"In German-occupied France in 1940, only a few people refused to give up the great ideals of their country - liberty, equality, and fraternity. O ne of these was Raoul Laporterie. Starting right after the fall of France, he supplied false documents, money, transport, and shelter to more than 1,600 people. Those rescued were chiefly Sephardic Jews of Bordeaux, but also included a co v e y o f n uns, some French soldiers evading prison camps, and Allied flyers fleeing captivity. He was assisted by his wife, Laure, and his daughter, Irene, his employees in his clothing stores, and all the residents of the village of Bascons, ne ar t h e bo r de r between Occupied and Vichy France, where he was mayor. Risking death daily, Laporterie managed to outmaneuver and fool the Germans repeatedly. A true Christian, he loved others regardless of the consequences. Today, at ag e 9 4, he ha s rec ei ved m a ny honours from the governments of France and Israel. This is his dramatic story." Minor edge wear, minor browning on bottom front edge. 4 Castle, Douglas. Illustrated by Ellis Silas. EAST OF ALGIERS.
Blackie & Son, London, n.d.
288 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 4 b&w plates. "When H.M. destroyer 'Screel' off Algiers is diverted to go to the aid of an aircraft in trouble, none of the crew has the least inkling that this incident is the starting-poin t of a long-drawn-out chase and a bewildering chain of strange adventures. In particular, Peter Watson, the 'Screel's' young sub-lieutenant, tumbles into more than one tight corner both at sea and ashore on the trail of the mysterious fre i g h t e r i n which two eminent scientists, captured by an unknown Power, are held prisoners. The chase, directed by Mr. Venners, unconventional secret-service agent, leads from Algiers to Cairo and Port Said and on into the Indian Ocean, where a t er ri bl e c yc lo n e complicates the plans of pursuer and pursued alike. The enemy is ruthless and determined, the most formidable among them being a grossly fat Armenian, the spider at the centre of countless webs of intrigue throughout th e E ast . But wh er e doe s D ri scoll, Peter's American rescuer, fit into the picture? It needs some time before this and other baffling questions are answered and Mr. Venners finally accomplishes his mission. The result is a rousing story, told by an a ut hor who obv io usly has a thorough knowledge of the sea and the ports which form his background." A PROSPECT OF GRAY'S INN., Cowper, Francis. Foreword by Hon. Sir William McNair.
5 Cowper, Francis. Foreword by Hon. Sir William McNair. A PROSPECT OF GRAY'S INN.
Stevens & Sons, London, 1951, first edition.
187 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. Presents "a view over the long and varied history of Gray's Inn from the Middle Ages till to-day. For the lover of London and the social historian, no less than for the lawyers, the f ascination of the Inns of Court is irresistible. But this is more than a story of an Inn of Court and its members, or even of its six centuries of change in the shape of our legal system and the ways of the lawyers at study, at work and at p l a y . H ere Gray's Inn, starting as a manor house in the fields outside London, grows and changes as the city reaches out to enclose it. It feels the impact of religious change and civil war. Tudor, Stuart, Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian L on do n gr ow up around it. The bombs of two wars devastate it. Yet through every transformation its continuity is unbroken. And the Author demonstrates the essential part which that continuity plays in safeguarding the conception of freedom un der th e rul e o f wa r." Scattered tiny light foxing marks throughout pages, foxing on endpapers and edges of textblock, dust soiling on top of textblock, small closed tear (archivally taped) at top of pages 113 to 130, light edge rubbing, f ain t di scol or atio n on c l oth on boards. Grove Weidenfeld, New York, 1992, first edition.
233 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0802113825 B&w photographs, map, plan. "On December 21, 1988, a small block of plastic explosive tore apart a New York-bound Boeing 747, killing 259 passengers and crew and taking the lives of 11 residents of the tiny Scottish village of Lockerbie. The world followed in horrified fascination as a tale of international terrorism, airline ineptitude, and political gamesmanship unfolded. But another story was lost among the headli nes. Making use of more than three years of research and interviews, (the authors) present the whole picture of the disaster, including the story behind this tragic event: that of the people who died and the family members - who were left to d e a l w ith the devastating aftermath of the explosion. (This) is the shocking tale of the bombing, told through the family members' personal experiences: housewives who became adroit at handling the media; a doctor who became an authority on ex pl os iv es ; a real estate saleswoman who became an expert on terrorist groups; and the many others who sacrificed careers and futures in order to reform airline security and bring the terrorists to justice. The authors trace the history of the Pan Am 10 3 b om bin g, starting with the incidents that incited terrorists to attack and culminating with the indictment of two Libyans in November of 1991." Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." Very tiny bump at top corner of both boards, small slight bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.

