes." Interior - tiny pen correction to typo in foreward, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - tiny soft corner crease.

9 Fraser, George MacDonald. FLASHMAN AND THE REDSKINS. FROM THE FLASHMAN PAPERS, 1849-50 AND 1875-76.
London Collins 1982 0002226618 / 9780002226615 First Edition Very Good Very Good Barbosa dust jacket art.
479 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Map endpapers. "When the tide of battle surged over the slopes of Little Bighorn, and Sitting Bull's braves gathered for the final charge that would sweep away the gallant remnant of Custer's 7th Cavalry, a clarion voice was heard above the crash of shots and whistle of arrows, the war-whoops and the pounding hooves: - Readers of his previous adventures will not fail to identify the speaker, or to recognise the tall, distinguished figure in evening dress, tails and whiskers, fleeing the stricken field: Sir Harry Flashman, V.C., veteran of countless retreats from battle and bedchamber, the most decorated coward of the Victorian age, was meeting his fate with the same matchless poltroonery and deafness to duty and decency which had sustained him through a lifetime of dishonourable service, and endeared him to a generation of readers. But how the arch-cad of Dr Arnold's Rugby found himself in the climactic struggle of the American West is only one chapter in an odyssey as hair-raising and scandalous as any in his six earlier volumes of memoirs. He traces it with his usual shameless candour and caustic humour, from the wagon-trains of the Forty-Niners, when he foug ht his terrified way across the Plains in command of a bordello on wheels, to the holocaust of Bent's Fort and the horrors of scalp-hunting raids, Apache warpaths, dinner parties with Custer, captivity among the Sioux, confrontations with President Grant and Wild Bill Hickock, duels, escapes, conspiracies, and shoot-outs - to say nothing of passionate encounters with Indian belles, dusky beauties, enthusiastic widows, and mysterious adventuresses. This is Flashy's West as only he can describe it - the West, at once legendary and authentic, of Mangas Colorado and Kit Carson, of Custer and Spotted Tail, of Crazy Horse and the Deadwood stage, a pageant of savage warriors and Mountain Men, glory-hunting soldiers and gunfighters, gamblers, eccentrics, scoundrels, and those extraordinary folk, white and Indian, who broke the trails or resisted the invasion." Slight ridge down centre of spine, some light toning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light browning on spine, flap-folds and top part of panels; minor edge wrinkling.

413 pp, 9" H. Map endpapers and decorated title page by Stephen Johnson and Raymond Benson. "They were a desperate crew: Bilbo, the buccaneer swordsman in Raffish Finery and ill-fitting boots; Black Sheba, the gorgeous deadly Queen o' the Coast Brotherhood, with her diamante rapier and Gucci accessories; Firebeard, the roaring monster of the blazing whiskers; Happy Dan Pew, eccentric French filibuster (alias Trevor O'Grady) - to say nothing of the redoubtable Calico Jack, Goliath the wooden-legged dwarf, voluptuous Anne Bonney, Akbar the Damned o' the Barbary Coast, and shiploads of cutlass-waving extras. You don't believe it? But then you've probably never heard of the amazing quest of the fabulous Madagascar Crown, undertaken by the dashing Captain Long Ben Avery, the greatest super-hero of all time, or his fraught courtship of the Admiral's lovely daughter, Lady Vanity (and her fearful perils at the hands of Pitiless Captors), or of the rascally handsome rakehell Colonel Blood, or the fiendish Don Lardo Baluna, or the rhumba-smitten Princess of the Sun in her lost jungle city, or Solomon Shafto the castaway landscape gardener or sweet star-crossed Donnal Meliflua, or - in fact, you know very little about Romantick Historie at all. Fortunately, 'The Pyrates' can set things right. For 'tis all here, look 'ee, just as you always hoped it might be - tall ships and desert islands, impossibly gallant adventurers and rakish villains, lovely ladies in distress and plunging necklines, buried treasure and Black Spots, devilish Dons and ghastly dungeons, plots, duels, escapes, savage rituals, tender romance and steaming passion - all to the accompaniement of ringing steel - ." Light toning to pages and endpapers, light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top of spine, top of front flap and fold, bottom of rear flap; minor rubbing, small line indentation on front panel.

