During this twenty-year timespan the battle for separate schooling led to a significant emigration of Canadian Mennonites to Latin America, while another struggle was waged with our immigration authorities to allow the entry of Russian Mennonites into Canada. The book also covers the impact of the Depression on the Mennonites and their efforts to preserve their culture and racial identity. The book ends with the response of the Mennonites to the outbreak of the Second World War." New York Dorset 1992 0880297182 / 9780880297189 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
352 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(O)ffers a very different kind of tour to the armchair traveler. Wander through the haunted castles and cottages of Europe with Hans Holzer, the world's most famous psychic investigator, and explore a full range of psychic phenomena from the spirits of the British Isles to the haunts of Imperial Vienna. In England, Anne Boleyn's legendary ghost walks headless within the Tower of London; a procession of transparent monks appears in the Cathedral of Winchester, where no monks have trod since the sixteenth century; and Bloody Queen Mary still visits the four-poster bed where she slept in the dark days of 1553. At Kilkea Castle in Kildare, it is said that the Wizard Earl and his companions ride at night and will return someday from the beyond to 'put things right in Ireland'. Room No. 2 in the Hotel de l'Europe in Avignon holds a shocking surprise for the unwary guest; and in Paris, No. 3 avenue Montaigne offers a special concert of ghostly piano music from a spectral grand. Ghost occur wherever great tragedy has left an unfortunate person stranded between the next world and this one, someone who has not yet been freed from their emotional turmoil. The true accounts presented in this book are based on Dr. Holzer's personal investigations." One page leaf with two very small scollops at fore-edge. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor browning to inside edges.

Toronto / Ottawa Dundurn / Canadian War Museum 1989 1550020595 / 9781550020595 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
303 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Canadian War Museum Publication No. 25. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "Dealing briefly with the Swiss and Canadian mercenaries sent to Red River by Lord Selkirk in 1818, and the British garrisons supplied by the Imperial Government during the 1840s and 1850s, Dr. Stanley recounts in detail the organization and despatch of British and Canadian troops under the command of Colonel G.J. Wolseley to the newly formed province of Manitoba in 1870, the subsequent reinforcements sent to the West between 1871 and 1873 and the organization of the first militia units in Manitoba. The success of these several expeditions was owing, in large measure, not only to the officers and soldiers who took part, but also to the fledgling Department of Militia in Ottawa. These troop movements were facilitated by the construction of roads and the establishment of water communications between Fort William and Fort Garry. Drawing upon official documents and contemporary narratives, the author has written a fascinating account of the Red River Expeditions, bringing a fresh perspective to the story of Louis Riel in Manitoba, the Fenian Raids of 1871, and the military history of the Canadian federation." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, faint scratch on rear board. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.
