15 volumes from Robert Adams' "Horseclans" series - an incomplete set (volumes 1-8, 10-13, 15-17). The original series consisted of 18 volumes (plus two short story anthologies by various authors). ***Please note: this grouping does not include volumes 9, 14 & 18 - "The Witch Goddess", "A Man Called Milo Morai" and "Clan of the Cats"*** 1. The Coming of the Horseclans - 199 pp, 1982 6th printing. "After two hundred years of searching for other immortals, the Undying High Lord Milo Morai has returned to the Horseclans to fulfill an ancient prophecy and lead them to their destined homeland by the sea. But in their path wait the armed might of the Ehleenee and an enemy even more treacherous - the Witchmen - pre-Holocaust scientists who have survived the centuries by stealing other men's bodies to house their evil minds and who have in their hidden stronghold the means of destroying all who will not beome their willing slaves." 2. Swords of the Horseclans - 180 pp, 1981 8th printing. "For seven hundred years, the Undying High Lord Milo has been building his Confederation, leading the Horseclans slowly across the lands once known as the United States, absorbing city-states and nomadic tribes alike, some by peaceful means, some by the sword. But now his enemies have banded together into an army far larger than Milo can muster. Led by an ancient and evil intelligence, this wave of unstoppable destruction is thundering swiftly down upon the Confederation forces." 3. Revenge of the Horseclans - 181 pp, 1982 4th printing. "The Thoheeks of Morguhn is dying, and his eldest son Bili has been summoned home to claim his inheritance after years of soldiering in the Middle Kingdoms. Yet Bili's reign could end before it begins. For the old Ehleen nobility and the priests of the ancient religion are planting the seeds of rebellion, swearing to wrest back from Bili and his fellow Horseclansmen the lands and wealth that once was theirs." 4. A Cat of Silvery Hue - 166 pp, 1979 8th printing. "Led by Lord Milo the Undying One, a twentieth-century mutant gifted with immortality, the men of the Horseclans are slowly reuniting the continent through the strength of their swords and their very special mental talents. Yet the Ehleenee, too, have dreams of power - dreams that have led them into a full-scale religious war of conquest. To overcome these fanatical marauders, Lord Milo must call upon his very best (to) save civilization from destruction." 5. The Savage Mountains - 164 pp, 1980 5th printing. "Before the Confederation forces lie the Armehnee Mountains, the home of savage tribes that constantly raid the lowlands, bringing with them destruction and death. But Milo's forces are about to face an even more dangerous enemy. For the Witchmen have long been at work in the mountains. And unbeknownst to Milo, his troops are marching into much more trouble than they bargained for - trouble that could spell the end of the Confederation!" 6. The Patrimony - 184 pp, 1980 4th printing. "Long live the Thoheeks! But who will this new leader of Sanderz-Vawn be? For although young Horseclansman Tim Sanderz, exiled long years ago, has come to reclaim his rightful inheritance, his stepmother wants to see her own Ehleen son as ruler in Vawn. And before Tim's half-brother Bili of Morguhn and the Undying High Lord Milo can send troops to his aid, Tim's Hall has become an armed camp where Ehleen battles Horseclansman with cunning, treachery, and sword-swinging might." 7. Horseclans Odyssey - 241 pp, 1981 2nd printing. "(The Horseclansmen) must rescue several of their children from kidnappers and teach their enemies the price of harming any people of the clans. But the path to both vengeance and their long-lost home will lead them down a treacherous road and straight into a sword-swinging battle with two powerful armies - a war in which there can be only one victor left alive." 8. The Death of a Legend - 185 pp, 1981 2nd printing. "When the Witchmen caused the earth to move and called forth the fires from the mountain's inner depths, the Moon Maidens, Ahrmehnee, and Thoheeks Bili's troops barely escaped with their lives. Driven by the flames into territory said to be peopled by monstrous half-humans, Bili was forced to choose between having the dangers of nature gone mad or fighting the savage natives on their own ground. But before he could decide, his troops were spotted by the beings who claimed this eerie land as their own and would use powereful spells of magic and illusion to send any intruders to their doom." 10. Bili the Axe - 185 pp, 1983 2nd printing. "With the help of powerful inhuman allies, Prince Byruhn has persuaded Bili and his warriors to delay their return to Confederation lands and join in his campaign against the deadly invading army that threatens to destroy New Kuhmbuhluhn. But even as Bili and his warriors rally to the Kuhmbuhluhners' aid, the forces of the Witchmen are on the move again." 