CORNELL CAPA: PHOTOGRAPHS., Capa, Cornell and Whelan, Richard, editors.
2 Capa, Cornell and Whelan, Richard, editors. CORNELL CAPA: PHOTOGRAPHS.
Boston Bulfinch Press / Little, Brown 1992 0821217771 / 9780821217771 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Cornell Capa.
216 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w. "Cornell Capa, world famous for his photo-journalism as well as for his founding of New York's International Center of Photography, has had a long an d productive working life. His career has spanned several key decades of the twentieth century, and his work has taken him around the globe to cover political events and chronic social problems, to photograph the famous and the unsung. As a self-described concerned photographer, Cornell Capa has always been led by his instincts to photograph people - all kinds of people - with a humanitarian commitment. This book reflects that commitment in unforgettable pictures of missionaries in Central and South America; religious and tribal rituals; the presidental campaigns of Adlai Steven-son and John F. Kennedy; political upheavals, refugees, and wars; the historic and the marginal. Here, too, are moments of whimsy and joy, from Harlem to London to Peru, and memorable images of celebrities including Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Alec Guiness, Grandma Moses, Billy Graham, and Boris Pasternak. Despite the wide recognition of Cornell Capa's achievements, and the fact that he has spent his lifetime furthering the art of photography, this book is the first retrospective collection of his work to be published in the United States. All these photographs transmit crucial aspects of the political, social, cultural, and religious history of our times." Very minor cocking to book. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

7 Davies, Russell. (Ronald Searle.) RONALD SEARLE: A BIOGRAPHY.
London Sinclair-Stevenson 1990 1856190048 / 9781856190046 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Ronald Searle.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Born in 1920 in Cambridge, (Ronald Searle) became a regular contributor to the Cambridge Daily News in 1935, financed his own night-school studies in drawing and won an art-school scholarship. The war shattered the university-town idyll. In 1942 Searle was captured by the Japanese at Singapore and later put to work on the terrible 'Death Railway' from Siam to Burma. His remarkable eye-witness drawings, achieved with very scant materials, constitute a uniquely important documentary record of the horrors of those times. The post-war years found him in London. As creator of St Trinian's and delineator of Nigel Molesworth, he was a feted London celebrity in the Fifties. His tremendous appetite for work did not, however, save him from involvement in some peculiar situations. Searle's participation in the 1956 Suez Affair, detailed here for the first time, is one of the book's many surprises. In 1961, (he) abandoned the life he had built, moved to France and started again. Living with his second wife in a remote village in Haute-Provence, he has continued to delight and disturb the world with a stream of images that mocks with the best intentions: to make people laugh, and to entice them, through their laughter, to share his own critical vision of the world. Ronald Searle allowed Russell Davies special access to his archive, and has approved the selection of his work that helps to tell his story." 1" split in cloth at bottom of front hinge, very small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge.

"Come through the magic door with me, and sit here on the green settee, where you can see the old oak case with its untidy lines of volumes. Smoking is not forbidden. Would you care to hear me talk of them? Well, I ask nothing better, for there is no volume there which is not a dear personal friend, and what can a man talk of more pleasantly than that? The other books are over yonder, but these are my own favourites - the ones I care to re-read and to have near my elbow. There is not a tattered cover which does not bring it mellow memories to me." 12 Hunt, Peter, editor. Associate editors: Dennis Butts, Ethel Heins, Margaret Kinnell, Tony Watkins. With Gillian Avery, Anne Scott MacLeod, Julia Briggs, Zena Sutherland, Peter Hollindale, Michael Stone, Roderick McGillis & Beth Gilderdale. CHILDREN'S LITERATURE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.
Oxford Oxford University Press 1995 0192123203 / 9780192123206 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good
378 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Pictorial endpapers, many b&w and color photographs and reproductions. "(T)races the history of children's books in Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand from the very first printed books through to the present day. (This book) takes 'children's literature' to mean books designed for children as well as books for childhood, and so embraces everything from religious tracts to multi-media comics, from the 'classic' to the unashamedly popular. Written by leading experts, this survey shows that children's literature reflects how childhood has been defined, controlled, and appreciated at different times. It reveals how adults have explored questions of power, entertainment, sexuality, and equality through their writing for children, and demonstrates how the borders between what is adult and what children's fiction are routinely blurred. A series of chronological chapters charts the 'history' which begins in the sixteenth century with grammars and ABCs. We move from books of instruction through to fables and fantasies in the eighteenth century, from reward books and romance to school stories in the nineteenth, and on to comics, colour picture-books, and science fiction in (the twentieth century). Throughout the text, books, authors, illustrators, publishers, and children readers are discussed within their wider social, political, and economic environment. Richly illustrated in black and white and colour, and with a section on further reading, a full index, and a chronology which places books for children in their literary and political context, this is a fascinating study which will delight all readers, young and old." Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling; tiny dent on front hinge; slight fading to color on front panel, spine, top edge and flap-folds.

THE END OF ORDER: VERSAILLES 1919., Mee, Charles L., Jr.
17 Mee, Charles L., Jr. THE END OF ORDER: VERSAILLES 1919.
New York E.P. Dutton 1980 0525098100 / 9780525098102 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
301 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The first world war and the Versailles Treaty that followed produced the most serious upheaval in the long and stormy course of modern world history. Four great empires - Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, and Russia - were part of the war's rubble. Far from restoring the world to order, the diplomats who met in 1919 at Paris and at Versailles plunged the world again, this time irretrievably, into the chaos of the twentieth century. It was the end of order. At three o'clock on the afternoon of May 7, 1919, the head of the German delegation to the Paris Peace Conference entered a room in the Trianon Palace of Versailles and was 'dazzled and disoriented by the sudden explosion of sunlight reflected in the vast mirrors, the chandeliers and white walls'. Brockdorff-Rantzau was further bewildered by the Treaty that was presented to him - 'a mass of cross references and changed paragraphs' covering 200 printed pages and 140 articles. Yet nobody had studied the document - not the barrel-chested, shrewd, ferocious Clemenceau, commonly called 'The Tiger'; not the mercurial and crafty Lloyd George; and not Woodrow Wilson, the orator who looked like a Presbyterian minister and had been hailed as the Savior of Europe. What happened when the three most powerful heads of state gathered to establish a new world order is the subject of this important book. By turns appalling and hilarious, but informed throughout by a tragic sense of irony, this book is at once a work of art and a relentless disclosure of human beings caught in the process of making their own history." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, soft crease down spine, faint tiny foxing marks on edge of text block - mainly top edge, small light soiling mark in bottom margin of page 101. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very small light stain under laminate of front flap - text is legible, light foxing on inside top edge - mainly on front panel, minor edge wear, minor rubbing.

249 pp, 8vo (9" H). INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR ON HALF-TITLE PAGE, 'TO JOHN, ALL THE BEST CATHERINE SLANEY'. B&w photographs. "Catherine Slaney grew to womanhood unaware of her celebrated Black ancestors. An unanticipated meeting was to change her life. Her great-great grandfather was Dr. Anderson R. Abbott, the first Canadian-born Black to graduate from medical school in Toronto in 1861. In 'Family Secrets' (she) narrates her journey along the trail of her family tree, back through the era of slavery and the plight of fugitive slaves, the Civil War, the Elgin settlement near Chatham, Ontario, and the Chicago years. Why did some of her family identify with the Black community while othes did not? What role did 'passing' play? Personal anecdotes and excerpts from archival Abbott family papers enliven the historical context of this compelling account of a family dealing with an unknown past. An important contribution to African-Canadian history, this moving and uplifting story demonstrates that understanding one's identity requires first the embracing of the past."
