HURRICANE AT WAR., Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Group Captain T.P. Gleave. Dust jacket art by Rex Flood.
1 Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Group Captain T.P. Gleave. Dust jacket art by Rex Flood. HURRICANE AT WAR.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, 1974, first edition.
160 pp, 11 1/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711005648 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "The Hawker Hurricane has a permanent niche in the annals of military aviation history as the world's first operational eight-gun monoplane fighter and the RAF's first front-line fighter to achieve more than 300mph in level flight. But it has received little credit for its subsequent lion's share of the defence of the United Kingdom during the 1940 Battle of Britain, and its later serv ice in a score of fighting roles across every theatre of operations during the 1939-45 war. In this book the author sets out to redress this omission in due recognition of the Hurricane's magnificent record. With a collation of authentic, firs t - h a nd impressions and experiences by the men who flew and serviced the Hurricane, backed by a unique collection of specially selected photographs, many from private sources, he has recreated the genuine atmosphere of Hurricane operations. This a ma lg am of text and photographs traces the story of the Hurricane and its crews from the first prototype and pre-1939 service to France 1940; through the Battle of Britain; in the frozen wastes of North Russia; over beleagured Malta; across Sic ily an d G ree ce and as far afield as the Burmese jungle. There are pilots' accounts of low-level bombing sorties covering the disastrous Dieppe invasion, a personal story by the only fighter pilot of World War II to be awarded the Victoria Cross , an d pi ctor ial sections illustrating the armament, markings and, especially, the men who knew the Hurricane best - the crews." Multiple creases at bottom of pages 27 thru 40. very small crease/bump at top corner of pages 83 thru 102, light wrin kling at t op/bo ttom of spine, one tiny corner bump, small shallow bump and a tiny scuff at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has light rubbing, areas of light wrinkling at top edge. Very Good-/ Very Good

QUADRANTUS REX., Coulehan, Norbert.
2 Coulehan, Norbert. QUADRANTUS REX.
Macmillan, London, 1959, first edition.
298 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In the second year B.C. the Emperor Augustus decided to call a conference for world peace, 'Pax Mundana', and despatched a young sea tribune, Titus to collect and escort to Rome the three gr eat Kings from Africa, Asia and the Baltic. This, in the first place, is the story of how Titus carried out his unusual assignment, the hazards and dangers of his voyages and his difficulties, both practical and diplomatic, with his noble c h a r g e s . But no less important than the sea tribune is Quadrantus, the Master of the squaresailer in which he travelled. It is soon apparent that this is no ordinary ship and Quadrantus is no ordinary master: a giant of a man, he runs his du mb c re w wi th u n canny precision and his navigation and seamanship verge on the miraculous. After the fruitless conference, Titus and Quadrantus escort the three Kings on what seems a hopeless mission to King Herod. Guided by a strange st a r, the Ki ngs a re lan ded n ear Philippi, and the half-whispered stories of the phenomena which heralded the Birth of Christ and the legend of a fourth King who set off for Bethlehem with his fellows yet failed to arrive, are given an unexpect ed tw ist when see n t hro ugh the mir ror of Norbert Coulehan's narrative." Tiny foxing specks on the top and fore-edge of the textblock, light to moderate edge wear, small bump at top of spine, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket i s p rice cli pped, has ligh t to mod erat e ed ge wear/wrinkling, very small chips and tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, light browning on flap-folds. 5 Findley, Timothy. ELIZABETH REX.
Winnipeg, MB Blizzard 2000 0921368984 / 9780921368984 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
79 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "In this daring and original play, Timothy Findley brings together none other than William Shakespeare and the formidable Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I. What makes a man a man and a woman a woman? Late at night on the eve of her former lover's execution, this is the very question Queen Elizabeth wrestles with as she descends to the stable lodgings of Shakespeare's players. Her unexpected arrival disturbs the playwright and his actors and provokes the rapier-sharp, haughty indifference of Ned, Shakespeare's genius performer of women's roles - himself now aged, ill and facing his mortality. In their vitriolic confrontation, the actor, the playwright, and the queen come to startling revelations about sex, identity, humanity, and love." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

