ABORIGINAL MYTHS., Bozic, Sreten. In conjunction with Alan Marshall.
1 Bozic, Sreten. In conjunction with Alan Marshall. ABORIGINAL MYTHS.
Melbourne Gold Star 1972 0726001139 / 9780726001130 First Edition Very Good Very Good
143 pp, 8 5/8" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "Alan Marshall is called 'Gurawilla' or 'Song maker' by the natives of Arnhem Land. He and Sreten Bozic have studied the few remaining nomadic aboriginal tribes in Australia and have come to love and admire their culture. This book is the result of their knowledge of, and respect for, a race which had and still has vastly different - and perhaps superior - ideals from those of the white invaders who commandeered their lives and land. For, until the advent of the white man, the Aboriginals lived in complete accord with nature. Australian tribal society was uniquely a-materialistic and egalitarian, and was characterized by a rich ceremonial culture and religious life. It emphasised mystical communion with the environment rather than individual achievement and the glorification of human prowess. Human life was always considered to be part of the natural cycle and the happiness and gentleness of Aboriginal society indicates the worth of a traditional naturalistic culture. These myths, the foundation of Australia's ancient cultural past, must live again in their fulness. Perhaps this book may help such a rejuvenation and create just a little understanding." Small Christmas gift inscription on front pastedown, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

3 Courlander, Harold. A TREASURY OF AFRO-AMERICAN FOLKLORE: THE ORAL LITERTURE, TRADITIONS, RECOLLECTIONS, LEGENDS, TALES, SONGS, RELIGIOUS BELIEFS, CUSTOMS, SAYINGS, AND HUMOR OF PEOPLES OF AFRICAN DESCENT IN THE AMERICAS.
New York SMITHMARK 1996 0765197332 / 9780765197337 Very Good Near Fine Enrico Arno.
618 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w decorations by Enrico Arno, b&w photographs, musical notations. "(A) notable milestone in the collection and presentation of oral literature and traditions from black communities in the Western Hemisphere. It demonstrates the powerful cultural influence of Africa on this side of the Atlantic. (I)ncludes a wide array of orally transmitted traditions of the numerous, sometimes disparate, African-American cultures of the New World. Among these traditions are tales of scoundrels, heroes, rollicking adventures, friendship, and much more: songs, myths, myth-legends, epic-like narrations, and recollections of historical happenings. There are descriptions of cult life, around which many traditions and beliefs flow; of music and dance, which have an integral connection with traditional ways; and of the social scene in places where Africans and Europeans, or white and black ideas intermingled and became Afro-American. (This book) perceives the interconnections of cultural inheritances throughout the Afro-American region and the local divergences as well. Early sections of the book survey the traditions and oral literature of Spanish, French, and English-speaking islands of the Caribbean, and of areas of Central and South America inhabited by people of African descent. There follows an extensive section devoted to the tales, beliefs, recollections, songs, religious epics, and a wide variety of oral creations of blacks in the United States. The Appendixes include a number of African stories and descriptions that point up the impact of African traditions on the cultures of Afro-America. Very light browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

New York Del Rey / Ballantine Very Good Darrell K. Sweet (1-4), cover art.