11. Champion of the Last Battle - 201 pp, 1983 2nd printing. "The day of prophecy has come at last - the time for Bili and Prince Byruhn to rally their troops for the final defense of New Kuhmbuhluhn. But even as the people of the kingdom flock into their great stone city and Bili's warriors take up their posts on the walls, the Skohshuns are building new weapons of destruction to storm the fortress. And within the very castle grounds stalks a creature of nightmare, striking down the defenders one by one in a reign of bloody terror that may prove far more deadly thatn the enemy at their gates." 12. A Woman of the Horseclans - 197 pp, 1983 4th printing. "Shunned by her own folk as a creature of Evil, Bettylou Hanson found an instant welcome among the people of the Horseclans. Young, healthy, intelligent, and gifted with powerful mindspeak potential, she was everything Milo Morai's people looked for in a clan member. But even Milo himself couldn't have foreseen the powerful role Bettylou was to play in the future of the Krooguh clan. For the frightened girl who Tim Krooguh had rescued from certain death was destined to become a living legend among the Kindred, a fighter whose courage would rouse the clans against a foul and dangerous foe." 13. Horses of the North - 253 pp, 1985 1st printing. "Within time, some of (the Horseclan's) laws changed or were forgotten but there remained one that must never be broken - 'Kindred must not fight Kindred!' Yet now, clans Linsee and Skaht were on the brink of a bloodfeud that could spread like prairie fire throughout the Horseclans. Could even Milo smother the sparks of hatred before they blazed up to destroy all of the Horseclans?" 15. The Memories of Milo Morai - 221 pp, 1986 1st printing. "Milo Morai now journeyed with a select band to explore unknown territory. Perhaps days or weeks ahead, Milo would discover an untouched ruin of the Old Ones, a veritable treasure-trove of rare metals and trade goods to enrich the Horseclans. More than dead ruins awaited Milo and his valiant band of hunters. For on the trail they now rode lurked nightmare creatures hungering for the blood of man. And at the end of the road waited heirs to a legacy of violence which might claim the men and women of the Horseclans as the final victims in a war that should have ended hundreds of years ago." 16. Trumpets of War - 223 pp, 1987 2nd printing. "The High King Zastros and his evil witch queen had finally met their match when they'd challenged Milo Morai and his Confederation Army to battle. Yet with the menace of Zastros destroyed, the Confederation faced a still greater challenge - for in his mad campaign, Zastros had drained the very lifeblood from his kingdom of Southern Ehleenoee. Only chaos now reigned there, as bandits, killers, and bands of renegade warriors roved the land. Milo had pledged to bring peace back to this devastated realm. But could his former enemies, now become allies, be trusted to live by Confederation law in their troubled lands? Or did traitors wait to betray Milo's warriors to a terrible doom?" 17. Madman's Army - 222 pp, 1987 2nd printing. "Sending some of his most trusted agents before him, backed by those doughty warriors, the Horseclansmen, Milo hoped to see the decimated kingdom (of Zastros) rapidly reorganized into a thriving realm. But neither he nor any of his allies had bargained for the evil hidden within the very heart of the land's new government - an evil fueled by Milo's most ancient and hated enemies, an evil that might well destroy all of Southern Ehleenohee and become a dread weapon against the Confederation itself!" Thus when the Krozairs in their hour of need called on all their far-flung members for aid, he should have come. But he did not. His return had been blocked by the anger of the mysterious Star Lords. THE STORY OF THE ROYAL TOURNAMENT., Binns, P.L., Lieutenant-Colonel.