169 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). Maps. "Between the years 1948 and 1960, British armed forces were involved in six campaigns overseas, in Malaya, Korea, Cyprus, Suez and South Arabia. In order to provide the manpower for these operations, fixed-term universal male peacetime conscription was instituted for the only time in this country's history. Of the million and a half men called up on reaching the age of eighteen, about a hundred and twenty-five thousand, or one in twelve, served in an active theatre of operations, for which a campaign medal was awarded. This book consists of the reminiscences of twenty-three of these men, who each served in one, or in some cases two, of the six campaigns. They recall, often with some emotion, their service in far-off places, against largely invisible enemies, in pursuit of aims which remain obscure to this day. They remember the brutality, the hardship, the excitement and the humour of an experience which for all of them appears to have been an important, if sometimes painful, part of the process of growing up. They also record, in many cases, the indifference, both personal and official, with which they were treated on their return home, and this book represents an attempt, however small and belated, to set straight the record regarding the achievements of these 'virgin soldiers'." Very light browning to top of textblock, small ghost sticker mark on front pastedown. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, very light rubbing - mainly on rear panel.

JULIE ANDREWS: A LIFE ON STAGE AND SCREEN., Windeler, Robert.
14 Windeler, Robert. JULIE ANDREWS: A LIFE ON STAGE AND SCREEN.
Birch Lane / Carol Publishing, Secaucus, N.J., 1997.
262 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1559723912 B&w photographs. "Since her professional singing debut at the London Hippodrome in 1947 - at the age of twelve - Julie Andrews has been a star. In the half century since th ose last days of British vaudeville, through her smash Broadway comeback in 'Victor/Victoria', she has triumphed on stage, in the movies, and on television. At thirteen, Julie gave a command performance for the Queen of England, at nineteen she b e c ame a Broadway star in 'The Boy Friend', and she became a theatrical legend before she was twenty-one, as Elize Doolittle in 'My Fair Lady'. By the time she was thirty-one, Julie was the best-paid and most beloved actress in the world, with a n Ac ad emy Award for her first movie, 'Mary Poppins', and an international box-office championship with her third movie, 'The Sound of Music'. Her remarkable body of work up to this point stamped her with an indelible image she came to resent: who le som e, innocent, the nanny next door. Worse, at the peak of her enormous success, Andrews was unhappy enough to submit to daily psychotherapy. Her first marriage, to childhood sweetheart Tony Walton, broke down. After two flop movie musicals, 'St ar!' an d 'Darling Lili', the press and the public seemed to turn on her. Julie became box-office poison in Hollywood but even in her semiexile starred in critically successful, Emmy-winning television variety series, wrote two children's book s, a nd pe rfor med live....Here at last is the whole sixty-two-year life story of Julie Andrews - her meteoric rise, her devastating fall, and her incredible comeback, from the little English girl with the freak four-octave, crystalline voice to th e sur prisin g leg end who has outlasted her critics. Rober Windeler's affectionate and insightful biography reveals the full-blooded woman behind the high and low notes." Small soft bump at top corner of pages 35 to 50, minor wrinkling at bottom of spi ne, sma ll wat er mark and tiny stain on rear board. THE PERSIAN EXPEDITION., Xenophon. Translated by Rex Warner.
15 Xenophon. Translated by Rex Warner. THE PERSIAN EXPEDITION.
Penguin, Baltimore, Maryland, 1965, book club edition.
309 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map. "One of history's most remarkable military achievements - the march of the Ten Thousand Greeks - is detailed in this highly readable first-hand account by a dynamic leader. Cool, calculating and brilliant, Xenophon emerges as a fascinating military figure. In (this book) he reveals the character, training and strategy that made the Greek soldier so efficient. In the fourth century B.C. Cyrus the Younger, pretender to the Persian thron e, launched a fierce campaign against his brother the king. With the help of Greek troops, whom he recognized as the best infantrymen in the world, Cyrus believed he could surprise and defeat his brother's vastly superior force and seize the throne . Unfortunately Cyrus' own troops were not as effective as his Greek recruits, and the force as a whole was weak in cavalry. The campaign collapsed, Cyrus himself was killed and the Greeks were stranded in Persia. Surrounded by a hostile and bitt er foe, Xenophon and his fellow leaders faced the incredible task of leading ten thousand men back from Babylon to the Black Sea. The success of the five-month march - one of the most famous in history - was a triumph of discipline and improvisatio n in the face of overwhelming odds. For Xenophon not only managed to lead his men out of Persia but succeeded in keeping the army intact as a fighting force. (This) is both an absorbing tale of adventure and military skill and an unusual story of human character. It also presents a revealing account of the day-to-day life of the common soldier unique in classical writing." Small bump at top of rear board, several tiny/very small stains on rear board, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two t iny corner bumps slight edge wear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light wrinkling at top of front flap, several tiny edge tears - some with old tape repair, slight fading to spine color, color offs et on inside of spine/hinges from book.
