171 pp, 8vo (9" H). Inscribed by author on title page. B&w photographs. "A first-hand account of the experiences of a young Canadian airwoman who served both in Canada and on overseas duty, this series of 150 letters brings home the day-to-day immediacy of life in uniform during the Second World War. Moments of hilarity interspersed with impatience and frustration are recorded verbatim, along with an underlying sense of urgency about winning a war that hung in the balance for too long. Written to the Dean of Women at Macdonald College in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Mary Buch's letters lay untouched for over fifty years after her return to Canada from England in 1945. Today they serve as a looking-glass into the War Years that is tinged with the freshness of youthful spontaneity and the promise of a brighter tomorrow. Carolyn Gossage has interwoven colourful contextual sidebars that provide today's readers with an overview of the times and circumstances that have become increasingly elusive in the intervening years." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, slight soft crease to top corner of rear cover - with very light migration into last few papges, spine flat and uncreased.

13 Cheadle, Walter B. Introduction and notes by A.G. Doughty and Gustave Lanctot. Introduction to new edition by Lewis H. Thomas. CHEADLE'S JOURNAL OF TRIP ACROSS CANADA, 1862-1863.
Edmonton M.G. Hurtig 1971 0888300352 / 9780888300355 First Thus Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
311 pp, 7 5/8" H. B&w illustrations, fold-out map at rear."The incredible journey of William Fitzwilliam, Viscount Milton, and his long-suffering companion, Dr. Walter Butler Cheadle, over the uncharted Yellowhead route in 1862-63 was a highly improbable, miraculously successful expedition, well-seasoned with comic relief though it very nearly ended several times in tragedy. Dr. Cheadle's 'Journal' first appeared in 1931, sixty-six years after publication of 'The North-West Passage by Land', a bestselling account of the expedition supposedly co-authored by the young Lord Milton and his companion. Besides confirming suspicions that the first book was in fact Cheadle's, the 'Journal' is more candid about the two adventurer's motives ('we were a mere party of pleasure'), and a much more precise record of life and travel in the Northwest during the latter days of the fur trade era. Cheadle acknowledges the heavy debt owed by all of the early explorers to the plains Indians, who passed on to the first white men their sophistication in the ways of the wilderness. He also records the gradual demoralization of the native people under the impact of European culture. His own Assiniboine guide was an invaluable support to Cheadle, who had to cope not only with Lord Milton's constant petulance and frequent illness, but with the most obnoxious hitchhiker ever to cross the Rockies." On or two small faint areas of browning on edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear and tiny tears/creases - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds (archivally taped), slight fading to spine color, faint small writing impressions on front panel.

JOHN PRINCE: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS., Douglas, R. Alan, edited and with introduction by. Foreword by William G. Davis.
14 Douglas, R. Alan, edited and with introduction by. Foreword by William G. Davis. JOHN PRINCE: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS.
Toronto The Champlain Society 1980 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good+
229 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H) - red cloth with gilt lettering/crest on spine. No. 844 of Twelve Hundred and Fifty Copies of this Volume prnted for the Champlain Society. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John Prince was undoubtedly one of the most colourful individuals to reside in Upper Canada during the half century that preceded Confederation. (The mythology that had grown up around his memory in southwestern Ontario identified him as the product of an illegal marriage between George IV and Maria Anne Fitzherbert.) His eventful career as an attorney, politician, soldier, entrepreneur, and jurist caused him to become a legend in his own lifetime both in Essex County, where he resided at Sandwich from his arrival in 1833 until 1860, and in Sault Ste Marie where he spent the last ten years of his life as Judge of the Algoma District. In the legislature his independence and erratic individualism soon earned him the reputation of a political maverick. Business interests and entrepreneurial instincts attracted him to railway and banking ventures as early as the 1830s. Individualist and eccentric though he was, John Prince was still very much a man of his age." Minor wear at corners.

