It may be anywhere you choose in the English countryside, because ' BB' has drawn a living picture of that sort of delightful old house among fields and woods, the ideal English home which thousands remember from their childhood or hope to have in that future for which they work and plan. The letters are w r i t t e n b y a countryman to a younger friend abroad and they describe the routine of country life throughout the months of the year as it engages an active man with a contemplative mind. They recount the discovery of the small signs of spri ng , th e de li gh t s of summer and long days spent in the open air, and the white beauty of the winter which the townsman hardly knows. Here then is a tranquil book designed for casual reading, calling up the very sights, sounds and smells of th e E ng lis h cou ntr ysi de . It is one of the most intimately observed of 'BB's' books, and one of the most endearing." Minor browning to pages, light browning to edges of textblock, two very small corner bumps. Harcourt, Brace, New York, 1941, second printing.
112 pp, 8vo (8 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "This is the unvarnished narrative of the adventures of Caroline and Eddie Bell, aged twelve and ten, who were among the first children sent from England to America in the summer of 1940. The man who asked them to write their own book said: 'Tell about the things you like and the things you don't like. Don't pull any punches. Americans can take it.' Americans can not only take it, but will love it. It is a gorgeous, high-spirited do c u m e nt. The impact of our daily routine, with its excitements and it disappointments too, seems just as diverting to us as it is to them." Ten miles from the shores of Burma, David suddenly heard his skipper say these chilling words: 'Dinghy! Dinghy! Prepare for ditching.' THE BROKEN PLUME: A PLATOON COMMANDER'S STORY, 1940-45., Craig, Norman.
6 Craig, Norman. THE BROKEN PLUME: A PLATOON COMMANDER'S STORY, 1940-45.
London Imperial War Museum 1982 0901627224 / 9780901627223 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Charles Freeman drawings.
191 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Monotone drawings by Charles Freeman, b&w photographs, maps. "The author's experiences as a platoon commander in the Second World War were shared by many others but few published accounts capture so faithfully the particular flavour of that conflict or the impact of battle on the individual soldier. Norman Craig was a conscript, commissioned after a year in the ranks. He served in three infantry regiments: the Welch in the United Kingdom; the Royal Sussex in the Western Desert, and Iraq and Persia; and the East Surreys in Italy. He saw action at El Alamein and in northern Italy where, only a fortnight before the end of the war in Europe, he was wounded. Between these spells of fighting he was concerned with the routine of soldiering - training, parades, courses, inspections and regimental chores - which occupied the greater part of of a subaltern's time. Norman Craig writes perceptively and with unusual candour about his war service. His book is both a personal record of considerable human interest and a significant addition to the literature of the Second World War." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor soiling on front flap.

7 Cummings, Ray. EXPLORERS INTO INFINITY.
Avalon, New York, (1965), Ist edition.
192 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "Size (matter), Space and Time were the great trinity around which Ray Cummings wrote his most famous novels, and the present story - which appeared as two short serial novels in 1927 and 1928, in Wierd Tales magazine - incorporates all three. The story is set in an indeterminate 'future' where interplanetary commerce is routine, as we see our narrator employed in communications involving the Martian mail. Among his friends is Brett Gryce, son of a famous scientist and inventor. Dr. Gryce has constructed what he calls a myrdoscope. There are, he says, normally invisible rays, akin to light, crossing Space, which this device makes visible. And these rays come from a super-universe, beyond the stars - a universe in which our own universe is but an atom!..." EYE-DEEP IN HELL: TRENCH WARFARE IN WORLD WAR I., Ellis, John.
10 Ellis, John. EYE-DEEP IN HELL: TRENCH WARFARE IN WORLD WAR I.
Pantheon, New York, 1976, first American edition.
215 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0394496647 B&w photographs, map, diagrams. "(A) masterfully detailed reconstruction of what life was like for millions of men who lived and died in the trenches of World War I. Contin uing his trail-blazing approach to the study of war and militarism, Ellis reveals the physical and spiritual environment of this unique world, the rituals of battle, the habits of daily lfie, and the constant struggle of men to find meaning i n a w o r ld of excruciating boredom and impending death. (He) beings with a description of the physical construction of the trenches, their size and shape, their peculiarities and characteristics. The soldiers' daily life is succinctly portraye d: ho w t he y ate, drank, slept, joked, fought off rats and lice, how their sexual needs were met, and how they endured the marches and patrols. But it is in the ways men sought meaning in their daily lives that Ellis reveals the true nature of war f are . In an al yzing how the habits and regulations so dear to the military mind became entrenched in the organization of the battlefield, (this book) brilliantly depicts the instinctive desire of men in battle to create order out of chaos. Thr ou gh a n expl orat ion of the personal reflections of soldiers and the letters they wrote home, Ellis discovers a literature of compassion, courage, and a capacity to endure which arose from an environment of filth, decay, and death. It capt ures a w orld in whic h men fou ght, for reasons they hardly understood, for a future most had ceased to believe in by the end of the war." Dundurn, Toronto, 2009, first edition.
236 pp, 8 1/2" H, soft cover. ISBN 9781550028539 "At a turning point in his life, George Fetherling embarked on an adventure to sail round the wrold on one of the last of the tramp freighters. The four-month voyage carried him 30,000 nautical mil es from Europe via the Panama Canal to the South Pacific and back by way of Singapore, Indonesia, the Indian Ocean, and Suez. Written with dash, colour, and droll humour, (his) narrative is peopled by a rich cast of characters, from the Forei g n L e g ionnaires of French Polnesia to the 'raskol' gangs of Papua New Guinea. The author captures the reality of life aboard a working cargo ship - the boredom, the seclusion, the differences of nationality and culture that isolation and cramp ed q u ar te rs seem to exaggerate. THE MILITARY ORDERS FROM THE TWELFTH TO THE EARLY FOURTEENTH CENTURIES., Forey, Alan.
13 Forey, Alan. THE MILITARY ORDERS FROM THE TWELFTH TO THE EARLY FOURTEENTH CENTURIES.
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1992.
278 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. Maps. ISBN 0802076807 "The reasons for the emergence and establishment of military orders on the various borders of Western Christendom and within the West are discussed, as are the military functions and roles which they assumed. The orders made a major contribution to the defence and expansion of Western Chistendom, and this required considerable funds and reserves of manpower. This book describes the ways in which these were obtained, and giv e s a n a c count of extensive governmental machinery developed to enable the orders to carry out their tasks effectively. Although their members combined a military with a monastic way of life, the military orders are shown to have differed from o th e r re l ig i o us foundations not only in their daily routine but also in their adminstrative structure and in their predominantly lay membership." GREENBANK: COUNTRY MATTERS IN 19TH CENTURY ONTARIO., Graham, W.H.
14 Graham, W.H. GREENBANK: COUNTRY MATTERS IN 19TH CENTURY ONTARIO.
Broadview Press, (Peterborough, Ont., 1988).
326 pp, 4to (11" H), soft cover. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Using the fascinating histories of four neighbouring farms as its focus, (this) book broadens to explore all aspects of the social and economic history of rural Ontario over the hundred years 1835 to 1935. It details the development of agriculture and the decline in pioneer energy in the third and fourth generations; it describes the creation of a system of formal education from scratch; it brings to life the sports, music and other forms of 19th century Ontario recreation; and captures the flavour of daily custom and routine. A recurring theme is the harsh ethic of evangelicalism, which surfaced dramatically in the temperance movement and in attitudes toward entertainment, sex, and the place of women in society. All this is woven in with the often amusing, often deeply moving stories of the remarkable individuals who inhabited the microcosm of Greenbank." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, three very small corner creases, minor rubbing, corner crease on rear cover with migration into last few pages, spine flat and uncreased. VG

