PEOPLE FROM THE SKY: AINU TALES FROM NORTHERN JAPAN., Carpenter, Frances.
1 Carpenter, Frances. PEOPLE FROM THE SKY: AINU TALES FROM NORTHERN JAPAN.
Garden City, New York Doubleday 1972 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Betty Fraser.
107 pp, 9 7/16" H. B&w illustrations. "In the model Ainu village on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, Old Ekashi is one of the few storytellers who can remember the drama and excitement of ancient customs, legends and magic. Toko and Haruko beg their grandfather to repeat their favorite tales of Kamui, the Great-and-Important God, who sent lesser gods from the Sky Country to teach, protect and guide the Ainu people. Although Ekashi's eyes twinkle as he explains why the lark never flies very high, why the Ainu have no books and why the sparrow has only one dark spot on her beak, he doest not reveal just how much of his fabulous accounts of myth and folklore he really believes." Contents; People from the Sky; A-E-Oina, the Demon, and the Tattle-tale Dog; Animals from Heaven; "Good-by, Dear Little Bear God"; The Hungry Time; Yoshi-Tsuni, Brave Warrior from Japan; The Old Man on the Mountain; The Frog's Tattoo; The Mad Dancers of Upo-Pou-Shi; The One-Eyed Monster; Fox Magic; Pan'ambe and Pen'ambe; The Bats of Ru-Pe-Shi-Pi; The Golden Mare; Flying Sword; Two Terrible Fish; The "Little People". 3" line of glue residue on free front endpaper, browning on inside hinges. IN GREAT WATERS: THE EPIC STORY OF THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC., Dunmore, Spencer.
2 Dunmore, Spencer. IN GREAT WATERS: THE EPIC STORY OF THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC.
McClelland & Stewart, (Toronto, 1999), Ist printing.
342 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771029292 B&w photographs. "It was probably the most important battle of the Second World War. The German attempt to stem the vital trans-Atlantic flow of men and supplies to Britian would cost the Allies more than 2,600 merchant ships, 30,000 merchant seamen's lives, 5,000 aircrew, and about 2,500 aircraft. The battle ranged across the ocean: from the waters of the St. Lawrence, throught the treacherous open sea of the North Atlantic, to the fjords of Norway and the Bay of Biscay. Spencer Dunmore traces the complete history of the Battle of the Atlantic, giving equal time to all aspects of the conflict: in the air, on the water, and below its surface...tells the story from the perspective of both sides, and includes the first-hand accounts of individual participants, both Allied and German..." TIAN WEN: A CHINESE BOOK OF ORIGINS., Field, Stephen, translator. Calligraphy by T.C. Ma.
3 Field, Stephen, translator. Calligraphy by T.C. Ma. TIAN WEN: A CHINESE BOOK OF ORIGINS.
New Directions, New York, 1986, first edition.
123 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0811210103 "Relatively unknown in the West, (this book) is a fascinating, though often baffling, archaic collection of 186 'questions' about the origins of life and the meaning of a wide vari ety of happenings startling and mundane, earthly and celestial. Because the poem has no single narrative thread, the most informed speculation posits group authorship by a number of roving Taoist scholars, each contributing riddles about t h e h i s t o r y and legends of his own province as well as ironically posed inquiries into the nature of the universe. The enigmatic and sometimes Sphinxlike conundrums may have been originally intended for debate - to give the popular and promi ne nt di al ec ti ci an s of over 2,300 years ago a tool for honing their convoluted responses. But however the poem took on its present shape and content, it remains the single most comprehensive catalogue of ancient Chinese mythology and pre-Imp eri al l ege nd in exi ste nce . This translation....combines sound scholarship with an artful grace to produce the 186 questions in couplets that both tease and enchant. In addition to a historical introduction that clearly explains what is known and no t know n a bou t th e po em, Field provides extensive notes to help the English-speaking reader understand the basic Chinese myths alluded to in the questions." The poem is presented in Chinese 'li-shi' script opposite the English text. P revio us o wn er's chop (st amp p n hal f-ti tle page, tiny bump to top edge of both boards. Dust jacket is price clipped, minor rubbing. Very Good/Very Good

DUNKIRK: THE NECESSARY MYTH., Harman, Nicholas.
4 Harman, Nicholas. DUNKIRK: THE NECESSARY MYTH.
Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1980.
