2 Betcherman, Lita-Rose. THE LITTLE BAND: THE CLASHES BETWEEN THE COMMUNISTS AND THE POLITICAL AND LEGAL ESTABLISHMENT IN CANADA, 1928-1932.
Ottawa Deneau 0888790716 / 9780888790712 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three very small corner bumps. Dust hacket has very light edge wear and wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge, tiny scuffs on rear flap-fold.

IT MADE YOU THINK OF HOME. THE HAUNTING JOURNAL OF DEWARD BARNES, CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE: 1916-1919., Cane, Bruce. (Deward Barnes)
3 Cane, Bruce. (Deward Barnes) IT MADE YOU THINK OF HOME. THE HAUNTING JOURNAL OF DEWARD BARNES, CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE: 1916-1919.
Dundurn, Toronto, 2004, first edition.
318 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550025120 "This is (the story of Deward Barnes, a Canadian soldier of WWI), in his words, written as the events of the Great War were unfolding. Illustrated with Deward's sketches and contemporary photos, (it) takes us into the mind of this ordinary Canadian soldier, trapped in a world in which he had to pay a terrible price in order to survive. In 1917, Deward was assigned to the firing squad that was to take the life of Pr i v a te Harold Lodge, who had been convicted of desertion by a court martial. Lodge was one of 23 Canadians executed during the war by their own brothers at arms. It was an experience that changed Deward forever. Bruce Cane has provided valuable i ns ig hts into Deward's words by juxtaposing (them) with the official accounts of these events, along with other first-hand accounts from the period, in order to capture the nuance of each of his entries. Deward Barnes' diary takes us into the t ren che s a nd firing lines of the Western Front like no other first-hand Canadian account before. Deward's is the voice of the Canadian soldier, Everyman in khaki, the men who today lie in their graves in the fields of Flanders and Picardy." Chri stma s no tati on, place, date and signature in pencil on free front endpaper; light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good+

4 Clark, Andrew. A KEEN SOLDIER: THE EXECUTION OF SECOND WORLD WAR PRIVATE HAROLD PRINGLE.
Toronto Alfred A. Knopf 2002 067697354X / 9780676973549 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
342 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Harold Pringle was underage when the Second World War broke out, eager to leave quiet Flinton, Ontario, to serve by his father's side. But few who volunteered to fight 'the good fight' realized what horror lay ahead; soon both young Harold and his father were cracking under the strain. His father was sent home; Harold Pringle found himself in Italy, fighting on the bloody 'Hitler Line'. Shellshocked, this broken soldier embarked on a tragic, final course: desertion, debauchery in the streets of Rome and a suspect accusation of murder. His appeal was reviewed by the highest levels of government, right up to Prime Minister King. But two months after the official end of the war, Private Pringle was put to death - the only soldier the Canadians had executed since the First World War. His own countrymen carried out the orders, forbidden to go home before completing this last grotesque assignment. The Pringle file was closed and stayed that way for fifty years - until Andrew Clark uncovered it and began a two-year investigative search. (This) is a true-life military detective story that shows another side of what many consider our proudest military campaign. Andrew Clark examines the fallout of a crisis that disfigured our national conscience and continues to raise questions about the ethics of war." Minor wrinkle at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

5 Donegan, Rosemary. Introduction by Rick Salutin. SPADINA AVENUE
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." Very tiny bump at top corner of both boards, small slight bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.