Alan Sutton, Stroud, 1995, first edition.
242 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0750906057 B&w illustrations. "Starting from the inherited tendencies of his unstable mother, this book follows Charles's involvements with women, from the passionate, illicit affair with his cousin, Louise de Montbazon, following his return from the '45, which resulted in a son, and his cruel arrogance when he took a new mistress replacing her, to his rough treatment of Clementine Walkinshaw, who had nursed him in 1746, and w h o s a c rificed herself for him. She came to live with him, and bore him a daughter, the 'bonnie lass of Albany', his comfort when the dynastic marriage he eventually made with the young Princess Louise of Stolberg came apart, leaving him an e ld er ly cu ck ol d. Judged the wild man of Europe as a result of his scandalous behaviour, Charles's boorishness and drunkenness had cost him the stability he craved, and in his later years he was both ill and lonely, turning to his daughter to s ati sfy hi s lo ngi ng for the love that he had so easily cast aside in his earlier stormy relationships. She became the pride of his life, and when he died four years later, it was with the promise that she would be his rightful heir....this tim ely book pro vi des a re -ex amination of the Scottish hero whose flawed character and lack of success in love undoubtedly influenced his relations with the royal courts of Europe and played an important part in his role in the history of Scotl and and Engla nd, p erh aps contr ibut ing as much to the defeat of the Jacobite cause as 'Butcher' Cumberland's musket fire at Culloden." CHATEAUX OF THE LOIRE., Dunlop, Ian. Preface by the Duc de Brissac.
13 Dunlop, Ian. Preface by the Duc de Brissac. CHATEAUX OF THE LOIRE.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1969, first edition.
215 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, color frontispiece, b&w plates, plans. "Travellers of every age have extolled the beauties of the chateaux of the Loire....By making use of their descriptions Mr. Dunlop shows us the chateaux as they were in their prime. He resurrects the vanished glories of Le Verger, Bury, Richelieu and Chanteloup, and assigns them their proper place in the mosaic. What was it that caused the King and his Courtiers to build s o l a v i s h ly in this region? By way of an answer, the reader is taken kite-hawking and stag hunting. What purpose did the immense size of the chateaux serve? The author takes us below stairs for a look at the great hierarchy of servants w h o ma i nt ai ne d a no ble household. These castles and palaces were the background to crucial historical events. Mr. Dunlop allows eye-witnesses to speak for themselves. We watch the Conspiracy of Amboise through the eyes of the English Ambass ad or ; w e ove rhe ar th e mur der of the duc de Guise with those who were in the next room. Thre Revolution is chronicled through the windows of Cheverny. Starting with Chinon in the days of Joan of Arc and ending with the restorations of the ni net een th c en tury , th is boo k give s the most comprehensive, and certainly the most original, picture of the Chateaux of the Loire. It is not an omnibus guide book - though it would be a very useful companion on a tour of the Loire Valley. It is not a tre ati se on styl e - but t he ar chitectural student may learn a lot from it. What it is is a book for the reader who wishes to take an intelligent interest in the buildings of one of the most beautiful and historic areas of France." 332 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "(O)n 1 July 1916, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 733 of 801 men in the 1st Newfoundland Regiment were killed. From their starting position in a British support trench, the Newfoundlanders had to cross some 230 metres of fire-swept ground before they reached their own front line. In less than a half-hour, it was all over. The divisional commander wrote of the Newfoundland effort: 'It was a magnificent display of trained and disciplined valour, and its assault failed of success because dead men can advance no further.' Well might the Germans refer to the Battle of the Somme as das Blutbad - the bloodbath. From 1 July to 15 November 1916, a period of just 138 days, more than 310,000 soldiers from four great armies, the British, Canadian, French, and German, were killed. The German death toll on the Somme was larger than that of all the Allied forces combined. The heroism of the Dominion troops moved British prime minister David Lloyd George to write: 'The Canadians played a part of such distinction that thenceforth they were marked as storm troops. Coming into the line, they prepared for the worst.' After four and a half months of fighting, the Allied armies had not reached the line they set for themselves for the first day of battle. In this vivid, deeply researched account of one of history's most destructive battles, (the author) tracks (it) through the experiences of footsoldiers, generals, and everyone in between. Interwoven with photographs, journal entries, original maps, and documents from every stage and level of planning, (this book) is the most authoritative and affecting account of this bloody turning point in the Great War."