8 Binns, P.L., Lieutenant-Colonel. THE STORY OF THE ROYAL TOURNAMENT.
Gale & Polden, Aldershot, 1952, Ist edition.
156 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Results of 1952 Royal Tournament laid-in. B&w photos, reproductions. "Fifty-three Tournaments have passed since the first 'Grand Assault-at-Arms' at Islington for the benefit of the volunteers of London and any Regular troops stationed 'within convenient range'. In 1883 the declared object was simply the promotion of skill-at-arms, but gradually the charitable side asserted itself until both aspects were recognized as being of equal importance. Both objects have been successfully achieved. This story tells of those early days when the sword, lance and bayonet were the main weapons of the Queen's soldiers, and describes the means by which the Tournament encouraged their skilful use. It traces the gradual decline of these weapons from the appearance of the early Maxim and Gatling guns which were diplayed in mimic warfare in the presence of enthusiastic audiences at Islington. In addition to showing development in arms and warfare, the Tournament has year by year demonstrated the progress made in the art of training the Service man in his profession..." Dust jacket is price clipped, has small chips and tears with creases, light edge wear/wrinkling, light to moderate rubbing/soiling on rear panel. VG -/G-

ARMS & ARMOUR OF THE SAMURAI. (ARMOR.), Bottomley, I. and Hopson, A.P.
9 Bottomley, I. and Hopson, A.P. ARMS & ARMOUR OF THE SAMURAI. (ARMOR.)
Bison, London, 1988, first edition.
192 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 086124415X Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "A member of the aristocracy, from the tenth century the Samurai was primarily a mounted archer . This is reflected in the light, lamellar yoroi armour which left the right arm free for drawing his bow. Helmets were simple, with leather neckpieces. Battle began with an exchange of arrows, and was followed by a series of hand-to-han d c o m b a t s among champions who relied on the sword. The long wars of Kusonoki and Ashikaga produced several changes in the nature of warfare. Fighting in wooded, mountainous countryside, hand-to-hand combat came into its own. The bulky yor oi wa s su pe rc ed ed by the lighter, less constricting do maru and the no dachi, a longer version of the naginata (glaive), was introduced. The renowned Samurai cult of the sword began in this period. The Samurai's most ornate and elaborate ar mou r da te s f rom th e T oku gawa era, and was probably not intended for use in actual battle. The long development of arms and armour in the Samurai's 700-year history is fully detailed in this handsome volume. Illustrated with over 300 photo grap hs , (i t) will be a we lcom e ad dition to the libraries of all military enthusiasts." The first seven books of the Vlad Taltos Series, plus volume nine (8 books in total), 6 7/8" H. **Please note, volume 8 - Dragon - is not included in this grouping.** 1. Jhereg - 239 pp, Ace 1983 16th printing, ISBN 0441385540. "There are many ways for a young man with quick wits and a quick sword to advance in the world. Vlad Taltos chose the route of the assassin. To his other qualifications he added two things: The first was a smattering of witchcraft - badly thought of on Dragaera, but only a fool refuses such a weapon. The second was his constant companion, a young jhereg, its leathery wings and poisonous teeth always at Vlad's command, its alien mind psionically linked with his own. Vlad has never regretted the sorcerous bargain he made with his jhereg's mother: 'I offer your egg long life and fresh, red meat without struggle, and I offer it my friendship. I ask for aid in my endeavors. I ask for its wisdom, and I ask for its friendship'." 