Jersey, Channel Islands Brookside Publications 1983 0905824067 / 9780905824062 Very Good Very Good
525 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "(T)he first comprehensive book devoted to the passenger lines and liners running from Europe to Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. Seventy-one lines have been deemed to merit a chapter and fleet list, but it is a sad thought that only one of them, the Costa Line, is still running a multi-passenger service between the Old World and these countries of the New, and even their sailings are not very frequent. The reason, of course, is that the steamship and motorship have been eclipsed by the aeroplane. (This book) contains about 150 illustrations of ships, together with indexes of ships and lines, a chronological list of ship losses and a list of the largest ships (14,000 tons and over)." Light waviness to edges of text block, small slight bump at bottom corner of front board. Dust jacket has slight fading to spine color, minor edge wrinkling.

80 pp, oblong 8vo (8 7/16" H x 10 1/2" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0862880505 Profusely illustrated with colour reproductions, b&w drawings. "Admirers of Don Breckon's unerring blend of a faultless eye for detail and an irresistible nosta lgia for the era of steam will need no prompting to acquire and treasure this beautifully produced book. It is all here: the shapely majesty of the locomotives (with the emphasis on the Great Western, but with all the Big Four well repres e n t e d ) , s e t in landscapes of a 'classical Constable calmness'; the stations, accurate in every evocative period detail; the hidden rituals of the engine shed; the porters, signalmen and passengers who were privileged to play their part in t hi s gl or io us p a no ra ma. The artist himself has provided the commentary, and Roger Malone has written an introduction full of delightful revelations of the life and work of a painter who, he says, 'reminds us of what we are missing in a worl d t ha t h as dis mis sed c har act er and individuality in favour of streamlined efficiency'." Shire, Princes Risborough, Aylesbury, 1980.
80 pp, 8 1/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 0852635311 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "When Britain's railways were nationalised in 1948 more than nineteen thousand steam locomotives were taken over from the private companies, and the manufact ure of steam locomotives continued until 1960. This book describes the principal classes of steam locomotives working ac t i v e l y i n Britain between 1948 and 1968, with emphasis on those types of which examples have been preserved. The author discusses the engines under the headings express, mixed traffic, tank and freight locomotives, comparing designs inherit ed f ro m th e G WR , L MSR, LNER and SR with the subsequent BR Standard classes. There is a useful list of locomotives that have been preserved telling where each can be seen, and there are many photographs of the engines at work." ISBN 0710602006 "....one man's personal, photographic record of the steam locomotive's elimination from Britain's nationalised rail way network and its subsequent reappearance as a source of recreation and pleasure. Brian Cooke brings to his subject a rare combination of the technique and skills of a professional creative photographer coupled with first-hand knowledge o f t h e s t eam locomotive both on and off the footplate. His pictures remind us of steam's melancholy rundown, with emphasis on scenes in his native north-east England; they bring fresh glimpses of the unique Barry scrapyard which has proved s uc h a v al ua b le s ource of motive power for the increasingly ambitious preservation movement; and they conclude with a striking series of images of the steam locomotive in recent times at work and rest on and of BR tracks. Manifest in this re mar ka bl e c oll ect io n o f o ver 150 finely reproduced pictures are Brian Cooke's fresh approach to recording the drama of steam and his painstaking darkroom technique. Supported by a lively and often humourous commentary on steam locomotives a nd t hos e w ho p ursu e th em. ...N otes on equipment, materials and techniques used to make the photographs form the subject of a concise appendix." STEAM NAVIGATION AND ITS RELATION TO THE COMMERCE OF CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES., Croil, James.
17 Croil, James. STEAM NAVIGATION AND ITS RELATION TO THE COMMERCE OF CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES.
Toronto Coles 1973 Facsimile Edition. Fine Very Good
381 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w photographs, drawings, reproductions, maps. A facsimile of the edition published by William Briggs, Toronto, 1898. "(This) is an exciting study of the development of steam navigation in Canada. In tracing the transition from sailing ships to the paddle-steamer, and from the paddle-steamer to the revolutionary screw-propeller, the author writes with the kind of imaginative insight that brings back to life a past age of challenge. One of the delightful features of this book is the vivid study of shipping on the Great Lakes. Croil's account of the lake ships catches the imagination with its comprehensive study of past glories: LaSalle's schooner of ten tons, whose journey was halted by the Niagara Falls; the first lake steamer, the 'Frontenac' (1816), said to be the best example of naval architecture in North America; the 'Queen Charlotte' (1818), which carried passengers from Prescott to the stage-coach station at the head of the Bay of Quinte; the 'Gore', built at Niagara in 1838, which was one of the earliest passenger steamers on Georgian Bay; and the 'Bruce Mines', which carried copper ore on Lake Huron. The reader will be equally delighted by the large number of illustrations Croil provides. (They) present a glorious pictorial record of early shipping, showing the curious Miller Twin-Boat of 1788, C.P.R.'s astonishingly modern 'Empress' line of 1891, the Ottawa river steamer, the 'Sovereign', and the 'Passport', a mail paddle-steamer which sailed from Lake Ontario to Montreal." Dust jacket has minor edge rubbing, very tiny tear at bottom of spine.
