5 Arnup, John D. MIDDLETON: THE BELOVED JUDGE.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1988 0771007959 First Edition Very Good Very Good
202 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of Ontario's and Canada's greatest judges, William Edward Middleton (1860-1948), who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario for thirty-three years, twenty-two of them as an appellate judge. At a time when a number of Supreme Court justices were belligerent to counsel and irascible toward their brother judges, Mr. Justice Middleton set a high standard of courtesy and civility that has carried on to the present day. Because (he) never sought attention or encouraged controversy, his contributions have been known heretofore only in legal circles. Yet here is a man whose written judgments are still cited fifty, sixty, even seventy years later, the judge who sat on 'the Great Stork Derby' case of the 1930s, and who decided which of the two litigious Kellogg brothers could sell his corn flakes in Canada. In addition, Middleton was a renowned botanist and legal scholar. The prison inmates of his Bible class knew him better and appreciated his exemplary character far more than the average citizen. (This book) is rich with anecdotage and presents important legal cases in a manner the general reader can understand and appreciate." Minor old tape residue at top/bottom edges of free endpapers, small corner crease on page 7, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small ink mark on bottomm edge of both boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one or two very tiny edge tears, minor rubbing.

AFGHAN WARS AND THE NORTH-WEST FRONTIER, 1839-1947., Barthorp, Michael.
6 Barthorp, Michael. AFGHAN WARS AND THE NORTH-WEST FRONTIER, 1839-1947.
Cassell, (London, 2002), reprint.
184 pp, large 8vo (9 13/16" H), laminated, flexible covers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "British forces in India were in almost constant battle with Afghan hill tribes, the most implacable guerilla fighter in history. 'Frontier Warfare' was one of the most important tasks for the British army in India. It was a strange war fought to its own rules. Prisoners were seldom taken by either side. Over the years, the British introduced armoured vehicles and aircraft, but the key features of warfare on the Afghan frontier remained the same from Victorian times to World War II and the British withdrawal from the sub-continent in 1947. From the army immortalized by Kipling to the end of the British Empire in India, Michael Barthorp reveals how the British dealt with Afghanistan." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor bump at corners of covers, very small bumps along bottom edges o f c overs and one on fore-edge of rear covers, specks of light color offset on rear cover - probably from another book. VIMY., Berton, Pierre.
8 Berton, Pierre. VIMY.
Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1986 0771013396 / 9780771013393 First Printing Very Good+ Very Good
336 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w maps. "On a chill Easter Monday in 1917, with a blizzard blowing in their faces, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in France did what neither the British nor the French armies had been able to do in more than two years of fighting. They seized and held the best-defended German bastion on the Western Front - a muddy scarp known as the Vimy Ridge. The French, who had lost 150,000 men trying to take the ridge, didn't believe it could be done. Nor did the Germans; even the British were skeptical. But the Canadians triumphed. They went over the top at dawn; by lunch time, most of the ridge was in their hands - at a cost of only ten thousand casualties. How could an army of civilians from a nation without a military tradition secure the first enduring Imperial victory in thirty-two months of warfare? The answer, as Pierre Berton makes vividly clear in his haunting account, was precisely that these men were civilians, with flexible minds unfettered by military rules." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has very light edgewear/wrinkling.

SHAKER COMMUNITIES, SHAKER LIVES., Brewer, Priscilla J.
9 Brewer, Priscilla J. SHAKER COMMUNITIES, SHAKER LIVES.
Hanover, NH University Press of New England 1986 0874513626 / 9780874513622 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good
273 pp, large 8vo (89 1/4" H). B&w photographs, tables. "Athough we know much about Shaker furniture, dance, textiles, and various artifacts, few books tell us about the Shakers as real people and the inner social workings of their sect. Who were the Shakers? What were their social, economic, and religious backgrounds? Why did they join this celibate, communal sect, and why did some leave while others stayed? What did they think of life inside the communities and the rapidly changing world outside? And, perhaps most important, when and why did the sect begin to decline, and how did Believers adjust to this decline? These are some of the questions Priscilla Brewer addresses in this engaging social history. Her highly readable general introduction to the Shakers challenges basic assumptions about the timing and reasons for the group's decline. Brewer studies the Shaker movement from its founding in 1774 to its last major public statement in 1904, restricting her work to the eleven Shaker communities in eastern New York and New England. (She) provides an inside look at Shaker life by recounting the group's social organization, the occupational roles of its members, the composition of its communities, and the operation of the Shaker hierarchy. Far from being a dry, sociological study, this book is filled with anecdotes and revealing stories related by the Shakers through the many writings they left behind." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny foxing mark on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, slight fading to spine color.

Stevens & Sons, London, 1951, first edition.
187 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. Presents "a view over the long and varied history of Gray's Inn from the Middle Ages till to-day. For the lover of London and the social historian, no less than for the lawyers, the f ascination of the Inns of Court is irresistible. But this is more than a story of an Inn of Court and its members, or even of its six centuries of change in the shape of our legal system and the ways of the lawyers at study, at work and at p l a y . H ere Gray's Inn, starting as a manor house in the fields outside London, grows and changes as the city reaches out to enclose it. It feels the impact of religious change and civil war. Tudor, Stuart, Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian L on do n gr ow up around it. The bombs of two wars devastate it. Yet through every transformation its continuity is unbroken. And the Author demonstrates the essential part which that continuity plays in safeguarding the conception of freedom un der th e rul e o f wa r."
