10 Arnup, John D. MIDDLETON: THE BELOVED JUDGE.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1988 0771007959 First Edition Very Good Very Good
202 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of Ontario's and Canada's greatest judges, William Edward Middleton (1860-1948), who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario for thirty-three years, twenty-two of them as an appellate judge. At a time when a number of Supreme Court justices were belligerent to counsel and irascible toward their brother judges, Mr. Justice Middleton set a high standard of courtesy and civility that has carried on to the present day. Because (he) never sought attention or encouraged controversy, his contributions have been known heretofore only in legal circles. Yet here is a man whose written judgments are still cited fifty, sixty, even seventy years later, the judge who sat on 'the Great Stork Derby' case of the 1930s, and who decided which of the two litigious Kellogg brothers could sell his corn flakes in Canada. In addition, Middleton was a renowned botanist and legal scholar. The prison inmates of his Bible class knew him better and appreciated his exemplary character far more than the average citizen. (This book) is rich with anecdotage and presents important legal cases in a manner the general reader can understand and appreciate." Minor old tape residue at top/bottom edges of free endpapers, small corner crease on page 7, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small ink mark on bottomm edge of both boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one or two very tiny edge tears, minor rubbing.

Collins, London, 1953, 1st edition.
320 pp, small 8vo (7 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. "....gives a vivid picture of Robert Burns at the height of his creative powers, acclaimed as Scotland's national bard and yet bitterly aware of the empty glory of that fame so far as any worth-while improvement in his immediate prospects are concerned. He has left the scene of his brief triumph in the Edinburgh drawing-rooms. He is a farmer again, trying to wrest a living from the grudging soil of Ellisland . . . H e h a s very much on his mind the cares of a wife and family, for whom he is determined to make a home. Through these pages the sterling worth of Jean Armour shines like a star. Bonnie Jean has hitherto had scant justice paid to her by b io gr ap he rs . He re her character is limned with admiration and affection. One understands the strength of the bond between her and Burns, and how it could withstand the devastating impact of Burns's infatuation for Anna Park, the golden-haire d H ebe of th e G lo b e T ave rn in Dumfries....But the story is concerned too with Burns's intellectual development, not only as a poet but as a thinker peculiarly sensitive to the fresh political breezes that are blowing in so strongly from Fra nce. ...T he b ook ends wi th the aba ndonment of the farm and of the life he had known since boyhood, the never-ending struggle with the land; already the shadow of his last tragic years in Dumfies lies darkly across his path...." 326 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and maps. Inscribed by the author on title page: "All the best - Ted Barris. March '99". "In 1950, nearly 25,000 Canadians signed on for a UN-sponsored 'police action' to stop the Communist incursion into South Korea. They joined a multi-national expeditionary force that quickly found itself embroiled in a full-scale war. Members of the Canadian navy, airforce and infantry fought with distinction and endured months of bloody stalemate that ultimately stopped the Communists but failed to reunite the people of the Korean peninsula - with consequences that continue to haunt the world today. Ted Barris interviewed hundreds of Korean War veterans to gather their stories of heroism and survival, tragedy and absurdity, successes and SNAFUS. He has woven their tales into a fascinating look at a war that many have forgotten." Book is Fine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, tiny dent on rear hinge, minor rubbing.

525 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "(T)he first comprehensive book devoted to the passenger lines and liners running from Europe to Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. Seventy-one lines have been deemed to merit a chapter and fleet list, but it is a sad thought that only one of them, the Costa Line, is still running a multi-passenger service between the Old World and these countries of the New, and even their sailings are not very frequent. The reason, of course, is that the steamship and motorship have been eclipsed by the aeroplane. (This book) contains about 150 illustrations of ships, together with indexes of ships and lines, a chronological list of ship losses and a list of the largest ships (14,000 tons and over)." Melbourne Gold Star 1972 0726001139 / 9780726001130 First Edition Very Good Very Good
143 pp, 8 5/8" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "Alan Marshall is called 'Gurawilla' or 'Song maker' by the natives of Arnhem Land. He and Sreten Bozic have studied the few remaining nomadic aboriginal tribes in Australia and have come to love and admire their culture. This book is the result of their knowledge of, and respect for, a race which had and still has vastly different - and perhaps superior - ideals from those of the white invaders who commandeered their lives and land. For, until the advent of the white man, the Aboriginals lived in complete accord with nature. Australian tribal society was uniquely a-materialistic and egalitarian, and was characterized by a rich ceremonial culture and religious life. It emphasised mystical communion with the environment rather than individual achievement and the glorification of human prowess. Human life was always considered to be part of the natural cycle and the happiness and gentleness of Aboriginal society indicates the worth of a traditional naturalistic culture. These myths, the foundation of Australia's ancient cultural past, must live again in their fulness. Perhaps this book may help such a rejuvenation and create just a little understanding." Small Christmas gift inscription on front pastedown, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

London Osprey 1991 1855321491 / 9781855321496 First Edition Very Good- Very Good
128 pp, 11 7/8" H. Profuesly illustrated with colour photographs. "Built to counter the seemingly invincible Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat, the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle has proven to be more than a match for any 'red' fighter interceptor for over 15 years. Carrying the all-seeing Hughes AN/APG-63 radar inside its massive radome, the interception capabilities of the Eagle have been matched only by its US Navy rival, the F-14 Tomcat. Although a large aeroplane, the Eagle is incredibly agile, with plenty of power from its twin afterburning Pratt & Whitney F-100 turbofans. These allow a pilot to exploit the F-15 Eagle's suberb in-flight characteristics to the fullest extent. Entering frontline squadron service with the USAF's Tactical Air Command in late 1974, the F-15 has gone on to equip no less than six tactical fighter wings based in the USA, and one apiece in Germany and Japan. Five Air National Guard units also bolster the front line ranks with earlier version of the mighty Eagle. All USAF operators of the potent F-15 are graphically featured in this stunning volume. A chapter on the rarely illustrated Japanese Air Self-Defence Force complements the star-spangled F-15s." Minor edge wear, small faint erasure mark at top of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, some areas of light wrinkling at top edge.
