"Nothing captures the spirit of the Old West better than the jaunty tunes and classic ballads the cowboys and settlers sang, songs richly represented in this visually stunning volume. Panoramic in scope, the 45 songs, coupled with works of art from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming, chronicle the stirring saga of westward expansion and reflect every facet of life during one of the most exciting periods in our nation's history. The lore of the West intrigued many artists, and the works featured include paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, and N.C. Wyeth, as well as a myriad of fascinating artifacts: saddles, spurs, guns, guitars, a stagecoach ticket, a Navajo blanket, and other objects that provide a vivid picture of life in the West. A lively and intriguing text further illuminates this bygone world, exploring the history of the songs, their lyrics, the accompanying art, and the development of the West. The music, arranged for beginning to intermediate musicians and accompanied by chords for the guitar or banjo, is suitable for piano, organ, violin, or recorder." Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1986 0771013396 / 9780771013393 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
336 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w maps. "On a chill Easter Monday in 1917, with a blizzard blowing in their faces, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in France did what neither the British nor the French armies had been able to do in more than two years of fighting. They seized and held the best-defended German bastion on the Western Front - a muddy scarp known as the Vimy Ridge. The French, who had lost 150,000 men trying to take the ridge, didn't believe it could be done. Nor did the Germans; even the British were skeptical. But the Canadians triumphed. They went over the top at dawn; by lunch time, most of the ridge was in their hands - at a cost of only ten thousand casualties. How could an army of civilians from a nation without a military tradition secure the first enduring Imperial victory in thirty-two months of warfare? The answer, as Pierre Berton makes vividly clear in his haunting account, was precisely that these men were civilians, with flexible minds unfettered by military rules." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has very light edgewear/wrinkling.

8 Betcherman, Lita-Rose. THE LITTLE BAND: THE CLASHES BETWEEN THE COMMUNISTS AND THE POLITICAL AND LEGAL ESTABLISHMENT IN CANADA, 1928-1932.
Ottawa Deneau 0888790716 / 9780888790712 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three very small corner bumps. Dust hacket has very light edge wear and wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge, tiny scuffs on rear flap-fold.

Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." A POCKETFUL OF YEARS. ANOTHER MRS KINGI BOOK., Cleary, Frances.
13 Cleary, Frances. A POCKETFUL OF YEARS. ANOTHER MRS KINGI BOOK.
Collins, Auckland, New Zealand, 1975, first edition.
166 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Mrs Kingi, the beloved heroine of 'This Mrs Kingi', continues her story in this delightful sequel. As she looks back on her seventy years in the small Bay of Islands area (New Zealand) that has been her home - and that of her family - for generations, Mrs Kingi ponders on the changes she has seen. Typical of these is the family of her daughter Lizzie and husband Sam. Flash and Gordon, the twins born at the end of the earlier book, are now stu rdy youngsters. Les, the oldest and Mrs Kingi's secret favourite, is away at school on a scholarship, with his future assured; and the other children are normal and healthy. Only Gus is a problem, and his grandmother worries that he may t u r n o u t t o be a bad Maori if his talent for carving and drawing is not encouraged. That is Mrs Kingi's strength, and her weakness: that she cares about everybody and everything in her immediate vicinity, from her friend Mrs Wiki's dog to the s ta te of t he wo rld in general. But there is one thing she can and does do, this 'wrinkled-up old Maori woman of no importance', as she calls herself. When faced with an agonising decision under the pressure of other people, Mrs Kingi accep ts wha t s h e f eel s a r e h er responsbilities - not only to her close family, but to all her people. The book ends on a triumphant note, as the whole district celebrates Mrs Kingi's seventieth birthday and, on the happiest day of her life, youn g G us g ives h er t he b est gi ft o f all." Light edge wear, book slightly cocked, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three tiny corner creases. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, ligh t fa ding to sp ine colo r. V ery Goo d/Ver y Good
