LOUIS WAIN'S CATS., Beetles, Chris. With contributions from Rodney Dale and David Wootton.
3 Beetles, Chris. With contributions from Rodney Dale and David Wootton. LOUIS WAIN'S CATS.
Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." Dust jacket has tiny wrinkles at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few slight wrinkles on front flap

FROM WILDER SHORES: THE TABLES OF MY TRAVELS., Blanch, Lesley.
4 Blanch, Lesley. FROM WILDER SHORES: THE TABLES OF MY TRAVELS.
London John Murray 1989 0719546923 / 9780719546921 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
179 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). 8 colour illustrations. "This is not a cookbook in the usual sense. Nor is it strictly a travel book though it does tell somehing of far lands (Afghanistan, Roumania, Iran, Turkey, France, etc.) and circumstances, of local dishes in local settings from Rothschild feasts to Turcoman tents and the tables of Hollywood. Lesley Blanch herself describes it as a sketchbook, a work of nostalgia which evokes dishes, places and people encountered while on the move through life. Here are Pushtu kebabs of lamb marinated in yoghurt and vinegar, shared with dusty but sumptuous Afghan horsemen, their eyes rimmed with kohl and their guns studded with turquoise; here bread and velvet - rough brown bread and thick clotted cream, offered at a Turkish wedding feast. Here also is kasha pilaff of buckwheat, egg and wild mushrooms, once cooked over a brushwood fire when partisans held up the Orient Express. And here are 'stchee' a la Stravinsky, Count Rumford's soup, cucumber sandwiches as Tolstoy ate them at Yasnaya Polyana, and 'tsuica' drunk to gypsy music in the garden restaurants of a Bucharest no longer to be found." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, very light rubbing.

6 Donegan, Rosemary. Introduction by Rick Salutin. SPADINA AVENUE
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." Very tiny bump at top corner of both boards, small slight bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.

EXTRA VIRGINITY: THE SUBLIME AND SCANDALOUS WORLD OF OLIVE OIL., Mueller, Tom.
12 Mueller, Tom. EXTRA VIRGINITY: THE SUBLIME AND SCANDALOUS WORLD OF OLIVE OIL.
New York W.W. Norton 2012 0393070212 / 9780393070217 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
238 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w and colour photographs. "For millenia, fresh olive oil has been one of life's necessities - not just as food but also as medicine, a beauty aid, and a vital element of religious rituals. Medical researchers today continue to confirm the remarkable, life-giving properties of true extra virgin olive oil. But this symbol of purity has become deeply corrupt. Most of what appears in supermarkets falls short of the high standards that define extra virgin oil, and some of it isn't even made from olives. Smelly, rancid, and downright fake olive oils are everywhere, from corner pizzerias to top restaurants. Tom Mueller takes us on a journey through the world of olive oil, meeting the hardworking artisan producers who struggle to conserve ancient, local traditions in the face of an increasingly globalized marketplace; fraudsters and multinationals who control the flows of fake products; chefs, researchers, military police, and oil sommeliers who celebrate the extraordinary oils that truly deserve the name 'extra virgin'. Superbly written, rich with fascinating forays into olive oil's uses throughout time, (this book) unveils the sacred history and profane present of a substance seen for millennia as the essence of health and civilization." Very minor rubbing on boards. Dust jacket has some minor edge wrinkling and minor rubbing.
