9 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.

His great contribution to succeeding gener ations sprang from his awareness that the struggle in every age is not primarily in the realm of the physical and material. The ultimate battle is for the whole man. His life was devoted to achieving right thinking about the almost mystic a l c o n n e c tion between body, mind and spirit. 20 Morton, W.L., edited and with introduction by. Assisted by Vera K. Fast. Preface (and based on materials provided by) R.D. Symons. (Monica Storrs.) GOD'S GALLOPING GIRL: THE PEACE RIVER DIARIES OF MONICA STORRS, 1929-1931.
University of British Columbia Press, Vancouver, (1984), reprint.
307 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. B&w photos, drawing, map. "What brough Monica Storrs to embark on a wilderness life in the depressed thirties amidst the hardships of B.C.'s Peace River country - the last North American frontier?...A refined woman of 41, the delicately reared daughter of the dean of Rochester Cathedral, she was following a family tradition in seeking missionary work in rough and alien surroundings. Her mission was the settlers and the frontier. She came to teach Sunday School and the traditions of guiding and scouting to tough, work-hardened country children. She rode horseback to bring the gospel to the families of isolated farmers and trappers. She welcomed the poor and hungry to her home - both the god-fearing and the godless. And she was, for the most part, welcome in theirs...Overcoming early fears of failure and rejection, she learned to subdue the prejudices of her moral and social upbringing and at last won acceptance and a permanent place in the heart of the north..." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, very light rubbing, spine flat and uncreased. Very Good
