A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633., Bartholomew, J.G.
7 Bartholomew, J.G. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633.
London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
226 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "(T)he present volume deals with the countries of Asia, whose history and geography, and whose possibilities great and grave, are alike reflected in the maps and charts that follow. When Queen Elizabeth (I) granted to certain merchants of London a charter that gave them a roving commission to trade in the East Indies, she could not foresee the immense developments that were to rise from that adventurous commerce between east and west. The successive maps of India with their frontier changes mark the gradual advance of an old world toward the new one knit by powerful mutual ties to the Isle of Britain; and recently we have seen what it is to be hoped will open a greater era for those regions, marked by a return to the old captial of Delhi, and a resuming of ancient rites which first gained their symbolism in those lands. But Asia, as Japan has taught us and as China will undoubtedly teach us again, has her own destiny to bear out, apart from our European interests and politics; and it is in that aspect we need to study her on the lines laid down and made clear and positive in this volume. It is not the military records, the charts of mutinies and battle-fields, interesting as they are, which are alone important; but those showing the conditions, physical and climatic, of the country; the dispersion of the tongues, the sites of the old religions, the wealth and tillage of the earth with its fruits, grain and minerals, its rice fields and tea plantations; the prevalance of rain, sun and trade-winds; and the course of the sea-roads that affect its human and industrial life...In this Asian Atlas, of small dimensions as it requires to be to fit its pocket, Irkutsk in the north, 'far Mandalay', the details of the East and West Indies, the route of Marco Polo, coasts like the Carnatic, towns like Lucknow and Cawnpore, Lhasa, 'the Forbidden City' of Tibet, and Matsuye, the old capital of Idzumo, which Lafcadio Hearn describes, all have their record." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinages of Asia from the Earliest Times to the Present Day" by J. Allan, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in Asia having an Historic Interest" and an Index. Slight fading to spine color, small are of minor color loss on top of text block, very light browning to edges of text block, minor edge wear, small dplit in paper of front inside hinge, browning to pages 110/111 due to laid in newspaper clipping, slight browning to free endpapers - tiny foxing mark on front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, light fading to spine and flap-fold color, small tear at botom of spine, very tiny white mark on front panel.

Shrewsbury Airlife. 1979 0906393019 / 9780906393017 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good + Very Good
190 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). B&w photographs, drawings. "Jean Batten is one of the great names in aviation history. She was born in New Zealand in 1909, a few weeks after Louis Bleriot flew the English Channel, and qualified for a flying licence at the London Aero Club in 1930. (This book) tells the story of (her) early life and of all her famous flights. The vivid descriptions of these flights, made nearly 50 years ago, highlight the hardships and dangers faced by the early aviators. Quite alone she flew immense distances in record times and in the most basic of aeroplanes. Not only did her flights create time records, but they also blazed the trail for the modern airline routes. The book is based on her earlier work 'My Life' 1938, but thoroughly revised and lengthened by the author without losing its period feel. Now, to a new generation of readers, used to sophisticated jet travel, her achievements will seem incredible. (A) gripping story of skill and courage written by one of the last great pioneer aviatiors." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two tiny corner bumps small faint erased pencil marks at top of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, minor edge browning, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

9 Birrell, Andrew. BENJAMIN BALTZLY. PHOTOGRAPHS & JOURNALS OF AN EXPEDITION THROUGH BRITISH COLUMBIA: 1871.
Toronto Coach House Press 1978 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Benjamin Baltzly, photographer.
159 pp, oblong (9" H x 10 3/4" D). Illustrated with 71 of Baltzly's magnificent b&w photographs, plus a folded map (on thin tissue paper) - "Detail of map of British Columbia drawn by Joseph Trutch, 1871". "(B)rings together for the first time the photographs and journal of Benjamin Baltzly from his trip through British Columbia in 1871. Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass. Although a few of Baltzly's photographs have appeared in print, they have never been examined as a body. His journal, which appeared in 'The Gazette' of Montreal in 1872, is one of the very few written records left by Canadian photographers of the (19th) century. The photographs are probably the earliest taken of the rugged British Columbia interior." Two very small ink smudges on title page, tiny ink mark at bottom edge of rear pastedown. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, light wrinkle at bottom of spine and tiny tear at nottom of rear hinge.

