New York Counterpoint 2007 158243154X / 9781582431543 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+
270 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "After spending the greater part of a decade traveling around the island of Newfoundland, at 'the edge of North America', beloved nature writer and host of an NPR radio series Robert Finch chronicles the people, geography, and wildlife of this remote and lovely place. From the shear cliffs of Cape Spear overlooking the Atlantic, the beaches of Sandy Cove (about eight miles by road from Squid Tickle), the steep streets of St. John's, and the moss-covered tundra of the southern coast, Finch carefully collects the intimate stories of birds and moose and foxes - and the people who share their space. He evokes an untrammeled landscape of raw beauty even as he tells a tale of economic hardship, with the local cod fisheries deplete and very little industry to replace it. Finch's ear is finely attuned to the vernaclar of Newfoundlander's stories; he revels in the particular cadences and unexpected movement of their tales. With a boundless curiosity, a profound appreciation for the beauty of everyday life and prose as hospitable and full of good humor as the people he encounters, Finch brings alive a wide array of characters - fishermen, hunters and hitchhikers, newcomers and old timers - and an island tucked between provinces, languages, and cultures, a land of ancient hardship and stirring beauty." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

168 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "...the autobiography of one of the Royal Air Force's most colourful characters. Sandy Johnstone began flying in the Auxiliary Air Force and later flew as a commercial pilot until he was called up for Active Service in 1939. He took command of a Spitfire squadron in July 1940 and was credited with eight confirmed 'kills' and four probables during the Battle of Britain. He later led a Wing of Spitfires during the Siege of Malta (1942/3). In 1944 he was involved in the planning of Operation Overlord and subsequent operations of the fighter squadrons engaged in D-Day operations, joining General Eisenhower's staff in Normandy five weeks later. Sandy Johnstone's post-war career was equally varied and in his book he recalls his experience as an Air Attache, founder of the Royal Malayan Air Force, Commander of the Commonwealth Air Forces when he saw action in Borneo and as Air Officer, Scotland and Northern Ireland, during which time he also held a number of important N.A.T.O. commands..." 7 Johnstone, Sandy, Air Vice-Marshal. (Alexander) ENEMY IN THE SKY: MY 1940 DIARY.
San Rafael, California Presidio 1979 0891410864 / 9780891410867 Very Good+ Very Good
191 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "In 1940 Great Britain faced one of the most critical periods in its history when Germany launched its air power across the English Channel. For a few nightmarish weeks the fate of the nation lay in the hands of its fighter pilots, 'Churchill's Few'. During those pivotal days Sandy Johnstone commanded the 602nd (City of Glasgow) Squadron stationed at Westhampnett. He kept a detailed diary of the squadron's activities. Flying their Spitfires, the pilots of the 602nd pitted themselves against the German threat, fighting for control of the airspace over their homeland. Johnstone himself was credited with eight kills and four probables. Eventually the Battle of Britain was won. The 602nd Squadron's outstanding role in the victory, clearing the skies of enemy aircraft, is brilliantly brought to life again through the pages of this remarkable diary." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny light scuff on front board, very light edge wear, slight browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor soiling, one small edge tear - taped, slight browning on spine.

"(A) dark and disturbing look at the original outlaw motorcycle gang - and the changes that have reshaped the old-boy network. The Hell's Angels Moto rcycle Club - the most dominant and most feared of all motorcycles gangs - is trading in its bikes, brotherhood and booze for Jaguars, Wittnauers and business suits. The Hell's Angels are now one of the most powerful underground corporate o r g a n i z a t ions - rivalling even the Mafia. But this new direction has come with no small sparing of blood. Territorial wars and retaliatory violence now dominate club activity as chapters vie for the lucrative profits of drug trafficking and p ro st it ut io n. Prolific murder within the club - and the ever-present threat of death - has taken its toll on club morale and camaraderie. Haunted by fear, some members have sought police protection in return for testimony against fellow Ange ls. T he Hel l's An gel s are changing their image. Robert Hale, London, 1965, first edition.
190 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, maps. "Eric Whelpton, who has been living in, or wandering through, Italy for a large part of his life, believes that even Venice itself, outside the tourist area, still remains to be discovered. To the north-east and to the south of Venice there stretch long sandy beaches where the sea is clear and buoyant. Further along the plain, within a few miles of Trieste, are rocky bays and pineclad slopes. To the south, outside the bo undaries of Venetia, there are the popular resorts of Rimini and Cattolica; but on the way there is Ravenna with its works of art from a civilization that existed thirteen centuries ago. Inland again is Mantua, one of the loveliest of art c i t i e s a n d probably the least known. To the north is Verona, a town of Palladian palaces; and Asolo, built by a queen of Cyprus, and beloved of the Brownings. Lake Garda is described too, and the Dolomites, the rose-coloured mountains that g ua rd t he n o rt h- eastern frontiers of Italy. Eric Whelpton can be relied upon to give practical advice to would-be travellers to Venice and its delightful surroundings, and he may even tempt the armchair traveller to book a passage to this ci ty of can als ."
