2 Delve, Ken. D-DAY: THE AIR BATTLE.
Ramsbury Crowood Press 2004 1861267045 / 9781861267047 Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 10" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps/plans. "6 June 1944 saw the Allied invasion of occupied Europe - one of the riskiest military operations of World War Two. The part played by air power in the success of the operation was crucial. This was the greatest concentration of striking power ever seen: 12,000 combat aircraft. Fighter-bombers such as the P-47 Thunderbolt and Hawker Typhoon bombed, strafed and rocketed tactical targets with great accuracy, while strategic bombers, escorted by hundreds of fighters, targeted bridges, marshalling yards, coastal guns and military stores. Other aircraft flew sophisticated decoy operations and hundreds of transports dropped paratroops or released gliders. In this, the only full-length book on the subject, Ken Delve examines the air campaign from the pre-invasion bombing strategy that prepared the battlefield to the massive air effort that accompanied the actual assault and the air umbrella during the vital weeks following the landings. Originally published in 1994, (it) has been substantially enlarged, re-illustrated and completely reset (providing) comprehensive coverage of this vital air campaign." Small bump at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of front hinge.

THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE., Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.)
7 Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.) THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1993 0802074618 / 9780802074614 First Paperback Edition. Soft Cover Very Good+
275 pp, 8vo (9" H). "Anne Shirley is the best known of a memorable group of heroines created by Lucy Maud Montgomery, a group that includes Emily Byrd Starr, Valancy Stirling, and Pat Gardiner. These characters are at the centre of Epperly's book, the first full-length critical study of all L.M. Montgomery's fiction. Epperly contends that Montgomery was a master of the romance genre, and through her use of literary allusions, repetitions, irony, and comic inversions she deftly manipulated the normal conventions of romance novels. By studying the fictional biographies of the heroines and their pursuit of romance, Epperly question the ways romance shapes what we consider valuable in our imaginings and experience. A book written for L.M. Montgomery fans and scholars." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, clean and bright.

STIRLING AT WAR., Falconer, Jonathan. Foreword by Murray Peden.
8 Falconer, Jonathan. Foreword by Murray Peden. STIRLING AT WAR.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, 1991, first edition.
128 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711020221 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings. "Weaving his narrative around the detailed eyewitness accounts of aircrews, groundcrews and those who built the Stirling, (t he author) reveals the troubled life story of the Shorts' big bomber. Through the eyes of a factory worker at Queen's Island, Belfast, we witness the birth of one of the RAF's first four-engined 'heavies'. We climb the crew ladder, follow th e s k i p per up the long dark fuselage to the cockpit and fly with him and his crew on one of the first Stirling raids over Germany. Lie on your belly in the bomb aimer's position as the skipper dodges flak and fighters at low level: 'We crossed th e e ne my c oast at Wilhelmshaven and were soon flying at low level between two of the Friesian Islands - the guns on each island appeared to be firing horizontally or down at us.' Sit in on a top secret briefing for an SD Stirling crew at Tem psf or d, and fl y w ith them to a DZ 'somewhere in Occupied Europe' to deliver their 'Joe'. Freeze in the biting East Anglian wind with the groundcrews on dispersals as they try to change an exhaust manifold: 'The Bristol Hercules engines were su perb - the re w as v irtu ally nothing to leak from them. But it was a long way down to the ground if you slipped on the wings.' Fly in the greatest aerial armadas ever seen as you carry crack paratroops to Normandy on the eve of D-Day, or tow a lumbe rin g Ho rsa g lider thro ugh flak-peppered skies to Arnhem." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny dint on bottom edge of rear board. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, has very light wrinkling and minor wear at top/bottom of s pine a nd f lap-f olds. Very Good/V ery Good

BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.
9 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

FLYING COLORS. FEATURING OVER 1300 MILITARY AIRCRAFT MARKINGS AND COLOR SCHEMES., Green, William and Swanborough, Gordon, compilers.
12 Green, William and Swanborough, Gordon, compilers. FLYING COLORS. FEATURING OVER 1300 MILITARY AIRCRAFT MARKINGS AND COLOR SCHEMES.
London Salamander 1997 086101944X / 9780861019441 Hard Cover Fine Very Good John Weal, Richard Caruana and Brian Knight.
207 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated in colour. "Military aircraft have been variously daubed, cunningly camouflaged, boastfully personalized or otherwise extravagantly colored since they first took to the air more than 80 years ago. From the time that the identity of aircraft was established with national insignia, the markings of aircraft has become a science, and their decoration an art form. At times of tension, trends have been toward camouflage colors for concealment as international relationships deteriorated. Yet, in peace and war, there have also been 'anti-camouflage' color schemes applied specifically to render aircraft more conspicuous for training, rescue and other purposes. 'Flying Colors' is a superb survey of this fascinating scene, depicting more than 100 different aircraft types, from the World War I Spads to the modern swing-wing Tornado, in more than 1300 spectacular illustrations. Splendid use is made of finely detailed profile drawings, top and bottom, head-on and 'scrap' views, together with emblem and other detail enlargements, all in full-color and each extensively researched by the compilers and artists who have striven for accuracy and interest. Each first-class drawing is described, with identification of squadron, unit, theater and period, and often even the pilot's name and rank too! Recognized as a major landmark in aviation publishing, this volume will especially delight aircraft modelmakers and all enthusiasts of the dramatic history of warplanes." Dust jacket has moderate creasing at top of spine - very light wrinkling at top/bottom of flap-folds and at bottom of spine.

Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722939 / 9780773722934 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
348 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he first complete portrait of Joey Smallwood - the most loved, feared and hated of Newfoundlanders who, through a singular will, not only changed his country's history but also held political power continuously, almost unchallenged, for twenty-one years and eight months. Smallwood was a man who, in his time, played many parts: a union organizer who became a strike breaker, a journalist who carried on a running battle with the press, a self-proclaimed socialist whose private friends included the right-wing premier of Quebec Maurice Duplessis, the Portuguese dictator Antonio Salazar, and the most controversial president of the United States, Richard Nixon. He trusted no one and believed that the only way to get somewhere was to take the wheel himself. It was this singleness of mind and purpose that saw him through two bitter and hard-fought constitutional campaigns that would see Newfoundland enter Confederation as our tenth province. Horwood cuts through the hype and half-truths, the anecdotes and legend, to get at the man and his times." Very minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of front hinge area, minor rubbing, faint water mark at top inside of front hinge area.

283 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Together with the SAS, LRDG and other such specialist units, the Special Boats Squadron traces its origins back to the Mediterranean theatre of operations during the Second World War. Originally part of Laycock's 8 Commando, the SBS rapidly developed its own skills, expertise and identity, despite technically serving as part of the SAS for much of the war. After the war, these 'pirates' became a unit within the Royal Marines and served throughout the world during the 'post-imperial peace'. Their activities have, until now, rarely been revealed. While the SAS has become world-famous for anti-terrorist exploits in the full glare of publicity, the SBS role was little known until it came to prominence in the Falklands conflict. There, SBS teams operated in parallel with their SAS counterparts, probing the Argentine-held islands and feeding back essential intelligence information. In an island war, they were very much in their element, and they played a key part in reconnoitring the eventual landing site for the Task Force at San Carlos." Three small light liquid marks on rear board. Dust jacket has some very light wrinkling at top edge, very light rubbing.

THE AVRO LANCASTER., Mason, Francis K.
18 Mason, Francis K. THE AVRO LANCASTER.
Aston, (Bourne End, Bucks, 1989).
437 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photos (some aerial), maps, reproductions, fold-out color cutaway. "...the most extensive chronicle of a British bomber ever undertaken - of more than half a million words - describes how the Lancaster came into being and how it fulfilled the faith placed in it by those who planned it. From the consuming belief, espoused by Trenchard between the Wars, that the heavy bomber was the raison d'etre of the R oyal Air Force, to the realisation that Britain, faced in 1936 with the likelihood of war with Germany, was still without an aircraft that could hit the enemy capital with worthwhile bombs. Thus was developed the famous trio of true heavy bombers, the Stirling, Halifax and Lancaster. And by the end of that war, the Lancaster equipped 60 out of Bomber Command's 80 heavy bomber squadrons; more than 1,3000 out of 1,850 British heavy bombers were Lancasters...the Author has made reference to all the outstanding raids undertaken in an extraordinary compendium of individual 'histories' of every Lancaster built (over 7,000 of them), and mention is made of several thousand individual crew members - separately indexed for ease of reference. Th e book contains hundreds of photographs (many from previously untapped sources) as well as maps and diagrams, and a separate Chapter - including cutaway and general arrangements drawings, executed by the Author in colour-describesthe Lancaster in considerable detail." Contents: Towards a Strategic Bombing Force; The Reluctant Transition: Farewell to Biplanes; Heavyweights - With Two Engines; Odds Too Great; The Lancaster is Born; The First Lancaster Squadrons; The Coming of the Pathfinders; No Corner of the Reich; Special People for a Special Job; The Battle of the Ruhr; The Battle of Hamburg; The Battle of Berlin; Nuremburg and Overlord; More Special Operations; In Support of the Armies; The Last Six Months; The Transition from War ; Lancasters in the Laboratory; In Other Air Forces; They Also Served; The Lancaster Described; Appendices - Deployment of Manchester and Lancaster Units; Awards of the Victoria Cross and the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal; Lancaster and Manchester Production, Allocation and Service; Lancasters with High Raid Tallies; Glossary; Bibliography. (Windsor Publications, n.p., 1983), Ist edition.
127 pp, 4to, hard cover in dust jacket. INSCRIBED AND DATED BY THE AUTHOR TO THE EDITIOR ON HALF-TITLE PAGE. B&w and color photos, maps, reproductions. "(T)ells the remarkable Saskatoon story with insight and skill, beginning with the captivating saga of the Temperance Colonists and the land they settled. Their vision of Saskatoon as a transportation centre foreshadowed the determination of later citizens to bring the railroads to their city, enabling Saskatoon to proclaim itself the 'Hub City' by the turn of the century. The decades of the new century brought struggle and achievement - the agricultural co-ops of the twenties; the Depression of the 'dirty thirties'; the mineral boom of the sixties; and Saskatoon's emergence, in the eighties, as a research centre for science and technology. A special chapter, 'Partners in Progress', profiles the contributions of Saskatoon's business community, whose support helped make this volume possible." 804 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, map. "Bomber Command's campaign started on the very first day of the Second World War and ended within a few hours of the final victory in Europe five and a half years later. It was an attempt to win a war in Europe by strategic bombing on such an enormous scale that historians are only now beginning to piece together the finer details of the individual raids. There have been many books about Bomber Command, but Martin Middlebrook, the aviation historian, and his research colleague Chris Everitt are the first to compile the full story of this fascinating campaign in reference form. They undertook the gargantuan task not only of documenting every Bomber Command operation but also of obtaining information from local archives in Germany, Italy and the occupied countries on the effects of the raids. Little of this material has been published previously, and never before have the two sides of Bomber Command's war been brought together in this way. (It) is sure to become the standard work of reference on this extraordinary campaign." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one pade with small wrinkle at bottom edge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling.
