CANADIAN IMPRESSIONISM., Duval, Paul.
5 Duval, Paul. CANADIAN IMPRESSIONISM.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1990 0771029650 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
166 pp, square 4to (11 3/4" H). "This beautiful volume, full of the light and colour that characterize most Impressionist art, is a thoroughly enjoyable guide to Canadian Impressionist painting from roughly 1885 to 1920. It brings together, for the first time in book form, the Canadian representatives of the world's most popular and accessible school of painting, offering a totally fresh look at a now-vanished society, and presenting a strong contrast to the isolated, unpopulated vision of the country usually portrayed by the Group of Seven - although members of that group are represented in their earlier, more intimate styles. 'Canadian Impressionism' conveys a vivid cross-section of the subject, including many paintings that have never before been reproduced. The work of neglected artists such as Helen McNicoll, Frank Armington, John S. Gordon, John Russell, and William Clapp is featured among the seventy full-colour plates, alongside the more familiar talents of J.W. Morrice, Paul Peel, Lawren Harris, Maurice Cullen, and A.Y. Jackson. (A) revelation and a delight, showing as it does a charming side of Canadian art that has not, until now, received the attention that it deserves." Light toning to edges of pages/text block, waviness to top/bottom edges of text block, several very small dents at bottom edge of boards, a few small shallow dents on fore-edge of boards, several very light stains on boards. Dust jacket has minor waviness at top/bottom edges, very light toning at top/bottom inside edges, sharp crease down rear hinge

TORONTO IN ART: 150 YEARS THROUGH ARTISTS' EYES., Firth, Edith G.
9 Firth, Edith G. TORONTO IN ART: 150 YEARS THROUGH ARTISTS' EYES.
Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside / City of Toronto 1983 0889027129 / 9780889027121 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
199 pp, 11 1/4" H. (B)rings together reproductions of over 170 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, in which 130 individual artists have interpreted aspects of the city of Toronto, from its incorporation in 1834 right up to the present day. Although organized in five chronological sections, it is not simply an illustrated history of the city. Rather it is a gallery of pictures accompanied by explanatory texts. Special emphasis has been given to new and unfamiliar material, and over 100 of the pictures in the book have never been reproduced before. Care has also been taken to reflect the ethnic, religious, social and cultural diversity of the city. The big names are here, among them such figures as Paul Kane, Sanford Fleming and Robert Harris from the Victorian period, several members of the Group of Seven, and more recent masters such as Jack Bush and David Milne. But here also are a host of less famous artists: some city residents, some passing visitors, some anonymous, some amateurs whose enthusiasm was greater than their talent. All, however, in their own ways, have made a vital contribution to our record of Toronto as it was and is." Minor scuff on bottom edge of front board, book slightly curved. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, very light edge wrinkling, three small edge tears archivally taped, slight waviness to back panel.
Price: 50.00 USD

DON'T FALL OFF THE ROCKING HORSE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY., Freiman, Lawrence.
10 Freiman, Lawrence. DON'T FALL OFF THE ROCKING HORSE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1978 0771031815 / 9780771031816 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good Signed by Author
199 pp, 9 1/4" H. Signed by author on title page (signature only). "Lawrence Freiman's reminiscences encompass the world of his grandfather - a Canadian adventurer who fought in the American Civil War - and focus on the span of his own life, including his childhood in Ottawa, his formative years, his involvement in education, the arts and social legislation, in Zionism, and in Freiman's, the family retailing business, which he expanded into a large and successful company. Here is a person who has made it as few have, and, in the course of making it, he has not only led a rich, varied and exciting life, but has also contributed much to Canadian society. His story is one of ups and downs, of risks, losses and victories, of the growth of a family and the progress of Zionism, of Canada and her capital, of the gradual shifts of time, of the rocking horse motion of life and the excitement of not falling off." A tiny light stain at bottom of title page and opposite page - also a very tiny stain at top edge of contents page; tiny tear and creases (archivally taped) at top edge of first illustration page; light to moderate edge wear on boards; light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine; three small corner bumps on boards; light lean to spine. 17 Holmes, John W. THE SHAPING OF PEACE: CANADA AND THE SEARCH FOR WORLD ORDER, 1943-1957. VOLUME 2.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1982 0802055419 / 9780802055415 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The establishment of the United Nations system at the conclusion of the Second World War was followed by a period of disillusion in the late 40s about the prospects of world order. With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 there came a regrouping of forces and revised calculations of what was possible. The first volume of 'The Shaping of Peace' described Canadian attitudes and policies towards international institutions as the Second World War ended. This volume is concerned with the developments in the decade after the war, with the changing Canadian concepts as they were shaped by events and challenges. Although principal attention is paid to the organs of the United Nations, other themes such as the establishment of NATO, the progress of the new Commonwealth, and the changing concepts of the North American relationship are analysed as essential elements in the Canadian search for equilibrium." Minor wrinkling at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, very light browning.
