1 Bergstein, Rachelle. WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: THE STORY OF SHOES AND HOW THEY DEFINE US.
New York Harper 2012 0061969613 / 9780061969614 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Nami Matsuo Scott.
284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - also tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top of hinges, minor rubbing.

2 Birrell, Andrew. BENJAMIN BALTZLY. PHOTOGRAPHS & JOURNALS OF AN EXPEDITION THROUGH BRITISH COLUMBIA: 1871.
Toronto Coach House Press 1978 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Benjamin Baltzly, photographer.
159 pp, oblong (9" H x 10 3/4" D). Illustrated with 71 of Baltzly's magnificent b&w photographs, plus a folded map (on thin tissue paper) - "Detail of map of British Columbia drawn by Joseph Trutch, 1871". "(B)rings together for the first time the photographs and journal of Benjamin Baltzly from his trip through British Columbia in 1871. Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass. Although a few of Baltzly's photographs have appeared in print, they have never been examined as a body. His journal, which appeared in 'The Gazette' of Montreal in 1872, is one of the very few written records left by Canadian photographers of the (19th) century. The photographs are probably the earliest taken of the rugged British Columbia interior." Two very small ink smudges on title page, tiny ink mark at bottom edge of rear pastedown. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, light wrinkle at bottom of spine and tiny tear at nottom of rear hinge.

Before Europeans came to North America they had no guns, no horses, no hard metals. What clues we have come primarily from the work of archaeologists sifting through the buried evidence - little bits of stone and bone and pottery, refuse heaps and fire pits, ancient villages and burials, fingerprints and prehistoric blood. Yet theirs is a long and triumphant story of survival, a story that is even now just beginning to be told." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. New York New Directions 1968 Third Printing Soft Cover Good Signed by Author
48 pp, 7 15/16" H. Signed on half title page: "Ferlinghetti". "(B)rings together six long poems with a certain continuity and progression of vision. The first five poems form a related sequence in which the poet sees 'all too clearly'. In 'Assassination Raga' the 'glass' through which the poet sees darkly is the TV tube, and it was first read on the night of Robert Kennedy's funeral at a mammoth poetry reading in Nourse Auditorium, San Francisco. 'Bickford's Buddha' is a mediation on being afflicted with what the poet calls 'observation fever' - the ultimate vision being that of the 'all-seeing' Buddha. 'All too Clearly' finds a surreal meaning of things in flight. 'Through the Looking Glass' is also an in-flight poem, beginning with an actual flight aboard a commercial airliner and progressing through LSD vision to a final flash of how through everything 'Shiva advances with a broken arm'. 'After the Cries of Birds' is a logical opening-out of that vision into a wide-angle prophecy of the future of the world. 'Moscow in the Wilderness, Segovia in the Snow' is a separate long poem resulting from Ferlinghetti's trip across Russia and Siberia in the Winter of 1967." Interior - tiny bump at top corner of pages, one or two small light stains on inside of rear cover, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - light browning to edges of text block and to edges of rear cover, an area of light liquid marks on rear cover, very light edge wear, small crease at bottom corner of front cover.

199 pp, 11 1/4" H. (B)rings together reproductions of over 170 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, in which 130 individual artists have interpreted aspects of the city of Toronto, from its incorporation in 1834 right up to the present day. Although organized in five chronological sections, it is not simply an illustrated history of the city. Rather it is a gallery of pictures accompanied by explanatory texts. Special emphasis has been given to new and unfamiliar material, and over 100 of the pictures in the book have never been reproduced before. Care has also been taken to reflect the ethnic, religious, social and cultural diversity of the city. The big names are here, among them such figures as Paul Kane, Sanford Fleming and Robert Harris from the Victorian period, several members of the Group of Seven, and more recent masters such as Jack Bush and David Milne. But here also are a host of less famous artists: some city residents, some passing visitors, some anonymous, some amateurs whose enthusiasm was greater than their talent. All, however, in their own ways, have made a vital contribution to our record of Toronto as it was and is." Minor scuff on bottom edge of front board, book slightly curved. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, very light edge wrinkling, three small edge tears archivally taped, slight waviness to back panel.

"Indian trade silver is a fascinating and little-known part of our cultural heritage - a product of the interaction between two prof oundly different cultures during the European exploration of North America. Originating in the early diplomatic gifts of medals to friendly Indians, the distribution of silver became widespread during the height of the fur trade, 1760 to 18 2 1 . S i l ver ornaments designed specifically for the fur trade included brooches, gorgets, armbands, legbands, earrings, nose-rings, crosses and headbands. A travelling exhibition of over two hundred of these ornaments was organized by the Nati on al M u se um o f Man, Ottawa, and this book was written to accompany it. Previously known only to scholars and collectors, this unusual art form has now become accessible to a much wider public. The silver ornaments created for the fur trade we re pro du c ed by bot h European and colonial silversmiths, but the Iroquois began to make similar pieces for their people after silver ceased to be available through the fur trade. Although the craft died out, it has recently been revived, and the ex hibi tio n inc lud es m any examples of modern Iroquois workmanship. 197 pp, 10" H. J.R.R. Tolkien, the "man who was embarrassed by success lived most of his life as an Oxford scholar in the surrounds of a cloistered academic community. As a child in South Africa, (he) was kidnapped by a native and taken into the bush. As a youngster in the English industrial city of Birmingham, Tolkien was raised by a Catholic priest. As a young adult, (he) lived throught the bloody horror of the trenches of World War I. Here, for the first time, the door is opened to the life and thoughts of the masterful creator of Middle-earth."
