7 Garrison, Webb. FRIENDLY FIRE IN THE CIVIL WAR: MORE THAN 100 TRUE STORIES OF COMRADE KILLING COMRADE.
Nashville, Tennessee Rutledge Hill 1999 1558537368 / 9781558537361 Very Good
229 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, maps/battle plans, reproductions. "On May 2, 1863, Stonewall Jackson was on the verge of the greatest victory of his career. Shortly before 10 p.m. he rode through the woods near Chancellorsville, Virginia, to find where the Federals had established their line. As he returned, his own men, in the noise and confusion, opened fire, wounding Jackson several times. One of the Civil War's first heroes died eight days later. Stonewall Jackson's death is but one example of Confederate killing Confederate or Yankee killing Yankee. No war was as intense and chaotic as the American Civil War. (The author) has brought together Jackson's story and 150 other instances of friendly fire in this unique book that strips away the romanticism of the Civil War." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light edge wear - mainly on spine, tiny scuff on front cover.

WOLFE AT QUEBEC., Hibbert, Christopher.
8 Hibbert, Christopher. WOLFE AT QUEBEC.
Longmans, Green, London, 1959, first edition.
194 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, maps. "In the early hours of the morning on 13th September 1759, a British flotilla drifted silently on the ebb tide down the St Lawrence River towards Quebec. A last and desperate at tempt was being made to capture the town before the ice closed over the river and made further operations that season impossible. By dawn over 4,000 men had disembarked from the landing craft and clambered up the steep and slippery slopes on t o t h e Plains of Abraham. The French were taken completely by surprise and the battle that followed was short and dramatic. By noon the fate of Canada had been decided. In describing the events of this day and the bitter and seemingly hopel e ss s i eg e th at preceded it, (the author) has relied entirely upon contemporary sources, some of which were not available when previous accounts were written. For this reason the story which has emerged is in some respects an unfamiliar one an d the in ci den ta l p ortrait of Wolfe, stripped of the sentimental veneer which two centuries of adulation have built around him, is one which will surprise many readers. (This book) provides not only a vivid account of what has been described a s the most im port ant eve nt in the history of the 18th century, but a fascinating portrait of one of its most famous soldiers." Book slightly cocked, bump at bottom corner of boards, very light browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling a nd bro wning at botto m of spin e, a few very tiny soiling specks on top of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two small edge tears, corner crease on front flap, light soiling, light brow nin g on spine and flap-f olds, a few small brown stains at bottom of spine. FRENCH CANADA AND THE ST. LAWRENCE: HISTORIC, PICTURESQUE AND DESCRIPTIVE., Hopkins, J. Castell. Introduction by Cameron Nish.
9 Hopkins, J. Castell. Introduction by Cameron Nish. FRENCH CANADA AND THE ST. LAWRENCE: HISTORIC, PICTURESQUE AND DESCRIPTIVE.
Toronto Coles 1974 Facsimile Edition. Fine Very Good
431 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with gilt lettering/banding on spine and front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection.B&w illustrations. A facsimile of the edition published by John Winston Co., Philadelphia, 1913 - with a new introduction for the Coles Canadiana Collection. "After establishing the physical setting of French Canada and its natural splendor, Hopkins examines and describes the types - religious, social, psychological - who were responsible for the creation of French Canada, and French Canadian society. As themes, Hopkins emphsizes the discoverers Cartier and Champlain, the explorers - fur traders Lasalle, and LaVerendrye, the roles of the Church, the martyrs, the early government administrators. Hopkins' views and sentiments reflected the philosophies of many of his contemporaries, including John A. Macdonald, Wilfrid Laurier and Sir Thomas Chapais. Despite the strong and steady current of Imperial sentiment prevailing, an incipient Canadian nationalism was emerging, fostered by the creation of national heroes, villains and saints." Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light wrinkling/rubbing at bottom of rear hinge.

NORTHERN ARMAGEDDON: THE BATTLE OF THE PLAINS OF ABRAHAM, MacLeod, D. Peter
10 MacLeod, D. Peter NORTHERN ARMAGEDDON: THE BATTLE OF THE PLAINS OF ABRAHAM
Vancouver, British Columbia Douglas & McIntyre 2008 1553654129 / 9781553654124 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+
379 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w and colour illustrations (maps, plates). "(T)he story of the Siege of Quebec and its climax, the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. A brief bloody affair, it brought a brutal end to the Seven Years' War in North America, the first truly global conflict - and the first truly modern one - waged against civilians and cities as well as soldiers and fortifications. This is a story of strategy, generals and geopolitics - and ordinary people. A British sailor, an American irregular, a French officer, a Huron warrior, a nun who tended the wounded; their impressions, captured in letters and journals, give us a new, more human view of the battle, one often absent from the history books. By day's end September 13 (1759), Wolfe was dead and Montcalm dying, the British victorious and the French on the run. France's New World empire was finished. The battle was over, but the musket volleys fired that morning continue to echo through our world. The hardships of North America's First Nations, the birth of Canada, and the rise of the United States can all be traced to that morning's actions. Our world was created on that field 250 years ago. Very small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, very small wrinkle at bottom of spine.