Seven of the first eight books of the 'Pip and Flinx' series - 6 7/8" H. ***Please note: "For Love of Mother-Not" is not included in this grouping - it would be book 1 or book 5, depending on whether you are reading in publication or chronological order.*** 1. Tar-Aiym Krang - 251 pp, 1983 8th printing, ISBN 034530280X. "The planet (Moth) attracted unwary travelers, hardened space-sailors, and merchant buccaneers - a teeming, constantly shifting horde that provided a comfortable income for certain quick-witted fellows like Flinx and his pet flying-snake Pip. With his odd talents, the pickings were easy enough so that Flinx did not have to be dishonest - most of the time. In fact, it hardly seemed dishonest at all to steal a starmap from a dead body that didn't really need it anymore. But Flinx wasn't quite smart enough. He should have wondered why the body was dead!" 2. Orphan Star - 234 pp, 1977 20th printing, ISBN 0345324498. "His birth had been shrouded in mystery, and all Flinx knew of himself was that he'd been abandoned by those who had spawned him. Raised by Mother Mastiff in the marketplace of Drallar, Flinx eventually discovered that his unknown parents had bequeathed to him a curious legacy - a legacy of extraordinary mental powers that were both an incalculable asset and a most dangerous liability. (It) would lead him - and his potent protector, the minidrag Pip - into the clutches of one of the most depraved and powerful men in the galaxy - on to a harrowing search for the truth about his birth - and out of one world into another on his most dangerous adventure ever." 3. End of the Matter - 246 pp, 1987 7th printing, ISBN 0345334655. "Flinx set out for Alaspin, the ruggedly primitive homeplanet of his flying snake. There he hoped to find the giant man with the gold earring who somehow held the key to Flinx's mysterious past and to the strange powers he possessed. Chasing down his heritage was trouble enough, but Flinx didn't know what real trouble was until he realized that the Qwarm - a deadly assassin squad - were three steps behind him with a contract to kill." 4. Bloodhype - 249 pp, 1977 2nd printing, ISBN 0345258452150. "Bloodhype was the most dangerous drug in the galaxy. It caused instant addiction, followed by an excruciatingly slow death, and there was no known - or unknown - antidote. Supposedly the drug had been totally eradicated from the humanx galaxy years before. At least that's what everyone thought. But somehow, mysteriously, that dreadful substance was back in circulation on Repler and threatening to wreak havoc throughout the known galaxy. Someone, somewhere was secretly manufacturing Bloodhype, but nobody seemed to know where or who!". 5. Flinx in Flux - 324 pp, 1988 12th printing, ISBN 0345343638. "(When Flinx and Pip) found an unconscious young woman on a riverbank deep in the jungles of Alaspin, Flinx wasn't surprised. Nor was he shocked to learn that the woman, Clarity Held, was a brilliant scientist, abducted from a remote outpost on inhospitable Longtunnel by a group of fanatic assassins. Flinx could see no harm in returning Clarity to her base before continuing on his way, but he was tired of solving other people's problems. He had his own life to get back to. So he was unprepared for the emotional effect the beautiful Clarity had on him. But while Flinx fought to deal with his unexpected dilemma, the assassins were still at work. They would do anything to stop the research on Longtunnel and would kill anyone or anything that got in their way." 6. Mid-Flinx - 346 pp, 1996 2nd printing, ISBN 0345406443. "(An) evil rich man was out to kidnap the minidrag for his personal zoo, and Flinx and Pip were on the run again - this time into uncharted space, on a random course they hoped would foil their pursuers. They found more than they bargained for when they landed on Midworld, a verdant planet covered by an immense jungle, hosting an incredible variety of plant and animal life - all of it unknown and all of it deadly. And now they were in real trouble. Their hiding place was in danger of discovery, and their only hope lay with this bizarre and untamed planet - if it didn't kill them first!" 7. Reunion - 342 pp, 2002 1st printing, ISBN 0345418689. "Usiing his enhanced empathic abilities, Flinx finesses his way into a top-secret security installation on Earth. Once there, he bamboozles a sophisticated AI program into releasing classified information about the Meliorare Society, the sect of renegade eugenicists whose experiments with human beings had horrified the civilized universe more than twenty years ago. After all, as one of the few Meliorare experiments to survive, Flinx has a right to know about his past. Especially since his telepathic powers seem to be evolving. The question is, evolving into what? The excruciating headaches afflicting Flinx with increasing frequency make him wonder if he will be alive to find out." Interiors - most books have light to moderate browning to inside of covers, most books have minor to very light browning to pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. 176 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Judaism, has flourished for millennia in a myriad of environments; each has contributed something to the Jewish tradition. Far from being a religion ossified in the world of the Bible; it has produced countless legends and stories, built up on Bible inspiration but reflecting the ideas of the cultures within which they emerged. (This book) explores the core of the Jewish faith by retelling the stories made up and told by Jews throughout the world. The author develops essential ideas of Judaism, including the creation of the universe, the history of man, the history of Israel and the future of Israel. He retells the familiar Biblical stories surrounding the great Biblical personalities such as Abraham, Moses and Elijah. He then goes on to show how their ideas and their characters were developed in the legends and folklore surrounding the Torah, and elaborated throughout the rabbinical tradition. With its great variety of stories told in clear and simple style, written for Jew and Gentile alike, (it) provides a fascinating insight into the wealth and vitality of Judaism." 9 Horwood, Harold. Foreword by Farley Mowat. DANCING ON THE SHORE: A CELEBRATION OF LIFE AT ANNAPOLIS BASIN.