2. Yendi - 209 pp, Ace 1984 1st printing, ISBN 0441944566. "Back when I bargained for the wise-mouthed reptilian who sits perched on my shoulder, his mother wished me: 'Long life and good hunting'. I told her I was not a hunter. She said: 'You will be - .' She was right. My name is Vlad Taltos. I am an assassin. And this is the story of my early days in the House of Jhereg, of how I found myself in a Jhereg war, and how I fell in love with the woman who killed me." 3. Teckla - 214 pp, Ace 1987 Ist printing, ISBN 0441799779. "I'd always known they were. Teckla were lazy, stupid, cowardly peasants. Revolting. Old joke. But now they were revolting against the Empire. New joke. And a Jhereg crimelord, feeling the pinch, was popping the rebels. No joke. But the real joke? I was protecting them. Me. Lord Vlad Taltos - loyal grandson, loving husband. Jhereg. Sorcerer. Assassin. Everything the rabble hated. Not that I craved wet-nursing a mob of slogan-slobbering, doomed radical loonies, all of whom wanted me dead. Particularly since my royal peers, all of House Jhereg, also wanted me dead." 4. Taltos - 181 pp, Ace 1988 1st printing, ISBN 0441182003. "Journey to the Land of the Dead. All Expenses Paid! Not my idea of an ideal vacation, but this was work. After all, even an assassin has to earn a living. The trouble is, everyone knows that a living human cannot walk the Paths of the Dead, and return, alive, to the land of men. But being an Eastener is not exactly like being human, by Dragaeran standards anyways. Thus, the rule doesn't apply to me - I hope." 5. Phoenix - 245 pp, Ace 1990 1st printing, ISBN 0441662250. "In Gods we trust. All other pay cash. Always a good rule if you're in my line of work, but who'd think a god would take me up on it? There I was, facing certain death, when the Demon Goddess answered my prayers for rescue. Strange she should take an interest in me, considering I'm an assassin. Stranger that the Demon Goddess needs to offer me work. Well, my patron deity wants a favor, and who is Vlad Taltos to say no." 6. Athyra - 243 pp, Ace 1993 1st printing, ISBN 0441033423. "The Magnificent Seven - ? A bit of an overstatement. Minus six, actually. Which leaves one. Me - Vlad Taltos, sorcerer (sometime witch) and (ex-)assassin. Plus my two faithful jhereg. Which makes three, sort of. But even we can have a hard time when we take on the biggest hitters of the House of Jhereg. Here I thought I could retire in peace - ." 7. Orca - 290 pp, Ace 1996 1st printing, ISBN 0441001963. "Granted, walking around with two jhereg on your shoulders is not the best disguise for an ex-assassin wanted all over the Empire. But a young boy saved my life and now he needs my help. And Vlad Taltos always pays his debts. Even if it means uncovering a financial scandal big enough to bring down the House of Orca - and, if I'm lucky, the entire Empire." 9. Issola - 255 pp, TOR 2002 1st printing, ISBN 0812589173. "Okay, so maybe I've been living in the woods too long, where you can't even get a decent cup of klava first thing in the morning. So who should turn up but Lady Teldra, the courtly servant of my old friend the Dragonlord Morrolan? Teldra wants my help, because Morrolan and Aliera have disappeared, and according to Sethra Lavode, it looks like they may be in the hand of the Jenoine. Do I want to mess with them? The guys who made this place? And I thought I had problems before - . Oh, well, what's a little cosmic battle with beings who control time and space?" STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS., Crowlesmith, J., Rev.
18 Crowlesmith, J., Rev. STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS.
London Aldine Hard Cover Good Fair H.S. Greig.
