1 Ball, Edward. THE INVENTOR AND THE TYCOON: A GILDED AGE MURDER AND THE BIRTH OF MOVING PICTURES.
New York Doubleday 2013 0385525753 / 9780385525756 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
447 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he compelling saga of an artistic genius, a ruthless railroad tycoon, and a sordid crime of passion. In frontier California 130 years ago, English immigrant Eadweard Muybridge managed to capture time and play it back on a screen, inventing stop-motion photography and moving pictures, breakthrough technologies that ushered in our age of visual media. Bankrolling his endeavor was tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, who built the west half of the transcontinental railroad and personally drove in the last golden spike. Stanford's particular obsession was whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once, and with Muybridge he found an answer. But personal disaster overshadowed Muybridge's remarkable achievements. A visionary artist, and technically brilliant, he was also a murderer." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
2 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

HANCOCK., Hancock, Freddie and Nathan, David.
4 Hancock, Freddie and Nathan, David. HANCOCK.
Kimber, London, 1969.
191 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "(Tony Hancock) led a life fragmented by laughter and despair as he ceaselessly sought an unattainable truth in comedy until it ended in a dreary room in Australia with one final drink, one last handful of pills. But before that happened he created more laughter for more people than any other man of his generation. The search for the truth about this extraordinarily complex clown involves drawing on the memories and perceptions of writers like Alan Simpson and Ray Galton, who, in a sense, hewed the Half Hour Hancock out of the whole man, J.B. Priestley who put him, thinly disguised, into a novel, Phillip Oakes, who wrote him a screenplay, and Denis Norden who w rote material he convulsed audiences with for years. There are, too, the writer/performers like John Osborne, Spike Milligan and Eric Sykes, the comedians who knew him or worked with him like Harry Secombe, Joan Turner, Kenneth Williams and Grah a m Stark; showman Bernard Delfont; actress Sylvia Syms, his radio and television directors Dennis Main Wilson and Duncan Wood and scores of others of lesser fame but crucial importance in Hancock's life." Slight fading at top edge of spine, light w ri n kling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, a few very small closed tears, minor rubbing, slight fading to spine color. OUT OF SEASON: A TRAVELLER'S TALE OF A WINTER JOURNEY., Hughes, Spike.
5 Hughes, Spike. OUT OF SEASON: A TRAVELLER'S TALE OF A WINTER JOURNEY.
London Robert Hale 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good -
156 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "The term 'out of season' is purely relative, of course. The winter's journey which took Spike Hughes and his wife to Sicily and back, by way of Germany and Austria, was made at a time of year which, so far from being out of season, was at the very height of the seaons for their purpose: the study of famous Italian opera houses in full operatic cry, as it were. In the course of a journey of some 4,000 miles (they) found many things to delight them, not the least important being an atmosphere of leisure and an opportunity to stand and stare which can be achieved only out of season. So it was that by visiting in winter places which normally thrive as summer resorts he found time to learn many things which would 'come in useful' to anybody willing to profit from his experiences and likely to spend holidays in those places at a more conventional time of year. In the end, the difference between visiting Italy in winter was the difference between being fussed over and spoiled as a guest and being allowed to live one's own life without having to distinguish one day from another. And that, Spike Hughes believes, is the greatest luxury any form of travel can take." Scattered foxing marks on edges of textblock, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light browning on endpapers. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling and a few tiny tears, light rubbing, light soiling on rear panel, foxing on inside surface.
