Crowood, Marlborough, 1998, first edition.
223 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1861261349 Many b&w photographs. "Universally acknowledged as representing the British national character, the Bulldog can trace its ancestry back to Roman times. With the prohibition on bullbaiting in the nineteenth century came a decline in the popularity of the Bulldog, almost to the point of extinction. The breed was kept alive by a few dedicated fanciers and has now adapted itself to domesticity and become an affec t i o n a t e companion and an ideal household pet. Whilst Bulldogs are far from vicious, they can display great courage in protecting their owners, families and property should the need arise. This detailed book traces the origins of the Bulldog a nd c om pa re s t he conformation of the Bulldog in the early years with today's standard. The author provides clear information on what to look for when choosing a puppy, care, management and breeding. There is also a section on holistic medi cin es for th e p rev en ti on and cure of common ailments and diseases. Readers will learn the correct way to show the dog, and gain useful insights into the world of judging. Packed with interesting and useful information for those thinking of buyi ng a pu ppy, or owne rs new and old, (this) is a must for all lovers of the breed." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, one small closed tear with soft creasing at bottom of rear panel, light rubbing. Near Fine/Very Good-

THE TARTAN PIMPERNEL., Caskie, Donald C.
11 Caskie, Donald C. THE TARTAN PIMPERNEL.
London Oldbourne 1959 Reprint. Hard Cover Good+ Good
270 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w plates. "On Sunday, 10 June 1940, the Rev. Donald C. Caskie, Minister of the Scottish Kirk in Paris, preached for the last time in four years, said goodbye to his congregation, locked the church and joined the mass-exodus from the city. A Highlander, he denounced Hitler from his pulpit. He was on the Gestapo 'Black List'. After a perilous journey - he was mobbed by French villagers who thought him a German paratrooper and machine-gunned from the air - he arrived in Marseilles and commandeered the British Seamen's Mission near the Old Harbour. There the adventures of 'The Tartan Pimpernel' began. Immediately contacted by Allied Intelligence Officers he was conscripted to service. The Seamen's Mission became a vital link on the escape route for prisoners-of-war and soldiers escaping from Dunkirk. He fed, clothed and gave the men shelter before sending them through the Pyrenees with forged papers to Spain. He collected military information for the Allies. Denounced by a British traitor, Dr. Caskie was banished to Grenoble where he continued his work as an 'underground padre'. Arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to death in a Nazi Court he passed through seven prisons and was saved from death by a German padre. Throughout all his perils (he) was sustained by the Christian Faith and inspired by native patriotism. Still the Scottish Minister to Paris, he has saved the books in which he recorded the names of his guests of war. Among the legion of men he helped were Whitney Straight, the millionaire sportsman and R.A.F. ace, and Redvers Prior, M.P. His story is enlivened by Scottish humour and brilliant character studies of his comrades and enemies." Areas of light browning/foxing on end papers, one corner with a slight small bump, light wrinkling and colour fading at top/bottom of spine, some light colour fading on top edge of rear board, light browning on bottom edge of boards, browning and faint tiny foxing marks on edges of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has small chips and tears (some with old tape on inside), light rubbing/soiling - mainly on rear panel, edge creases, very light edge wear, newspaper clipping tipped in on front flap.

McLaren, Russell, Ont., dated August 21st., 1917. In it, he mentions writing 'The Trail of Love', his family, the start of his lumber operations in Muskoka and his distress that, during the current war, people seem less respectful of the Sabbath day. From the Foreword: "It was my good fortune to be born of parents who hewed their home out of the Canadian wilderness, and to spend my early years among the pioneers of Wentworth and Halton Counties in the Province of Ontario, the simplicity and honesty of whose lives has been steadfastly engraved upon my memory. As a result, it is perhaps only natural that a most persistent call has come to me to record in a way that will be imperishable a few of the virtues of these honest and upright lives." 240 pp, small 4to (10 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Beautifully and profusely illustrated with colour photographs. ISBN 0356175375 "John Freeman has spent a year investigating the worlds behind the closed doors of the Capital, unearthing an incredible variety of important interiors. The best and most exciting of these have been brought together in this book, revealing ninety unique views of London, many of which have been photographed here for the first time. The result is the mo s t authoritative and well-researched book on the hidden and unappreciated interiors of London, coveirng not only buildings from all periods of history but sites that represent many of the aspects of London life. Five thematic chapters put each in di vi d ual interior into context, making the book not only a stunning visual and descriptive account of the multifarious worlds inside London, but an important survey of London's architecture and design. The chapters include 'The Grand Scale', a s tud y o f the most opulent and grand interiors, with unusual angles on the well-known - such as the Albert Hall and Old Bailey - as well as impressive but less accessible sites such as the Granada Cinema at Tooting. 'Into the Twentieth Century' rev eals the i nnovative decors - successful or otherwise - of recent years; 'The Decorative Tradition' celebrates the richness of period and contemporary detailing in London; 'Moments Preserved' evokes not only nostalgia but wonders at the perfect pr eserv ation or restoration of a period room or moment in time (with a plea therefore for their further protection). 'Private Lives' explores the personal homes that have been transformed in traditional and eclectic styles by their owners, and als o prov ides g limp ses into private habitats, from the hallowed halls of the Reform Club to a Chelsea houseboat and even a 'taxi driver' eatery." This is a heavy volume which will require additional postage. Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has min or wr inkling at top of spine and rear flap-fold, very minor rubbing.