172 pp, 7 1/2" H. Red boards with black lettering/illustration on spine and front board. Colour frontispiece, b&w illustrations. No date, but Xmas greetings on free front endpaper dated 1936. "The stories that follow are taken from Sir Thomas Malory's 'Morte D'Arthur', the great collection of romances about King Arthur which was written in the fifteenth century, and printed first of all by Caxton. Scholars say that Arthur was a British hero, one of the leaders of the Britons against the English invaders in the sixth century. In course of time legends centred round his name in the memory of the defeated race. To the original stories the Middle Ages added others, some of which belonged to later heroes, and, finally, these were combined with various legends of the Christian Church about the finding of the Holy Grail, the cup from which Christ is said to have drunk at the Last Supper with His disciples. Thus we get the beautiful cycle of romances which shines in the pages of Malory's great book. This version has been written for younger children. As far as possible the old-world style of Malory's narrative has been preserved, while the stories chosen are those which seem to present a message to youth." The four volumes of the "A Handful of Men" quartet - 6 7/8" H. 1. The Cutting Edge - 307 pp, 1993 first printing, ISBN 034538167X. "Beautiful Queen Inos married the loyal stableboy Rap and made him her king. Fifteen years went by, Rap and Inos were comfortable, secure, and truly happy, raising their family in the little backwater kingdom of Krasnegar, well removed from the hurly-burly of great affairs. But in far-off Hub, the old Imperor's health - and, some said, his sanity - deteriorated inexorably. The borderlands were seething. Prince Emshandar - or Shandie, as Rap knew him - found himself leading his grandather's armies into terrible battles where victory and justice hung in gravest doubt. And now the end of the millennium was at hand, ushered in by prophecies of cataclysmic upheaval on a scale never before imagined. All across Pandemia, sensible people tried to dismiss a growing sense of unease as superstitious nonsense. Then a God appeared to Rap and warned him that the prophecies spoke the least of the truth. Devastation was a certainty; total destruction loomed. The very fabric of the world was at risk. And it was all Rap's fault. The last thing in the world Rap wanted was another adventure. And it might be the last thing he would ever get - ." 2. Upland Outlaws - 299 pp, 1993 first printing, ISBN 0345384776. "The power-mad dwarf-sorcerer Zinixo had driven Emshandar V from his throne. He had shattered the ancient Protocol that kept tenuous peace among Pandemia's warlocks. And his conquest had only begun. Somehow the deposed Imperor had escaped his clutches - so far - but Shandie would soon be found. Then the Impire would be Zinixo's alone. Outlying countries would fall beneath his fist. And at long last, he would wreak fabulous revenge upon Rap of Krasnegar. For Zinixo wielded the greatest magic ever imagined: an army of slave-sorcerers bound to serve his every whim - to the death." 3. The Stricken Field - 338 pp, 1994 first printing, ISBN 0345388747. "The 'forces' opposing the tyrant (Zinixo) were paltry, their leaders few. Now as armies both magic and mundane swept across the lands, each rebel leader carried the flame of freedom to a different corner of troubled Pandemia. Shandie rode north - into disaster. Raspnex (Zinixo's warlock uncle) disappeared, pursuing his own secret plans. And Rap toiled through fetid, steaming jungles in search of a powerful troll-witch who did not want to be found - all unaware that his loved ones were far from home, and further yet from any prayer of safety." 4. The Living God - 429 pp, 1994 first printing, ISBN 034538878X. "The sorcerer Zinixo had declared himself Almighty, and none could doubt that the end of the era was at hand. Goblin hordes ravished the Impire. Dragons incinerated entire legions in the space of a heartbeat. The slave-sorcerers of the Covin practiced whatever barbarities Zinixo required. Soon would come midsummer, and the Nordland Moot, and the smell of blood upon the air. Soon the mad dwarf-sorcerer would truly reign supreme - unless Rap of Krasnegar could conjure a miracle at the end of the millennium. Rap and his rebels were recruiting any magic-users the Covin had not yet perverted. And when the time came to move against Zinixo - if it came - they would aim one single, killing blow against the tyrant. It wasn't much of a plan. But it was all they had - ." Interiors - Part One has very light browning to pages, Part Four has one page with a small corner crease, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exteriors - Part One has light browning to edges of text block and light wear on front hinge; the other books have very light edge wear.
