"This diary is reproduced exactly as written at the time of the events it records in France, with the exception of some omissions and a f ew minor alterations necessary in the interests of security...Its sole interest rests in the simple sequence of entries that accumulate and combine finally to illustrate the immeasurable complications and infinite reactions of the short campa i g n i n France as jotted down by an independent witness. The diary may, perhaps, help readers grasp even more clearly than they do already from following events in the Press, the accumulation of weight, both political and military, that piled u p du ri n g th e first phase of this universal warfare to handicap the commanders of the British Expeditionary Force and the British Air Forces in France." 2 Baker, Betty / Moote & Hodgson, Orangeville, Ontario. 1968 COOKING CLUB CALENDAR - ADVERTISING PIECE FOR MOOTE & HODGSON LIMITED, ORANGEVILLE, ONTARIO.
1967 Soft Cover Very Good+
Approx. 11 3/8" H x 8" W. This calendar was an advertising piece for Moote & Hodgson Limited of Orangeville, Ontario. When the 'gold' pencil that slots into the loop is removed, the pages can be taken out and re-ordered (the instructions suggest that each finished month be placed at the back of the calendar in sequence). The twelve sheets for the months each form a pocket at the bottom (for storing receipts, recipes, notes, etc.) and have a recipe illustrated with a sepiatone photograph and a menu on the front. On the reverse are additional recipes following that month's theme and a tip from Betty Baker. The calendar cover consists of a folded sheet (just over 6 1/2" H at the front) with a pasted on colour picture of a fisherman and the company details on the front. The full-sized rear section has a form for filling in the "Household Budget" on the inside (unused) and information on "Home Freezing - Fruits and Vegetables" on the reverse. The monthly recipe themes are: January - Sandwiches Supreme; February - Soup So Warm; March - Fish 'n' Things; April - Meat Miracles; May - Good ol' Cookie; June - Delectable Vegetables; July - Dessert Magic; August - Beverage Coolers; September - Countdown on Coffee Cakes; October - Thanksgiving Delights; November - Fashionable Meat Dishes; December - Salads Superb. What Mr Durrell calls his 'quincunx' can now b e seen emerging as an Avignon quintet, more and more recognizably linked with the themes and characters of 'The Alexandria Quartet'. In 'Sebastian' the locale is principally Geneva, picking up from the close of 'Constance', and as the sto r y u n f o l d s what were enigmas become revelations, and what seemed brilliant patchwork becomes a cunning woven tapestry. The relationship of Constance and Affad is under threat, and they realize they are heading for a fearful crisis; while h er p r of es si on al p ra ctice as a clinical psychiatrist involves her in the patient healing of an autistic child = her lover's son - and the handling of a dangerous criminal psychopath. THE SECRET MEANING OF THINGS., Ferlinghetti, Lawrence.
11 Ferlinghetti, Lawrence. THE SECRET MEANING OF THINGS.
New York New Directions 1968 Third Printing Soft Cover Good Signed by Author
48 pp, 7 15/16" H. Signed on half title page: "Ferlinghetti". "(B)rings together six long poems with a certain continuity and progression of vision. The first five poems form a related sequence in which the poet sees 'all too clearly'. In 'Assassination Raga' the 'glass' through which the poet sees darkly is the TV tube, and it was first read on the night of Robert Kennedy's funeral at a mammoth poetry reading in Nourse Auditorium, San Francisco. 'Bickford's Buddha' is a mediation on being afflicted with what the poet calls 'observation fever' - the ultimate vision being that of the 'all-seeing' Buddha. 'All too Clearly' finds a surreal meaning of things in flight. 'Through the Looking Glass' is also an in-flight poem, beginning with an actual flight aboard a commercial airliner and progressing through LSD vision to a final flash of how through everything 'Shiva advances with a broken arm'. 'After the Cries of Birds' is a logical opening-out of that vision into a wide-angle prophecy of the future of the world. 'Moscow in the Wilderness, Segovia in the Snow' is a separate long poem resulting from Ferlinghetti's trip across Russia and Siberia in the Winter of 1967." Interior - tiny bump at top corner of pages, one or two small light stains on inside of rear cover, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - light browning to edges of text block and to edges of rear cover, an area of light liquid marks on rear cover, very light edge wear, small crease at bottom corner of front cover.

Prince Kahun and Prince Gatsack were busily fighting each other for the right to ascend the throne. And far away in the deserted land of Semeryan, the wizard Wizenbeak was busy. His water-finding dance was finished, and the dry land would soon be fertile again. Now he was building housing and a fort for the colonists he had brought. Nothing could have seemed more peaceful. But there was no peace. Wizenbeak stood accused of being a dangerous wizard, and the Witchfinders had him marked as their target. One army was sent against him and a larger one was on the way. Against that might, Wizenbeak had only a tiny force. Wizenbeak's men prepared - as, in his own way, did Wizenbeak..." 13 Hennessey, Thomas. A HISTORY OF NORTHERN IRELAND, 1920-1996.
New York St. Martin's Press 1997 0312211120 / 9780312211127 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
347 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). Book club edition. "Founded upon the partition of Ireland in 1920, Northern Ireland experienced fifty years of nervous peace under the rule of a devolved government in Belfast. This government was representative only of the majority Protestant unionist community while the Catholic minority sought union with the rest of the island. The Protestant fortress held firm until the emergence of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Movement in the late 1960s, following which the province subsided into the civil unrest widely known as 'the Troubles'. Hennessey's even-handed history attempts to understand the reasons for the long history of communal division, mutual suspicion, Catholic alienation, and Protestant siege mentality. It traces the sequence of events, decade by decade, in the history of the troubled province. The great value of the book, however, is in providing an overview of events since the outbreak of the Troubles up to and including the present uncertain peace process. It is the first comprehensive history of Northern Ireland for over fifteen years and brings a contemporary perspective to historical events, taking account of the scholarship which has developed in Northern Ireland studies over the last twenty years." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, very light edge wrinkling.

Guild, London, (1985), Book Club Associates.
160 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photos, drawings, plans. "...(the author) uses personal experience to show that the creation of a consistent layout, far from being constricting, is, in fact, the most rewarding form of railway modelling. Taking the popular Settle and Carlisle line as his example, the author describes his search for a modelling philosophy, the need for discrimmination and to establish objectives, and how to undertake the necessary research. The research becomes as important and as fascinating as the modelling itself, and the end result is far more satisfying to the modeller and onlooker alike." Spells don't seem as potent, and there's been a general decline in quality of wizards practicing the craft. But when the Wizards' Guild votes to open its meetings to alchemists - as far as Kedrigern is concerned, that's the last straw. Leaving the Guild meeting in a snit, Kedrigern - master magician and purveyor of counterspells - bids adieu to his conjuring comrades to pursue a life of quiet contemplation and study. However, he soon finds just how lonely such a life can be - even with a helpful house-troll named Spot for company. What's a 160-year-old bachelor to do? The social scene on Silent Thunder Mountain is the pits. And Kedrigern is decidedly too young to even contemplate marriage - by wizardly standards, of course. It's not until after much though that our humble hero resolves himself to marriage...and so begins his quest for a bride. But will Kedrigern rush into wedlock with the first enchanted princess who speaks up?" Interiors - pages browning lightly, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks, Exteriors - light edge wear, a few very small corner creases, tiny area of dis-coloration on top of textblock of book 3, spines flat with faint creases on books 4 & 5.