648 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). Inscribed by author on half-title page: To ....., thanks for your service and very best wishes, Arthur Herman. Maps. "This is the story of how the British Navy came to dominate and shape modern history. It is the story of an institution built around a tradition of heroism, in which courage in battle and bravery in death were a byword, from Nelson's death at Trafalgar to Commander Robert Scott's death in the icy wastes of Antarctica. It is also the story of a military force very different from any other, with a cast of individual personalities and intellectual eminences, from Sir Francis Drake and Captain James Cook to Charles Darwin and Sir Winston Churchill. But above all, the Royal Navy is part of the story of how one nation rose to global dominance without precedent in history and without equal, even today. The Royal Navy enabled Great Britain to build an empire on which the sun literally did not set, encompassing one-fifth of the world's population. But it also facilitated trade and communication with every other part of the planet. Thanks to its navy, the British Empire became the first truly global community, bound together by law, language, and commerce - and by the 'hearts of oak' of British ships and sailors....This is an epic journey from the age of the Reformation to the age of computer warfare and special ops: a tale of tall ships and battleships and great battles at sea; of heroic sailors, admirals, and aviators, of violent conflict and personal tragedy." Very small dint at top edge of rear cover, tiny mark on top of textblock, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 256 pp, 8vo (8" H). Greenhill Books' Vintage Crime Classics series. "Near six foot tall, lithe and powerful, November Joe is a Canadian woodsman who would sooner hunt deer than man any day. In these stories of detection, set in the wilderness far away from city streets, November Joe shows that he is not only the product but also the master of his environment. The author was a sportsman and naturalist who spent much of his life travelling and hunting, and used his own experiences and wilderness lore as background for this book. First published before the outbreak of World War One (during which Prichard organized a corps of sharp-shooters), these stories capture the clear, crisp outdoor atmosphere of the North-American backwoods. 'November Joe' is recommended in 'Queen's Quorum' as one of the 106 most important detective-crime story books published." Contents: Preface; Sir Andrew's Advice; November Joe; The Crime at Big Tree Portage; The Seven Lumber-Jacks; The Black Fox Skin; The Murder at the Duck Club; The Case of Miss Virginia Planx; The Hundred Thousand Dollar Robbery; The Looted Island; The Mystery of Fletcher Buckman; Linda Petersham; Kalmacks; The Men of the Mountains; The Man in the Black Hat; The Capture; The City or the Woods? "(A)n absorbing look at life aboard the sailing vessels which plied the North Atlantic during the French colonial era in North America. Focusing on the first half of the eighteenth century and the Seven Years' War period, this book analyses four major aspects of the crossing: maritime traffic and the outfit of vessels; the Atlantic course and navigation; the people and their occupations; and life aboard the ship. Together they present a fascinating view of sea life. Gilles Proulx has used official correspondence between the Minister of Marine and the Canadian colonial authorities, and the papers siezed on boarded vessels, as well as over one hundred log-books and personal diaries, to obtain a wealth of detail about the rigours of the colonial shipboard experience." 96 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with wonderful b&w drawings. "Shipwrecked near the kingdom of Lilliput, Lemuel Gulliver awakens to find himself surrounded by hundreds of tiny people, none more than six inches tall. The Lilliputians take the 'man-mountain' prisoner, and Gulliver learns to live in their miniature world, where he can eat three loaves of bread in a mouthful and children can play hide and seek in his hair! Eventually Gulliver escapes from Lilliput and returns home. But soon he longs for further adventure and so sets sail once again. On this journey, Gulliver finds himself in Brobdingnag - a country of giants, where this time he is a pocket-sized oddity, small enough to use a handkerchief as a blanket. Jonathan Swift's classic story is a perennial favorite with children everywhere. This handsome edition, lavishly illustrated with David Small's lively, richly detailed drawings, makes the story accessible to the youngest fan of fantasy and adventure." Portland, Oregon Binfords and Mort 1941 First Edition Good Fair Norma Madge Lyon & Harold L. Price.

