134 pp, 11 7/8" H. Map endpapers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(C)hronicles the significant aeronautical events which took place in the Cumbria, Dumfries and Galloway region from 1825 to 1914. The uninformed reader glancing at the topographical map may wonder as to what possible level of pioneering aviation activity could be sustained in a predominantly mountainous region where man is grossly outnumbered by sheep - yet between these years it was to encapsulate almost all aspects of man's aeronautical endeavour, from ballooning, parachuting, gliding, aircraft and airship construction to aero engine production. Cumbria is the birthplace of both British naval and civil marine aviation and for the first time the full exciting story is told aided by many previously unpublished documents and photographs." Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing, a few tiny dents on rear panel/hinge.

66 pp, 12" H. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "During the darkest days of World War II, as bombs fell on the home population of Great Britain and the firestorm that had raged across Europe was poised to engulf the world, there were precious few ways for the Allies to strike back at their enemy. One of their most powerful weapons was the magnificent Avro Lancaster bomber, with its legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, its enormous bomb bay, and its steadily improving electronic countermeasures that enabled it to strike deep into the heart of Nazi Germany. With wonderfully detailed photographs of various crew positions, instrumentation, engines, and armament, along with archival WWII photographs, you'll fly with the pilots and crew of this aviation classic." THE ARROW., Dow, James.
6 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1997 1550285548 / 9781550285543 Fine
166 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "Here is the fascinating story of the rise and fall of the Arrow, the legendary interceptor jet aircraft developed by A.V. Roe Canada in the fifties. The Arrow was an unprecedented success story for Canada's fledgling aviation industry. It was conceived by its builders as the culmination of an impressive string of world firsts. Faster than any previous aircraft, it represented the leading edge of technology and an achievement of the highest calibre. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time and which remains hard to fathom even today. The Diefenbaker government cancelled the Arrow, and everything was destroyed, including the planes themselves. Nothing was to remain. Working from official documents, archives, interviews and a wide range of unofficial sources, James Dow presents the authoritative story of A.V. Roe Canada and its projects. He describes how the Arrow was developed and why it was killed. Dow takes us behind the scenes to the real dynamics and rivalries which were a part of the Arrow from the beginning and which explain its fate. This edition of the definitive books on the subject has been updated with a new introduction."

THE ARROW., Dow, James.
7 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1979 0888622811 Very Good Good+
160 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The Arrow (supersonic fighter) appeared on Avro's drawing boards in 1952 and was in the air by 1958. Test flights were a great success, and five aircraft had flown by 1959. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time, and which even now seems obscure. The Arrow was cancelled, and everything to do with it, including the planes that had already flown, was broken into scrap. Nothing was to remain. To tell the story of the Arrow, James Dow explores the impressive experience of Canada's aircraft industry, created from virtually nothing during the Second World War by C.D. Howe and recruits from the business world. Avro was put together when the government aircraft companies were sold off at the war's end. Avro's first postwar project was the Jetliner, conceived in 1945 for Air Canada (then TCA). It was very nearly the world's first passenger jet, and was first in the air in August 1949 only days behind Britain's Comet. Avro's military experience came with the CF-100 Canuck fighter, which flew first in 1951. There was even an experimental flying saucer, built for the U.S. armed forces. The Arrow was to be the culmination of this experience and this success." Previous owner's place, date and signature in ink on front free endpaper; some light toning to endpapers and to edges of text block, very tiny bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, several small tears with creases at top edge, light edge wear, one small edge chip, protectedin a mylar sleeve.

Iowa City University of Iowa Press 1989 0877452652 / 9780877452652 Very Good+ Very Good+
544 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "(The) story of the men who spent their youth designing and building England's first flying-machines: the men who pioneered the British aircraft industry. Some of their aircraft have achieved immortality - the legendary Pup, Camel, Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster. But of the men who designed and built them, men like Frederick Handley Page, Tommy Sopwith, George Holt Thomas and Geoffrey de Havilland, perhaps only Rolls and Royce are still household names. These pioneers of aviation development began to build their empires during Worl;d War I, although several of them crashed during the bleak period that followed. World War II revived their fortunes, as somehow they met the challenge of enormously increased production and helped save England from invasion. They tested the early jets and speedily built the first post-war jet airliner. But already they were making errors which would result in bankruptcies, forced mergers and foreign takeovers. Peter King describes the knight in all their glamour, skill, idiosyncrasy, greed, flair and desire for power. Quotations from previously unpublished papers, from colleagues and contemporaries, and from customers (governments, the British Air Force, commercial airlines) for the first time describe how wilful they could be, as well as how brilliantly enterprising and entertaining." Slight wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor soiling on bottom of textblock. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

Palmer has built a rare book of adventure on the airways by presenting hundreds of (b&w) photographs from his collection which has taken him many years to assemble. With these is the story of development, told in a crisp, readable style with an appendix for the technically minded. Here are the gas bags and gyrocopters - the 'Char-a-banc' and 'City of Glasgow' - the first planes to pack the mail and the first to span the seas. You learn of the early German mosnters and the facts about Henry Ford's 'Tine Goose'. You find pictured the exteriors and interiors of airplanes that made one flight and of others still flying in these days of jets. You read about daring pilots and inventive genius."
