6 Delve, Ken. D-DAY: THE AIR BATTLE.
Ramsbury Crowood Press 2004 1861267045 / 9781861267047 Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 10" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps/plans. "6 June 1944 saw the Allied invasion of occupied Europe - one of the riskiest military operations of World War Two. The part played by air power in the success of the operation was crucial. This was the greatest concentration of striking power ever seen: 12,000 combat aircraft. Fighter-bombers such as the P-47 Thunderbolt and Hawker Typhoon bombed, strafed and rocketed tactical targets with great accuracy, while strategic bombers, escorted by hundreds of fighters, targeted bridges, marshalling yards, coastal guns and military stores. Other aircraft flew sophisticated decoy operations and hundreds of transports dropped paratroops or released gliders. In this, the only full-length book on the subject, Ken Delve examines the air campaign from the pre-invasion bombing strategy that prepared the battlefield to the massive air effort that accompanied the actual assault and the air umbrella during the vital weeks following the landings. Originally published in 1994, (it) has been substantially enlarged, re-illustrated and completely reset (providing) comprehensive coverage of this vital air campaign." Small bump at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of front hinge.

Atglen, PA Schiffer 1994 0887406823 / 9780887406829 Soft Cover Very Good +
48 pp, oblong (8 1/4" H x 11" D), stapled in wraps. B&w and color photographs, b&w drawings. "(The Luftwaffe looked) into the possibility of producing inexpensive aircraft which, however, would have enough power to quickly engage the enemy formations. Consequently, the machines which were created were predominantly made of wood, a raw material not important to the war effort. Assembly and construction were kept as simple as possible. In this way these machines could be completed without affecting the already overloaded industry. The rocket motor was a natural choice for a power plant due to its high performance. The take-off and landing procedures were kept simple to avoid long training periods for pilots. Take-off was accomplished via a tow or the vertical take-off. Landing was made on skids or the fighter abandoned and the pilot and important components (e.g. motor, weapons systems) recovered by parachute. What follows is the history of t he development of these technically highly-interesting aircraft." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor wear at top/bottom of spine.

11 Gatland, Kenneth W. and Kunesch, Anthony Ma SPACE TRAVEL.
New York Philosophical Library 1953 Second Impression. Hard Cover Good Good J.W. Wood and R.A. Smith.
205 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, tables. "Here, described with enthusiasm and authority, is not only the whole history of rocket development from the days of the first discovery of an explosive mixture before the birth of Christ, but also the latest information on the harnessing of the tremendous new propellants available today, which may soon make journeys into space a commonplace of human life. Both (authors) are technical experts in their own fields. While their working hours are concerned with terrestrial problems, their scientific curiosity and knowledge are also beamed into the outer reaches of the Ether. They have accordingly produced a series of blueprints for the construction of an artificial satellite freely revolving in its own orbit around the Earth, and for the great liners which will take off from it on their flashing journeys to starry destinations in our own solar system and even, perhaps, beyond. There are nearly 100 (illustrations): historical records of early experiments, magnificent modern photographs of the latest achievements, and in addition a series of exciting drawings, specially made for the book, of space stations and space ships, which not only fire the imagination, but are precise in every detail." Light to moderate edge wear, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, 1" bump/creases at bottom edge of rear board, two tiny corner bumps. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge, one or two tiny edge tears archivally taped, light rubbing, minor soiling, very small bump to bottom edge of text block.

Hoo, Kent Grange 2002 184013478X / 9781840134780 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
176 pp, 12 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, drawings, reproductions. "(B)egins with the earliest pieces of Western artillery that were little more than iron tubes firing stone shot. Over the next few centuries the guns became more mobile and more powerful, influencing the course of the battles in which they were involved. Muzzle loaders reached their apogee in the Napoleonic wars and the American Civil War during the nineteenth century. By the outbreak of World War I in 1914, breech-loaded guns were the standard, and weapons of such large calibres were being constructed that they needed to be mounted on rail wagons to give them any form of mobility. Artillery played a significant role in shaping how that conflict was fought, and it was to play an equally signifi-cant role in World War II. Only now, in the twenty-first century, is the supremacy of artillery on the battlefield being challenged by air-dropped precision-guided weapons, but the arm is fighting back with sophisticated new munitions becoming available which will ensure that artillery has a part to play on the modern battlefield for the forseeable future." Chapter headings: Sighting Shots; The American Civil War; Storm of Steel, 1900-1935; Master of the Battlefield, 1936-1945; Cold War Killers; Glossary; Index. Book is fine. Dust jacket minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing.

203 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps, drawings. "Only five minutes from launch to impact: not even enough time to give an air raid alert. They could not be tracked: they travelled too high and too fast to be shot down. These were the rocket 'Vengeance Weapons', launched in addition to the flying bombs in retaliation for British and American bombing raids on German cities. Damage inflicted upon London was considerable: 198 were killed by a flying bomb in the Aldwych, hundreds died at New Cross, and over one hundred civilians lost their lives in Smithfield Market. (The author) examines the effects of the V-1 flying bombs and V-2 rockets on a capital still showing the scars of the 1940-41 blitz. On 6th June 1944, only a few hours after the D-Day landings, orders were passed down from German High Command to prepare the 'Vengeance Weapons' for an immediate assault on Britain." 118 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "The 1960s was a decade of major transition for the National Hockey League. Bitter rivalries were the order of the day, especially between Canada's two teams, as the Leafs and the Canadiens accounted for nine of the decade's Stanley Cup winners. The league doubled in size as new teams in St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Oakland brought hockey to new fans throughout North America. Aging superstars like Maurice 'Rocket' Richard passed the torch to the next generation of stellar players such as Bobby Orr. Hall of Famers like Johnny Bower, Dave Keon, Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, Jean Beliveau, Terry Sawchuk and Glenn Hall were at their peak. Through it all, innovative action photographer Harold Barkley was rinkside, recording for posterity the greatest moments of hockey in the sixties. To his stunning colour photographs, accomplished hockey writer Mike Leonetti adds intriguing, fact-filled captions and comments.