No number is inserted. Pictorial map endpapers, color illustrations throughout. "Paul Bunyan is America's very own folk character. He did not spring from the legends of our English ancestors, nor from the Indian myths, but like America herself - of which he is a symbol - he just grew. Paul, like our countrymen, started on the East coast - in the Maine woods to be exact. As the nation grew, so did Paul and Babe, his faithful Blue Ox. Their first westward move was to the land of Hiawatha and the Great Lakes. Paul in his enthusiasm thought the great White Pine forests of Michigan and Wisconsin would last forever; but alas, they were soon exhausted, due to fire and wasteful exploitation. More careful this time, but still filled with a mighty urge for Logging - Paul went south into the Long Pine country. He even made the Mississippi his own private waterway, but again he and Babe got the wanderlust. This time they headed for the great Douglas Fir forest of the Pacific Northwest. Like the nation of which he is the symbol, Paul found this last western frontier a satisfying and soul stirring challenge. Here he and Babe could do more than Logging. Here were canals to dig, Bridges to construct, Dams to erect, Mountains and Glaciers to conquer. At last, 'Paul Bunyan the Work Giant' - like America, has come of age." Very small area of ink offset at top corner of free front endpaper (from dust jacket flap), book is slightly cracked at a few places, book is lightly cocked, bump at bottom corner of boards, light edge wear, one page leaf has small finger print smudges at top & bottom corners. 319 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0907117465 "Rachael Ann Bowen was born into the comfortable world of the Edwardian middle classes, but soon her father's illness and death left the family struggling to avoid the workhouse. In the following years the Bowens shared in full the poverty and tragedy of the Valleys, surviving only by their faith and humour; until Rachael was swept off her feet by the tall, dark and handsome Ivor Webb and settled down to married life in Mae steg. But this was only the beginning. Soon the young couple decided to emigrate to Australia - only to find that the advertised land of milk and honey was even more merciless than the Depression in Wales that they had left. Yet unemploy m e n t , w i l d animals, hostile natives and the constant fight against the unrelenting harshness of the country were only new challenges to be faced. (This) is not only story of remarkable courage, faith and independence; it is also a portrait ga ll er y of al mo st Dickensian richness. We meet Rachael's own family, of course, but also the eccentric revolutionary Dr. William Price of Llantrisant; Matron Phillips and Sister Silverside, the two English nurses who wanted to adopt her; the cu rio us in hab i tan ts of the seedy London boarding house where she almost fell a victim to White Slavers; and even the young Stanley Baker at his first audition." 284 pp, + (4 pp), small 8vo (7 3/8" H), orange cloth with black lettering on spine. "In the heart of London's clubland there stands a tall and grimly forbidding edifice known to taxi-drivers and the elegant young men who frequent its precincts as the Drones Club. Yet its somewhat austere exterior belies the atmosphere of cheerful optimism and bonhomie that prevails within. For here it is that young gallants of Mayfair forgather for the pre-luncheon bracer and to touch lightly on the topics of the day. But all is not idle chatter that passes at this hour of the morning snifter - life in its sterner aspects often comes under review and is discussed with a candour that loosens tongues and encourages confidences. Then it is that the Eggs and Beans cluster round, and, with bated breath, listen while a Crumpet holds the floor with a dramatic narrative of domestic disturbances in the life of Bingo Little or, perhaps, the heart-throb story of Freddie Fitch-Fitch at Droitgate Spa. To the members of the Drones such epics are history in the making; and to us, because our ribs ache from joyous laughter, they are no less significant."