New York Del Rey / Ballantine Mass Market Paperbacks Very Good Darrell K. Sweet (1-4), cover art.
Seven of the first eight books of the 'Pip and Flinx' series - 6 7/8" H. ***Please note: "For Love of Mother-Not" is not included in this grouping - it would be book 1 or book 5, depending on whether you are reading in publication or chronological order.*** 1. Tar-Aiym Krang - 251 pp, 1983 8th printing, ISBN 034530280X. "The planet (Moth) attracted unwary travelers, hardened space-sailors, and merchant buccaneers - a teeming, constantly shifting horde that provided a comfortable income for certain quick-witted fellows like Flinx and his pet flying-snake Pip. With his odd talents, the pickings were easy enough so that Flinx did not have to be dishonest - most of the time. In fact, it hardly seemed dishonest at all to steal a starmap from a dead body that didn't really need it anymore. But Flinx wasn't quite smart enough. He should have wondered why the body was dead!" 2. Orphan Star - 234 pp, 1977 20th printing, ISBN 0345324498. "His birth had been shrouded in mystery, and all Flinx knew of himself was that he'd been abandoned by those who had spawned him. Raised by Mother Mastiff in the marketplace of Drallar, Flinx eventually discovered that his unknown parents had bequeathed to him a curious legacy - a legacy of extraordinary mental powers that were both an incalculable asset and a most dangerous liability. (It) would lead him - and his potent protector, the minidrag Pip - into the clutches of one of the most depraved and powerful men in the galaxy - on to a harrowing search for the truth about his birth - and out of one world into another on his most dangerous adventure ever." 3. End of the Matter - 246 pp, 1987 7th printing, ISBN 0345334655. "Flinx set out for Alaspin, the ruggedly primitive homeplanet of his flying snake. There he hoped to find the giant man with the gold earring who somehow held the key to Flinx's mysterious past and to the strange powers he possessed. Chasing down his heritage was trouble enough, but Flinx didn't know what real trouble was until he realized that the Qwarm - a deadly assassin squad - were three steps behind him with a contract to kill." 4. Bloodhype - 249 pp, 1977 2nd printing, ISBN 0345258452150. "Bloodhype was the most dangerous drug in the galaxy. It caused instant addiction, followed by an excruciatingly slow death, and there was no known - or unknown - antidote. Supposedly the drug had been totally eradicated from the humanx galaxy years before. At least that's what everyone thought. But somehow, mysteriously, that dreadful substance was back in circulation on Repler and threatening to wreak havoc throughout the known galaxy. Someone, somewhere was secretly manufacturing Bloodhype, but nobody seemed to know where or who!". 5. Flinx in Flux - 324 pp, 1988 12th printing, ISBN 0345343638. "(When Flinx and Pip) found an unconscious young woman on a riverbank deep in the jungles of Alaspin, Flinx wasn't surprised. Nor was he shocked to learn that the woman, Clarity Held, was a brilliant scientist, abducted from a remote outpost on inhospitable Longtunnel by a group of fanatic assassins. Flinx could see no harm in returning Clarity to her base before continuing on his way, but he was tired of solving other people's problems. He had his own life to get back to. So he was unprepared for the emotional effect the beautiful Clarity had on him. But while Flinx fought to deal with his unexpected dilemma, the assassins were still at work. They would do anything to stop the research on Longtunnel and would kill anyone or anything that got in their way." 6. Mid-Flinx - 346 pp, 1996 2nd printing, ISBN 0345406443. "(An) evil rich man was out to kidnap the minidrag for his personal zoo, and Flinx and Pip were on the run again - this time into uncharted space, on a random course they hoped would foil their pursuers. They found more than they bargained for when they landed on Midworld, a verdant planet covered by an immense jungle, hosting an incredible variety of plant and animal life - all of it unknown and all of it deadly. And now they were in real trouble. Their hiding place was in danger of discovery, and their only hope lay with this bizarre and untamed planet - if it didn't kill them first!" 7. Reunion - 342 pp, 2002 1st printing, ISBN 0345418689. "Usiing his enhanced empathic abilities, Flinx finesses his way into a top-secret security installation on Earth. Once there, he bamboozles a sophisticated AI program into releasing classified information about the Meliorare Society, the sect of renegade eugenicists whose experiments with human beings had horrified the civilized universe more than twenty years ago. After all, as one of the few Meliorare experiments to survive, Flinx has a right to know about his past. Especially since his telepathic powers seem to be evolving. The question is, evolving into what? The excruciating headaches afflicting Flinx with increasing frequency make him wonder if he will be alive to find out." Interiors - most books have light to moderate browning to inside of covers, most books have minor to very light browning to pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exteriors - two books with some tiny corner creases, one book with one 1" corner crease, four books with some light spines creases, one book with light sun fading to spine colour, three books with light spine lean and one with very light spine lean, all books have very light edge wear, very light browning to some edges of text blocks.

9 Higley, Dahn D. O.P.P.: THE HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE FORCE.
Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..

284 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "Why was one of the Royal Navy's most daring frigate captains on trial for his life? How had a random meeting with another frigate in the broad Atlantic while commanding the escort of a West Indies convoy led directly to the trial? Southwick and Aitken and all of Ramage's stalwart officers thought their captain was doomed and his oldest friend, the young shipowner Sidney Yorke, had given up hope. The only thing left in doubt, apparently, was whether Ramage would face a firing squad on the quarterdeck (like Admiral Byng) or be hanged. Once again a Ramage was being made a victim: like his father before him, Admiral the Earl of Blazey, Ramage was on trial but the origins came not from the broadside that rippled across the Atlantic swell but on political tides of years earlier. Twelve post captains had heard the evidence on all the charges brought against Ramage by another captain under the stern Articles of Wa r. Would their verdict be the one the court's president expected?" Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, very light rubbing, a few wrinkles in laminate on spine.