TIAN WEN: A CHINESE BOOK OF ORIGINS., Field, Stephen, translator. Calligraphy by T.C. Ma.
17 Field, Stephen, translator. Calligraphy by T.C. Ma. TIAN WEN: A CHINESE BOOK OF ORIGINS.
New Directions, New York, 1986, first edition.
123 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0811210103 "Relatively unknown in the West, (this book) is a fascinating, though often baffling, archaic collection of 186 'questions' about the origins of life and the meaning of a wide vari ety of happenings startling and mundane, earthly and celestial. Because the poem has no single narrative thread, the most informed speculation posits group authorship by a number of roving Taoist scholars, each contributing riddles about t h e h i s t o r y and legends of his own province as well as ironically posed inquiries into the nature of the universe. The enigmatic and sometimes Sphinxlike conundrums may have been originally intended for debate - to give the popular and promi ne nt di al ec ti ci an s of over 2,300 years ago a tool for honing their convoluted responses. But however the poem took on its present shape and content, it remains the single most comprehensive catalogue of ancient Chinese mythology and pre-Imp eri al l ege nd in exi ste nce . This translation....combines sound scholarship with an artful grace to produce the 186 questions in couplets that both tease and enchant. In addition to a historical introduction that clearly explains what is known and no t know n a bou t th e po em, Field provides extensive notes to help the English-speaking reader understand the basic Chinese myths alluded to in the questions." The poem is presented in Chinese 'li-shi' script opposite the English text. P revio us o wn er's chop (st amp p n hal f-ti tle page, tiny bump to top edge of both boards. THE HISTORY OF BRITISH BUS SERVICES. 2nd REVISED EDITION., Hibbs, John.
18 Hibbs, John. THE HISTORY OF BRITISH BUS SERVICES. 2nd REVISED EDITION.
David & Charles, Newton Abbot, 1989, second, revised edition.
306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0715389629 B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "The bus industry is going through a period of rapid change, and this is best understood against the background of events, for decisions taken a s long ago as 1916 still influence its structure, and the way busmen think about their function. There are many strands to the story, the longest taking us back to the appearance of the hackney carriage and the stage coach in the seventee n t h c e n t u r y. There are the combine companies of the inter-war years, and their battle with the four main line railways for control of their services; there are the 'pirates', old and new; and there are the municipal transport fleets, stemm in g us u al ly f ro m tr amway operations. We have to go to nineteenth century France for the origin of the name 'omnibus' itself. Professor Hibbs discusses the effect of technical advances on the provision of public services, and writes of tick et sy ste ms , t ime tab les , fle et names and liveries, and some of the odder regulations that govern operations and the travelling public. There is an objective discussion of methods of licensing and control, and of the economic and political ba ckg rou nd o f t he b us o pera tors . But this is the story of the men and women as well as motor vehicles; of shrewd pioneers, international financiers, trade unionists and well-known politicians. Not least it is the story of the crews on the b uses , fo r who m th e ind ustry is n ot ju st a li ving, but a way of life as well....(this new edition includes a chapter that brings) the story from 1968 to 1988." Slight waviness to fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket has very light edge wri nklin g - m ainly along botto m edge , one minor chi p, min or rubbing, very small area of light color offset on inside surface. VG+/VG

668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." 431 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with gilt lettering/banding on spine and front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection.B&w illustrations. A facsimile of the edition published by John Winston Co., Philadelphia, 1913 - with a new introduction for the Coles Canadiana Collection. "After establishing the physical setting of French Canada and its natural splendor, Hopkins examines and describes the types - religious, social, psychological - who were responsible for the creation of French Canada, and French Canadian society. As themes, Hopkins emphsizes the discoverers Cartier and Champlain, the explorers - fur traders Lasalle, and LaVerendrye, the roles of the Church, the martyrs, the early government administrators. Hopkins' views and sentiments reflected the philosophies of many of his contemporaries, including John A. Macdonald, Wilfrid Laurier and Sir Thomas Chapais. Despite the strong and steady current of Imperial sentiment prevailing, an incipient Canadian nationalism was emerging, fostered by the creation of national heroes, villains and saints."