Toronto Douglas Gibson / McClelland and Stewart 1987 0771042027 / 9780771042027 First Edition Very Good Very Good G. Brender a Brandis.
219 pp, 8 3/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "As (Horwood) describes the land around his home the beauty of his prose is breathtaking, whether he is writing about finches, stars, vegetables, seaweed, beech trees, ponds, garter snakes, or squirrels hiding cookies all over the house. No city-dweller will be able to read this book without a sigh of envy at the life the author and his family have created in 'one of the truly magical places on the earth'. But (it) is much more than just a book about nature described by an expert. For Harold Horwood's detailed observations lead on to a more philosophical plane. The discovery of earthworms knotted to preserve moisture causes him to speculate on DNA and how worms 'remember'. A description of blue herons fencing in a courtship battle, where their razor-sharp bills inflict no damage, leads to the subject of war. These and similar themes are provocative, challenging, and so powerfully written that (his) message has already reduced some audiences to tears." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has very light rubbing, light wrinkling - mianly at top/bottom of spine a flap-folds.

ALL ELEVATIONS UNKNOWN: AN ADVENTURE IN THE HEART OF BORNEO., Lightner, Sam, Jr.
12 Lightner, Sam, Jr. ALL ELEVATIONS UNKNOWN: AN ADVENTURE IN THE HEART OF BORNEO.
New York Broadway Books 2001 0767907566 / 9780767907569 First Edition Fine Very Good+
239 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. "In the spring of 1999, armed with little more than a descriptiion from a book and a map labeled 'all elevations unknown', Sam Lightner and his German rock-climbing buddy, Volker, found themselves deep in the jungles of Borneo on a mission to climb a mountain that was only rumored to exist. They had only their climbing expertise to rely on and a copy of a little-known book titled 'World Within', written by Major Tom Harrisson, a British World War II soldier who had been one of the first white men ever to explore the interior jungles of the island and interact with its native peoples. He had also constructed one of the most daring and unusual campaigns in military history: In 1945, he had been assigned the near-impossible mission of parachuting blindly into the thick Borneo rain forests to unite the feuding native tribes - who then had a grisly habit of cutting off heads - against the Japanese in order to reclaim the island for the Allies. A captivating, utterly original combination of travel-adventure memoir and historical re-creation, (this book) charts Lightner's exhilarating, often harrowing quest to ascend the mountain Batu Lawi in the face of leeches, vipers, and sweat bees, and to keep his team together in one of the earth's most treacherous uncharted pockets. Along the way, (he) reconstructs a fascinating historical narrative that chronicles Tom Harrisson's adventures in Borneo during the war and illuminates an astonishing piece of forgotten World War II history. Rife with suspense and vivid detail, the two intertwining tales open up the island of Borneo, its people, and its history in a powerful, unforgettable way, and take adventure writing to new heights - ultimately the remarkable story of two adventures, separated by fifty years and united by one mountain." Dust jacket has some very light wrinkling along top edge, minor rubbing.
