69 pp, + large b&w plate section (photographs, reproductions), 11 7/8" H. Dark blue cloth with gold lettering on spine, gold crest on front board. "(C)elebrates the quincentenary of the introduction of printing at Oxford with a pictorial history of its subsequent progress, illustrated by the books, documents, and pictures which are its tangible record. The story, although it properly begins with the arrival of Theodoric Rood and the first learned and educational books that he printed, stretches back to the early thirteenth century when scribes, illuminators, and binders of books were already found in Oxford; but it was not until the seventeenth century that, at the initiative of two great men, Archbishop Laud and Bishop Fell, the University Press in its present form was established. It is the dark, dominant figure of John Fell, Dean of Christ Church, and then Bishop of Oxford, who emerges as the real founder of the University Press, and the man who determined the type of books which still preoccupy the Press: learned and educational books, and the Bible." Tiny soiling mark on top of text block, small shallow bump to top of both boards. London Bison 1990 0861246209 / 9780861246205 Very Good Good+
192 pp, folio (14 1/2" H). "Created, ordered and led by Hitler, the state apparatus of Nazi Germany rigorously controlled all aspects of life in the Third Reich from cradle to grave. To maintain his iron grip on the German people through the ministries of his dictatorial government, Hitler surrounded himself with a small clique of fanatical, devoted acolytes. Men such as Heinrich Himmler, the much-feared chief of the Waffen-SS and organiser of the Holocaust, and Hermann Goering, the bombastic head of the Luftwaffe, wielded enormous power and held the fate of millions in their corrupt hands. (This book) tells the inside story of the Third Reich, looking at the personalities, roles and rivalries of Hitler's closest associates: Joseph Goebbels, the astute propaganda minister; Joachim von Ribbentrop, the Reich's chief diplomat; Rudolph Hess, Hitler's disgraced deputy; Albert Speer, the manager of the Reich's economy; Baldur von Schirach, the fanatic who moulded the thoughts of the youth of Germany; Alfred Rosenberg, the man who created the philosophical framework for the ideology of Nazisim; Martin Bormann, Hitler's enigmatic advisor; and Eva Braun, Hitler's mistress. Written by ( two) noted Dutch historians, (it) reveals the truth behind the fascade of the Third Reich and is an important contribution to the literature of the Nazi era. Illustrated with 300 photographs, many in colour, this book is a must for any student of the rise and fall of the Third Reich and its leaders." Dust jacket has light rubbing, several small edge tears with old tape repairs, light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few tiny dints on front panel, a few small faint line indentations on rear panel.

258 pp, 7 1/2" H. Bright blue cloth with gilt lettering/decoration on spine. "(O)ne of those rare books which capture the elusive qualities of childhood with integrity and naturalness. From the moment of their arrival in Plymouth, with a great mound of luggage, throughout their journeyings in search of a home and their final coming to anchor in 'The Very House', the doings of this unconventional family are described with detached gaiety. The characters are lovable and very much alive, not least among them Dan and Robbie, the Scottie and the Cairn. In the sombre house, with its massive trees and views to the mountains of Wales, Gillian and Diggory lead their eager and sensitive lives that now mingle with the life of the grown-ups and now voyage to the remote realms of childhood. They still retain their individuality that so soon disappears when children are regimented into school life. Readers who remember the poignant delights and swift sorrows of their own childhood will find deep pleasrue in this penetrating record." 12 Easton, Alan. Foreword by Rear-Admiral K.L. Dyer. 50 NORTH: AN ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND. (CANADA'S ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND.)
Toronto Ryerson Press 1963 First Edition. Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
287 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Archie Whelan / This describes a very different / environment in which you / & I worked together, but I / hope you'll like reading about it. / Your old friend / Alan Easton. / March 1963." B&w illustrations. "In this exciting book, Lieutenant-Commander Alan Easton of the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve tells of his experiences during the Second World War. The first ship he commanded was a corvette with faulty engines. His second corvette saw convoy action and battled both German U-boats and bad weather. Then Easton was given command of a destroyer which saw action in the English Channel on the day of the Normandy invasion. Easton gives a thrilling and detailed account of this successful naval engagement. But '50 North' is as much concerned with everyday life on board small warships as it is with the Atlantic battle as a whole. For this reason (it) is the first Canadian book of its kind. Easton is able to portray with vividness the seamen under him, their minor quarrels as well as the more important problems which occasionally develop between the crew and the commanding officers." Dust jacket has old tape repairs for large and small tears with creases, a few small edge chips, light browning, rubbing and soiling - mainly on rear panel, now protected in a mylar sleeve.

Indianapolis Bobbs-Merrill 1931 Very Good - Poor Inscribed By Author
347 pp, 8 1/8" H. Black cloth with red lettering and decorative borders on spine and front board, top edge stained red. Inscribed on front free endpaper: "For George Atkins - / old friend - / as a poor return for the / best apples I've met in / an age! / John Erskine / January, 1932 - ". "The car was moving fast but not too fast. You couldn't blame the driver. A tire exploded - . Before Ormer saw his friends again he stood before a Gate and heard the amazing dictum that scared him back to life: neither right nor wrong counts, but only their completion. The man alone is damned who fails to fulfil his intentions. But - cheating his partner. Seducing a girl. These were among the things that Ormer had begun. Now with his own salvation at stake he must return to complete them. In the twenty years that had passed, the partner had become the president of a powerful bank, the girl had become the wife of his faithful friend. And he knew he must return to face the Figure at the Gate. Most men and women carry about with them regrets vague or clearly articulated for the things they have not done. As we grow older we regret even the prudence which kept us from mistakes. Even from mistakes, we begin to feel, we might have learned more fully to live. This common experience is dramatized (here). Along with the regret for neglected opportunities to live goes usually a wish that we might return to past hours and complete what we left unfinished. Here is the story of a man who tried to make such a repetition of his life." Light toning to margins of pages; a few tiny foxing marks on preliminary pages, on rear pastesdown and on edges of text block; light edge wear/rubbing; wrinkling at top/bottom of spine; light corner bumps and two small bumps at bottom edge of front board; light browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block. London Arthur Barker 1965 Very Good- Fair
336 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H). B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "Written with crisp authority, in a tense, documentary style (this book) presents an unforgettable picture of the battles, the ships, and the fighting men whose blood reddened the seven seas through more than four flaming years of the Great War. (It) ranges over all the world's oceans, from the ice-filled waters of the Arctic to the remote coaling stations of the southern seas. It tells of the mighty line of battleships and cruisers whose collision at Jutland resulted in the war's vastest engagement. It describes the revolutionary entry of the dreaded submarine onto the naval scene with the exploits of Kapitanleutnant Otto Weddingen's U-9 against a trio of British cruisers in the North Sea. And it supplies a possible solution to one of the great maritime mysteries of all time - the baffling disappearance at sea of the collier Cyclops."