F.S.P. - AN N.C.O.'s DESCRIPTION OF HIS AND OTHERS' FIRST SIX MONTHS OF WAR, JANUARY 1st - JUNE 1st 1940. (FIELD SECURITY PERSONNEL.), Gwynn-Browne, Arthur.
15 Gwynn-Browne, Arthur. F.S.P. - AN N.C.O.'s DESCRIPTION OF HIS AND OTHERS' FIRST SIX MONTHS OF WAR, JANUARY 1st - JUNE 1st 1940. (FIELD SECURITY PERSONNEL.)
London Chatto & Windus 1942 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Fair
159 pp, 7 1/2" H. "Sergeant Gwynn-Browne is in Field Security Personnel. He joined up 1939. Being a soldier is a new experience for him. 'F.S.P.' begins on a parade ground; it ends on Dunkirk beaches; in between it says a lot that has not been said before. Sergeant Gwynn-Browne is a character - (and) he is subtly and devastatingly and unexpectedly funny. The solemn and ceremonious business of standing in a line being counted is funny; so is the dubious pleasure of living on a Flemish farm with a 'very premeating little pig' as a co-billettee. Routine, discomfort, uncertainty, danger - they are all funny as Sergeant Gwynn-Browne sees them. But there is another side to the picture. There is Dunkirk with the soldiers waiting patiently on the beaches as the town blazes and the bombs fall. There is the 'honour and humanity' we are fighting for, and the new world we hope for. Indeed there is as much seriousness as of laughter in this book; and every reader will find himself in the company not only of a lively jester, but also of an original and thoughtful personality." Several small creases at bottom corner of title page - some indentation on a few subsequent pages, page leaf 13/14 has bee roughly trimmed at bottom edge, small shallow bump on front edge of spine, light edge wear, wrinkling at bottom and top of spine, light browning to edges of text block - small faint stain on top . Dust jacket is price-clipped, has a piece missing at bottom of front panel, several edge tears (one with old tape on inside) and edge chips light browning - a little more at edges and on spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

The murder takes place in a smallish building that serves as porter's lodge to one of those huge faceless blocks of workers' dwellings, so typical of the period. The dead man - a rather unpleasant character - is killed by a knife wound in his jugular vein after he has been listening to a gramaphone record of Chaliapin singing the Volga Boat Song. The investigation is made by a senior police officer, District Procurator Nikulin, and Mrs Litvinov conforms to the very welcome modern habit of showing us something of the life and feelings of her splendidly realised policeman. The investigation which shows the reader several aspects of Moscow life, including the Ballet backstage, is again modern in its routine but it is no less gripping for that, and the writing throughout has an endearingly unsophisticated quality. The atmosphere of a Russian winter, and of the streets and buildings of Moscow in the twenties is wonderfully captured. The book was first published in 1930. Mrs. Litvinov has now added a fascinating Epilogue in which she relates how she came to write the story." Small bump at top corner of boards and approx. half the pages, previous owner's name in ink on free front endpaper, minor browning to top of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

176 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, drawings, diagrams. "A special handbook for owners and mechanics. Written with the private owner in mind, it is more intimate than a standard workshop manual and much easier to follow. Much of (the authors') helpful advice and many of the diagrams, specially drawn, are exclusive to this book; a glance at the list of contents indicates the detail in which the following are covered: general maintenance and rectification of common faults, overhauls to combat normal wear and tear, and modification of the power unit for improved road performance and for competition." Appendices: 1100 Production Models; General Data; Torque Wrench Settings; General Dimensions; Routine Maintenance: Wiring Diagrams. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top of text block, slight tiny bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has moderate edge wear, light edge wrinkling, a few tiny tears - some with creases, a few tiny chips, light rubbing, soiling on rear panel.