Edmonton University of Alberta Press 1991 0888642210 / 9780888642219 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good
215 pp, 9" H. B&w and colour photographs, b&w drawings/diagrams. "The prehistoric nomadic inhabitants of Canada had no writing, no large settlements, and very little in the way of lasting material things. Before Europeans came to North America they had no guns, no horses, no hard metals. What clues we have come primarily from the work of archaeologists sifting through the buried evidence - little bits of stone and bone and pottery, refuse heaps and fire pits, ancient villages and burials, fingerprints and prehistoric blood. Yet theirs is a long and triumphant story of survival, a story that is even now just beginning to be told." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. THE TARTAN PIMPERNEL., Caskie, Donald C.
12 Caskie, Donald C. THE TARTAN PIMPERNEL.
London Oldbourne 1959 Reprint. Hard Cover Good+ Good
270 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w plates. "On Sunday, 10 June 1940, the Rev. Donald C. Caskie, Minister of the Scottish Kirk in Paris, preached for the last time in four years, said goodbye to his congregation, locked the church and joined the mass-exodus from the city. A Highlander, he denounced Hitler from his pulpit. He was on the Gestapo 'Black List'. After a perilous journey - he was mobbed by French villagers who thought him a German paratrooper and machine-gunned from the air - he arrived in Marseilles and commandeered the British Seamen's Mission near the Old Harbour. There the adventures of 'The Tartan Pimpernel' began. Immediately contacted by Allied Intelligence Officers he was conscripted to service. The Seamen's Mission became a vital link on the escape route for prisoners-of-war and soldiers escaping from Dunkirk. He fed, clothed and gave the men shelter before sending them through the Pyrenees with forged papers to Spain. He collected military information for the Allies. Denounced by a British traitor, Dr. Caskie was banished to Grenoble where he continued his work as an 'underground padre'. Arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to death in a Nazi Court he passed through seven prisons and was saved from death by a German padre. Throughout all his perils (he) was sustained by the Christian Faith and inspired by native patriotism. Still the Scottish Minister to Paris, he has saved the books in which he recorded the names of his guests of war. Among the legion of men he helped were Whitney Straight, the millionaire sportsman and R.A.F. ace, and Redvers Prior, M.P. His story is enlivened by Scottish humour and brilliant character studies of his comrades and enemies." Areas of light browning/foxing on end papers, one corner with a slight small bump, light wrinkling and colour fading at top/bottom of spine, some light colour fading on top edge of rear board, light browning on bottom edge of boards, browning and faint tiny foxing marks on edges of text block. "(A) stunning exhibition of the city's mag-nificent art treasures. Compiled by the directors of Prague's National Museum and National Gallery, this important and eye-filling work is a rich cornucopia which art historians, students of central Europe, and travelers to the historic city may sample with profit and pleasure. Itself an art treasure with its ancient buildings, historic monuments, and panoramic views, 'the city of a hundred towers' is home to notable collections of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and objects d'art dating from Charles IV and even earlier. Reflecting Prague's position at the heart of Europe along centuries-old trade routes, these collections encompass the continent's many schools of art, architecture, and handicrafts and repre-sent a distillation of Prague's turbulent thousand-year history. Modern scholarship, including some extraordinary scholarly detective work on the Prague Castle Gallery collection, has uncovered, restored, and made available to experts and public alike many little-known treasures. Equally impressive are collections of early art, coins, astronomical instruments, and Bohemian and modern Czechoslovak glass and porcelain. History of church and state can be glimpsed in the art of stone-cutters, goldsmith and silversmiths, weavers and embroiderers, and masters of illuminated manu-scripts." "(S)hows, throught the eyes of the boy Foreman was, Britain rebuilding (after WWII). In the summer of 1945, victory bonfires burn and the British Empire spans the globe anew. As the lads come home, the beaches are cleared of barbed wire and mines. Bomb sites become playgrounds, and blitzed gardens the occasion for a filched apple or potato. Foreman recalls the ongoing rationing, prefab houses, and baths in tin tubs; movies with Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, and Robin Hood with an American accent; newspaper routes and soccer madness; school days and his discovery of the opposite sex. He also describes his development as an artist; the magical revelation of 'Treasure Island', first read aloud by a teacher; postwar comic books; his early drawing lessons; and the art school where his hobby started to become a vocation. Foreman's evocative color illustrations depict the detail of daily life and include period documents. (This book) recreates an enchanting world - a time of innocence, wonder, and the simple pleasures, illuminated by the artist's vivid memory. Here is a marvelous achievement and an enduring memoir for all ages."

"(S)hows, throught the eyes of the boy Foreman was, Britain rebuilding (after WWII). Here is a marvelous achievement and an enduring memoir for all ages." Book has minor cocking. Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at bottom of spine.

THE STORY OF CANADIAN ROADS., Guillet, Edwin C.
19 Guillet, Edwin C. THE STORY OF CANADIAN ROADS.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1968 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
246 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps, drawings. "From portage trails snaking their way through the wilderness to superhighways carrying the raw materials and produce of an industrial nation, Canada's roads have had a romantic but long-neglected history. The problems which Canada has faced in seeking to connect two oceans by road would have been formidable even in a land more densely populated. Early builders found their way blocked by forest and swamp, rivers, rocks, vast areas of grassland, mountains, and muskeg. Their gradual success is recounted from the woodland trail cleared by Champlain in Acadia on through the early construction by corvee in New France; the Temiscouta Trail between the Atlantic Provinces and the Canadas; the infamous corduroy roads and bridges which jolted passengers unmercifully and lamed their horses; the plank roads, Canada's first contribution to road-building science; the cart tracks cut into the virgin prairies by Metis buffalo hunters; the Cariboo Road, build through sheer canyons and over mountain passes to the gold fields fo the Upper Fraser; and the vehicles which travelled these routes - the wonderul assortment of sleighs, caleches, buckboards, Red River carts, wagons, and stage-coaches of the nineteenth century. Then came the automobile, and with it an unprecedented personal mobility. Today Canada's roads are one of her principal resources. The Trans-Canada Highway, a dream for most of a century, has forged a new tie of asphalt and concrete, unifying the country." Dust jacket has very light edge wear, tiny dent on front hinge.