271 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 034024299X B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "(The author), in this long, close and hard look at one of the events which shaped the course of the war, cogently argues that if the ful l truth had been known at the time, the nation's exultation at its deliverance would have been greatly dimmed; and that the Dunkirk spirit, which helped to sustain the British people through five more hard years of war was to a considerable e x t e n t b ased on myth; necessary myth, which was eagerly embraced by a nation under the spell of Churchill's oratory. For while the soldiers, or most of them, displayed fortitude, there was deception and trickery, conflict and contradictory ord er s at t he po litical and high command level. It can be argued that in war it is sometimes necessary to deceive allies as well as enemies. The reader will be able to judge for himself the morality of actions taken by desperate men as catastrop he lo ome d e ver nea rer. Nicholas Harman scrutinises the Dunkirk affair at all its levels. He sees it through the eyes of Cabinet ministers and military commanders; from the naval angle and from the viewpoint of those who manned the 'little shi ps' ; a nd h e ha s re s earc hed a wealth of revealing anecdote about the confused, exhausted soldiers who made the long retreat to the port, and who, on arrival in Britain, were welcomed as if they had been conquerors." Large gift inscription on free fro nt en d pap er, r em ainde r mark on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, very light rubbing. Very Good/Very Good

MARGARET - A WOMAN OF CONFLICT., James, Paul.
5 James, Paul. MARGARET - A WOMAN OF CONFLICT.
Sidgwick & Jackson, London, 1990, first edition.
202 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0283999047 B&w photographs. "Upon becoming the first memeber of the royal family to appear on 'Desert Island Discs', Princess Margaret told broadcaster Roy Plomley that she had be 'mi sreported and misrepresented since the age of seventeen'. Despite the fact that both her public and private life is frequently reported with relish and often distorted by the tabloid press, we know surprisingly little about the Queen's only s i s t e r , who has so often been regarded as the black sheep of the royal circle. To coincide with Princess Margaret's sixtieth birthday, expert royal commentator Paul James has written a thoroughgoing and impartial biographical study of the c o nt ro ve rs ia l Pr incess. He illustrates her struggles between personal desire and public duty, the opposition she faced in her relationship with Peter Townsend, the pressures of marriage to a non-royal which led to divorce, and the love-hate re lat ion shi p w hic h she has formed with the media, together with her fight for her individuality within the confines of the royal family. (This book) will provide the reader with a compelling insight into the public and private worlds of one o f t he s tron gest and mos t colo urful characters in the royal family, looking back over a life which has contained more than its fair share of conflict and turmoil." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at to p/bo ttom of sp ine a nd fl ap-fo ld s, fa ding to color on spine and rear hinge/rear top edge areas - lettering still very legible on spine. Arms and Armour, London, 1983.
128 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0853685843 "(P)rovides a detailed analysis of the new generations of Soviet surface warships - from the Kynda class guided missile carriers of the 1960s to the new nuclear-powered battl ecruiser 'Kirov'. It provides a refreshing, alternative view to the usual over-reactive reading of Soviet naval intentions. Recent Soviet naval developments are viewed here not as an attempt to win control of the sea, but as a persistent drive t o counter western sea-power as a force capable of threatening Soviet territory. --- The major classes of Soviet surface ships covered are Kynda, Kashin, Kresta I, Moskva, Kresta II, Krivak, Kara, Kiev, Kirov and the new destroyers 'Sovremenny' a n d 'U d aloy', each of which has a chapter devoted to it. Complete details of each class are given including design, construction, service career, propulsion, weapons and radar. The strategic thinking behind each new concept is examined, the desi gn s hor tc omings of each type discussed, and their operational capabilities assessed. In addition to over 150 superb b&w photographs, line drawings of each class are provided with details of fittings and armament. There are also over 30 tables of shi p sp eci fications, missiles, guns and aircraft carried by each class. IT'S OVER - IT'S BEGINNING., Watt, F.W.
10 Watt, F.W. IT'S OVER - IT'S BEGINNING.
Porcupine's Quill, Erin, Ontario, 1986.
107 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), soft cover. ISBN 0889840946 "The voice of these poems is distinctive. It can be heard and understood at once. It speaks with an unusual combination of rural candour and urban sophistication. It is tempered by a poignant awareness of seasonal dyings and renewals, but also by a wry recognition of human frailties, social deceptions and self-deceptions, the intensities and brevities of love - and by glimpses of the darker aspects of modern history that have touched the consciousness of us all. The book opens on a life pausing at mid-point: taking the measure of its losses and gains in a strongly-felt country scene that is bracing and nourishing. It then moves backwards in time and outwards in space to e x p l o r e t he span of places, people and experiences that have led up to this situtation. Each moment, each poem, can be taken on its own, or as part of a larger story. These are poems which hide their craft, while inviting the reader to ent er d ir ec tl y in t o the thoughtful meditations, the painful reassessments, the journeys and discoveries which the poet's imagination has recreated." Interior - Christmas gift inscription on first page, otherwise clean and tight with no other ow ner shi p m ark s. E xte ri or - light fading to spine and hinges, minor rubbing. Very Good
